Patricia Northey Volusia County Council District 5 COUNTY COUNCIL UPDATE Our family gathers in the early afternoon around a table filled with the specialty dishes of the roasting, cooking and baking members of the family. Before we begin the feast we always go around the table and say what we are grateful for. Everyone participates and the comments become a kind of recap of the year the family has enjoyed. Many of the comments are poignant, some are routine and others are funny. I always look forward to hearing what the nieces, nephews and Grands are thankful for. And they never disappoint. Many times they express thanks for a special food that graces the table, or a toy that is a favorite. Sometimes they surprise me with the depth of their thoughts and sometimes they are just funny. One of the thankful comments that stand out the most for me is the one my grandnephew offered up some years back! He was thankful for Toilet Paper! He though he was quite the comic and we all laughed and said what a funny kid he 1

was and yes, that after much thought that was indeed a worthy thankful message. We are also thankful that our family can gather at the table filled with food. We are thankful that our extended family doesn t have to travel very far to enjoy the day together. We are thankful that my mother, now approaching 93 years of age, still has her health and always brings a special dessert (her Cheese Cake is one of my favorites) to finish the meal. And yes we are even thankful for toilet paper! What are you thankful for? Volunteers And I am also thankful for our wonderful County volunteers who help hold up our county in so many ways. From service on our many boards to working clean up u campaigns along our rivers and beaches, to volunteering in our libraries, to our citizens Observers s on the road and all the other areas that our citizen volunteers serve in, we are enrich with their diversity and skills. As your district 5 council member, I have the occasion to fill board and committee positions in many areas. Interested in Agriculture? Do you like to talk transportation? How about creating a cultural community or interested in protecting our children and families? I have openings for registered ered voters living in District 5 for any of these boards and committees. Download the application on the County web site and forward it to the Manager s office or call me at

Volusia County s farm and ranch families produce a bounty of agricultural products, managing a large portion of our county's land base and serving as caretakers of our natural resources and diverse ecosystems. The annual economic impact of Volusia County's agriculture and natural resources industries is $781 million, representing 3 percent of the county s economic activity. The county s 1,114 farms cover more than 229,000 acres and produce agricultural products including fruit, vegetables, honey, cattle, hay, sod, fish, timber and plants. Celebrating our nation s agricultural industry, the week before Thanksgiving is designated national Farm-City Week. In Volusia County, we conclude the week with a Farm Tour, an annual tradition since VO-LASALLE FARMS 3

The tour showcases various agricultural businesses, products and activities throughout the county. This is the one day a year local growers open their doors to the public for an up close look at how agricultural operations work. This is a self-guided driving tour so participants can pick and choose the operations they want to see, which are only available at specific times. I look forward to you joining us and continuing this educational, informative and fun tradition. Go to for the farms and ranches participating. David Griffis, Extension Service Director County-Council-Member-District-5/ I am regularly posting content on County Council issues to this page. Like the page to get the most recent Council News. 5 Volusia County District 5 Representative Pat Northey receives Espiritu Latino award Northey w/carlos Valderrama, President, Volusia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce The Volusia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce awarded Volusia County Council Representative Pat Northey with its Espiritu Latino award during its second annual Columbus Caravel Award Gala. 5

The Espiritu Latino award is given to an elected official or civil servant who has shown the most support for issues affecting Hispanics and their communities and worked with the chamber and its members on issues of priority. Northey said it s an honor to receive this award. It has been an honor to work with the Volusia Hispanic Chamber on issues impacting Volusia County, said Northey. From growing local businesses to lobbying for additional air service out of Daytona Beach International Airport, to serving on local boards and committees, the members of the Hispanic Chamber have been active and engaged in the business community, not just here in Volusia County, but in our central Florida region. The many contributions of our Hispanic citizens are a tremendous part of our state s history as well as our future. I look forward to continuing our efforts to promote business growth in Volusia County, and I commend the chamber for its progressive thinking and community involvement. Columbus Caravel Awards are given to members, businesses and individuals who have played a vital role in the Hispanic community. 6
