2 Update On Achievements Highlights 60 refugee girls attend ICT training Bootcamp: Girls from 6 schools in Kakuma refugee camp attended a 1-week Instant School Network Bootcamp on Information Technology and Communication (ICT) by UNHCR and Vodafone Foundation. The girls were introduced to latest ICT Innovations including web design and development, 3d modeling, computer robotics among others. Read more through the link: Refugees benefit from MyStART project: Refugees from Kakuma attended a oneweek training in visual art and film organized by My StART project and Windle Trust Kenya. UNHCR pilots imonitor : UNHCR has developed and piloted an innovative IT solution, imonitor, to expand the role of refugee communities in the monitoring of services by partners. The smart-phone compatible web-based tool allow refugees to report problems with GPS locations to UNHCR and service providers instantly. The system is set to be launched for WASH and Shelter sectors by end August Refugees from Kenya participate in IAAF World Championship: 5 refugees from Kenya competed in the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) World Athletics Championship that was held in London on August 4th under the Athlete Refugee Team. It is the first time in the 34-year history of the competition that refugees took part in. 3 Achievements PROTECTION Registration: A total of 111 new born were registered into the UNHCR database including 55 South Sudanese new born during the reporting period. RSD: UNHCR facilitated a training on preparation and posting of interview notices to Refugee Affairs Secretariat staff. Child Protection: 115 home visits in Kalobeyei settlement were made to 3,067 (1,268 female) in Kakuma camp children in child-headed households, foster families, those living with care givers and other vulnerable children to establish their wellbeing and monitor their progress. 474 home visits in Kakuma refugee camp were made to 4,425 (1,963 female) children in child headed households, foster families, those living with care givers and other vulnerable children to establish their wellbeing and monitor their progress. Community Based Protection: 3,059 refugees with specific needs received assistance during the reporting period. This include: psychosocial counselling, alternative healing, awareness and outreach campaigns. SGBV: Comprehensive medical and psychosocial support was offered to 21 SGBV survivors out of which 10 were from South Sudanese refugees. 10 of the reported cases were from Kalobeyei settlement while 11 were from Kakuma camp. Voluntary Repatriation (VolRep): 1,810 refugees have been assisted to return since the beginning of VolRep in more refugees are targeted for repatriation in HEALTH A total of 20,552 consultations for target population in primary health care services in Kakuma camp and 6,063 in Kalobeyei settlement. 4 new cases of Cholera were seen in Kakuma on 12 th August while Kalobeyei had the last case on 23 rd July. As of 15 August, 106 patients had been linelisted for cholera treatment. Identified Needs and Remaining Gaps 3

4 The rate of consultation per clinician per day remains high as compared to the acceptable UNHCR standard of <50 Consultations per Clinician per day with 107 and 126 consultations per clinician per day for Kakuma camp and Kalobeyei settlement respectively. FOOD SECURITY AND NUTRITION 1,164 (1,017 in Kakuma camp and 147 in Kalobeyei settlement) new admissions to Supplementary Feeding Programs for management of Moderate Acute Malnutrition(MAM) and 315(240 Kakuma and 75 Kalobeyei) to Outpatient therapeutic Care for management of Severe Acute Malnutrition(SAM). WATER AND SANITATION Construction of four new Elevated Steel tanks with a capacity of 100m3 in Cluster 2 and 3 of Kalobeyei settlement is ongoing. Once complete, these tanks will ensure continuous supply of water to the population in Kalobeyei settlement. A total of 213 out of the target 376 communal latrines have been constructed to replace filled-up latrines in Kalobeyei Settlement. Drilling and equipping of 2 additional boreholes (BH14 and BH15) is complete. Identified Needs and Remaining Gaps Resources need to be allocated for the construction of house hold latrines to replace the current communal latrines in Kalobeyei settlement. COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT AND SELF RELIANCE Agriculture: 200 households out of which 30 are from the host community have benefited from the harvesting of kg vegetables worth Ksh 54,022 from the 3 acre farm in Kakuma 2, Kakuma refugee camp. 450 Households are set to benefit from additional 6 acres of agricultural land that has been earmarked for expansion at the Choro farm in Kakuma 2. 5 458 households have benefited from kitchen gardens aimed at improving food security at household level in Kalobeyei settlement. Business Development: 162 (61 female) refugees were profiled at the reception center to inform the asset based approach to livelihoods. Financial literacy training and business management skills were provided to 288 (87 female) refugees out of which 108 (74 female) were from Kalobeyei settlement while 180 (87 female) were from Kakuma camp. 5 groups comprising of 98 refugees were trained on business skills during the reporting period. Identified Needs and Remaining Gaps Current 1-year project cycle (Kakuma) a hindrance to sustainable livelihoods programming. Inadequate access to credit facilities by refugees which limits the growth of existing businesses and opportunities for businesses. 5

6 Working in partnership UNHCR continues to work closely with the Government of Kenya, the Turkana County Government through the Office of the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), the Refugee Affairs Secretariat (RAS) and partners to ensure support to refugees and asylum seekers. Monthly Inter-Agency meetings chaired by UNHCR and RAS continue to be held including monthly meetings with refugee representatives in the camp. Financial Information Total recorded contributions for the Kenya operation amount to some US$ 63.2 million. UNHCR is grateful for the critical support provided by donors who have contributed to this operation as well as those who have contributed to UNHCR programmes with unearmarked and broadly earmarked funds. 6
