3 Karen Refugee Committee Monthly Report April, Report relative to various support activities for refugees in camps. l.food for Refugee Camps. BBC( Burmese Border Consortium ) is supporting all the camps with Basic Food which include Rice, Yellow bean, Cooking Oil, Fish paste, Salt, Chilli, Cooking Fuel ( Charcoal). Material support include shelter/ building material, house hold / Kitchen use material which include Mosquito Nets, Blanket, Mats, Stoves, buckets, utensils etc. Emergency relief support, provided by all NGOs and sympathetic Donors cooperating in times of critical need. e.g. attacks and burnings or relocation of camps. 2. Medical / Health. NGOs responsible for Medical / Health care in Refugee Camps are supporting with In/out patients Treatment in camps, Maternal and child health, Primary Health care, Preventive Vaccination and Educational measures, Sanitation and Water supply, (a) A.M.I. ( Aide Medicale Internationale ) In Mae Ra Ma Luang, Um Pheim and Noh Poe. (b)a.r.c.( American Refugee Committee ) In Noh Poe and Um Pheim Ban Don Yang, (c) M.S.F.( Medicins Sans Frontieres ) In Mae La and Htam Hin Camp. (d)m.h.d.( Malteser - Germany) in Mae Kong Kha and Mae Ra Ma Luang Camps. 3. Education. Educational NGOs are supporting Refugee Camps with school buildings and furniture, Teaching material, books and stationery. They are also supporting with Training and Subsidies for teachers. Some NGOs provide support for Nursery Schools. (a) I.C.S (International Christelijk Stuenfonds )The Netherlands. Support in; Mae La Camp: Secondary schools ( 8 ), Primary school ( 13 ), Nurseries ( 18 ). Um Phiem Camp: Zone "A" Secondary schools ( 2 ), Primary schools ( 1 ), Nursery schools (3 ). (b).zoa - Refugee Care Netherlands. ABWaid, Consortium -Thailand. Cooperative support for schools in Noh Poe, Um Phiem, Mae La, Schools in ( 2 ) Karenni Refugee Camps, Mae Kong Kha and Mae Ra Ma Luang Camps. (c).coerr- ( Catholic Office for Emergency Relief and Refugee ) Support for schools in Ko Thet Lu, Tham Hin, Ban Dong Yang and Um Phiem (Zone-B) camps. Also implementing Environmental Education with support from UNHCR through EVI( Extremely Vulnerable Individual) Project. (d)tops ( Taipei Overseas Peace Service ) Supporting with Nursery schools in Noh Poe, Um Phiem and Mae La Camps. Works in cooperation with camps Women Groups, providing Teaching Methods and Subsidies for Teachers.

( Women's Education for Advancement and Empowerment) Support with imparting Education and knowledge to the Refugee women communities and also help support Nursery schools in Mae Ra Ma Luang and Mae Kong Kha camps. Other Support Activities. NCA ( Norwegian Church Aid ) supports KRC Committee Members and Staff / workers with monthly subsidies together with expenditures for work activities. *UNHCR- Provision of Protection for the Refugees, Proper Registration and for Ultimate safe Return of all Refugees. *H.I.-( Handicap International) Support provision of Prosthesis for Amputees in all Refugee camps. Have established Prosthesis Work shops in Mae Ra Ma Luang, Mae La and Noh Poe camps. H.I. is also concerned with rehabilitation works, teaching of Handicapped Children and also Education in land mine awareness for the communities. There is expectation by H.I. to expand into other disability fields. *PPAT-An NGO group which is helping with family planning activities in Mae La Refugee Camp. *SMRU- A Malaria research group doing research work on malaria in Border Refugee Camps. Also concerned with Prevention and suppression of Malaria. For the purpose of Refugee Camps Administrative work responsibilities, KRC has activated for elections of Administrative Committees in various Karen Refugee Camps. These Camp Committees will cooperate and coordinate with Responsible authorities, the KRC, and NGOs for proper maintenance and support for the Camps. New Administrative bodies, with tenure of two years have been set up in -; Mae Kong Kha Refugee Camp Mae Ra Ma Luang Refugee Camp. Um Phiem Refugee Camp. Noh Poe Refugee Camp. Ban Dong Yang Refugee Camp. Than Hin Refugee Camp. There is still need to set up a new Administrative Committee in Mae La, the largest Karen Refugee Camp. One worry for the KRC is Narcotics Drugs. From all evidences Drugs production in this Border Region is increasing alarmingly. So also is trade and distribution. We are also indebted to the NGOs for their Supports and Services. BBC- Support in Food and Shelter Material. Beginning this year BBC is to provide two more vehicles for KRC. MSF-Support in Medical and Health facilities. AMI- ARC- MHD- ZOA (ABWAid)- Support in Educational facilities. ICS (Asia)- Support in Educational facilities. TOPS- Support in Educational facilities. COERR-Rice and Educational Support. H.I - Support for Refugee Handicaps with Prosthesis and rehabilitation and also year-end sporting events for Handicaps. NCA( Norwegian Church Aid) has been providing KRC with administrative & Organizational Support. It has also made commitment to support with remuneration for KRC members and workers. UNHCR - For Registration Process Protection and Ultimate Safe Repatriation. BCEL - British commonwealth Ex-services League provide Grants to old WW(II) soldiers in refugee camp. This month ( COERR) is sending Quilts for refugees in camps.
