3 Dear All Readers, Karen Refugee Committee Newsletter and Activity Report August This month, August 12 is a special day, the 85 th birthday of present King s mother and it is also recognized and celebrated as Mother s Day and therefore, it is celebrated in all the refugees camps. It is also the day recognized by ethnic Karen as Martyr Day and many refugees joined the celebration in Karen State, Burma. In Arakan State, Burma, since the beginning of this month, there has been communal violence and till now, more than 400 people reported being killed and hundreds of thousand being displaced. The displacement is really sad news. The recent outbreak of H1N1 disease has created a great worry for the Refugee committee as the outbreak might spread into refugee camps. There have been reports to us that, more than hundred people admitted to hospital from two camps, Mae Ra Moe and Mae La Oo, however, the disease is not confirmed whether it is related to H1N1 or not. Therefore, there have been temporary closures of the camp for prevention purpose. On the other hand, the good news is that, on 10 th August, ADRA and KED representatives went to Naypyidaw and discussed about the Vocational Training program and the government has agreed to recognize the certificate of the livelihood program trainers in refugee camps. 4 Monthly Activities Report August /08/2017 KRC s Finance Advisor have meeting with UNHCR in relation to information sharing on KRC-CIT activities in camp. 02/08/2017 KRC s Finance Advisor have meeting with IOM in IOM office and discussed about IOM survey on suicide cases in Mae La camp /08/2017 KRC and CMSP team met with TBC and discussed about support for camp staffs at KRC office, Maesod. 3-4/08/2017 KRC s Finance Advisor have meeting with Mae La Oo camp committee and discussed on livelihood and preparedness cooperating with CBO/ CSO. 08/08/2017 KRC s Finance Advisor went to Mae La camp and celebrating Karen traditional wrist tying festival, giving encourage to the camp resident. 08/08/2017 KRC Education Coordinator met with Professor and around 20 students from Hosei University and shared them information about KRC and preparedness, at KRC office. 09/08/2017 KRC Committee along with Capacity Building Officer, CBOs and TBC provided Detention policy guideline to security staffs, camp committee, section committee and CBOs, MAT and CoC committee at Nupo camp. 10/08/2017 KRC s Finance Advisor have meeting with HI and discussed about further cooperation on livelihood program for Refugees return, especially for vulnerable people. 11/08/2017 KRC s Finance Advisor have meeting with CPPCR (Committee for Promotion and Protection and Child rights on Childbirth Registration) and discussed about birth certificate both for migrant and refugee children. 11/08/2017 KRC s Livelihood Coordinator met with Maela camp committee and Livelihood committee at Maela camp. 15/08/2017 KRC s Education Coordinator attended PREPS kick off meeting in Maesod. Other representatives attended are SCI, RTP, ADRA, WE and KWO /08/2017 KRC s Capacity Building Officer along with TBC provided Detention policy guideline to camp committee, CoC committee, CMT and security staffs /8/2017 KRC s Finance Advisor organized trip with KWO in Mae La Camp and explaining and sharing about KRC preparedness activities. 4

Other ethnic organizations were also joining. Issues on IDPs and refugee returns are also being discussed /08/2017 KRC s Health Coordinator attended Participatory Action Research workshop held at TBC office, Maesod /08/2017 KRC 's Capacity Building go to attend PAR workshop at Maesod. 31/08/2017 KRC s Livelihood Coordinator met with Thamhim s Livelihood committee concerning livelihood activities. 5

TBC coordinates with the Community Management and Preparedness Program to help with administration and management capacity in all seven camps. TBC provides KRC with administrative and organizational support and helps with staff remuneration. ADRA Adventist Development and Relief Agency. Starting January 2011, ADRA assumed responsibility for vocational training formerly implemented by ZOA in all seven camps. WEAVE Promotes women and children s education and self-reliance, focusing on household issues to help women achieve more power, rights, and opportunities in refugee communities. ARC American Refugee Committee. Supports medical and health facilities. M.I. Malteser International, formerly MHD Supports medical and health facilities. World Education Support for the Institute of Higher Education. COERR Catholic Office for Emergency Relief and Refugees. Food and educational support. EVI Involved with care and support for extremely vulnerable individuals. H.I. Handicap International. Supports handicapped refugees with prostheses and rehabilitation. It also organizes annual sporting events for the handicapped. UNHCR United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Supports registration process, protection, and ultimate safe repatriation. It is currently helping with resettlement issues. SMRU Shoklo Malaria Research Unit. Supports malaria control, prevention, and treatment. SVA Supports libraries in the camps. SAVE THE CHILDREN - Support teacher training and management capacity building. PPAT Planned Parenthood Association of Thailand. Supports family planning and preventive education in refugee camps. SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL Supports Burmese refugees in the camp to address sanitation issues. RIGHT TO PLAY Support Teacher subsidies, teacher training and capacity building.
