5 MEMBERSHIP REPORT Piedmont-Coastal Thank you for your support for our SPE Piedmont Coastal section. We have 137 total members (including students). We have 55 student members. Thanks to CCCC, NCSU and North Carolina A&T State University for their support. I encourage every member to sign up a new member for the 2018 year. Let s all work toward increasing our membership. If you have changed jobs or location, please send me a note. If you have any , employment, or phone number changes, please contact me as well. If you have someone you feel can benefit from joining SPE, give them an application or send me their name and I will submit it to SPE and have you as the referring member. Newsletter: The newsletter will be posted on the main SPE website this year. With everyone using smartphones, it is better to download the newsletter at your convenience. Moved: Lewis Wilson; Second: Matt Peterman to approve the Minutes as presented; Carried Treasurer s Report Presented by Lewis Wilson, Treasurer Financial Statement: Bank Balance ending May31, $19, Bank Balance ending June 30, $17, Bank Balance ending July 31, $17, Bank Balance ending August 31, $17, Notable Expenditures: $1,500 NCSU Scholarship, Newsletter, Councilor Travel The Financial Report was approved as reported. Moved: Matt Peterman; Second: Tim Earley; Carried Section Audit was completed in July and submitted to SPE Headquarters and the IRS. Membership Report - Tim Earley, Membership Chair Current Piedmont-Coastal total membership: 82 Professional and 55 Student members Education Report - Maury Balik, Education Chair Student Essay Contest: Based on the limited participation of students in the annual essay contest, alternative means of engaging students in plastics was discussed by the Board. The concept of incorporating 3D Printing in the high school plastics contest format was proposed. The Board members were charged with presenting proposed ideas for such a contest at the November Board Meeting. All Section Members are also encouraged to present their ideas. Please contact either Maury Balik or Dan Fuccella with your suggestions by the end of October. Newsletter Report Tim Earley, Newsletter Editor & Advertising Chair The Board congratulated Tim on the publication of his initial issue of the P-C Section newsletter Tim has streamlined the editing format of the Newsletter to make it more producer-friendly. Newsletter Advertisement Program: As of this meeting, $4,300 in ad revenue has been pledged of which $2,300 has been received. To reward monthly meeting presenters and to promote newsletter readership and sales, the Board discussed and agreed to offer presenters the opportunity to: include a promotional article in an issue of the newsletter include a business card ad in an issue of the newsletter place an ad in the newsletter at a 50% discount for one year
8 Counselor s Report Rodney Joslin for Clark Broome Rodney Joslin attended the SPE Counselor s face-to-face meeting in Detroit, MI. SPE President Dr. Read Al-Zu bi presented Highlights: internal operations and strategic priorities: 3-year operating plan This was the 75 th anniversary of the founding of SPE The new CEO, Pat Farrey reported on: Looking for candidates to fill five open positions; Staffing additions Improving profitability and financial controls IT infrastructure Membership and affiliate group support Business development President-Elect Vice President of Sections Vice President of Divisions Vice President of young Professionals Vice President of Education and Technology The Pinnacle Award is being replaced with the Communications Excellence Award whose purpose is: To recognize Sections, Divisions, and Special Interest Groups that carry out highly effective communications within their groups and, optionally, with other parts of the Society during the course of one SPE year. The Sections Committee Reported that three Projects have been initiated: Project 1: create awareness of our group Ensure effective communication of needs, issues, and resources Project lead: Adrian Merrington adrianmerrington@gmail.com Project 2: collect data about status quo of all sections Project lead: Tim Haake tim@goettfert.com Project 3: establish a best practices template for use by SPE sections Financial Performance Report July : Project lead: Scott Owens sowens@4spe.org For the month of July, SPE s Expenses exceeded Revenues by $123,494. For the seven (7) months ended July 31, : Excluding the Wiley payment, Revenues are $377,177 worse than budget. Overall expenses are better than budget by $169,130, and Operating Expenses remain on budget. Excluding the Wiley payment, YTD income of $48,483 is favorable to budget by $2,275. The Revenue shortfall is offset by $220K of investment income, which cannot be relied upon as guaranteed source of future income. Membership revenue, which had been reported as leveled off at about $77K/month has again fallen to under $70K/month for the second month in a row. Final ANTEC accounting will be in August, with an expected profit (Revenue minus Direct Expenses) of about $180K. New Business: Upcomong Joint Carolinas Section and P-C Section activity: Matt Piatek, Membership Director of the Carolinas Section attended the Board meeting to remind the P-C Section that they are invited to participate in a joint go-cart outing at 3pm on October 9, at Victory Lane Karting in Charlotte, NC.
