1 PROJECT Presidential Candidacy NAME Government force! is not reason; it is not eloquence; it is Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master. George Washington PROJECT You will become the Campaign Director for one of the Presidential Candidates for next year s election. Your project will be in FOUR PORTIONS, all culminating in March/April as a PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN NOMINATION SPEECH. The following are a brief description of each of the four portions, assignment points, due dates and expectations. The following rubrics are for the four portions of the project. [1] CANDIDATE BIOGRAPHY - You are expected to write a one page (500 words) essay of your candidate s life. As an essay you must have an introduction, body and conclusion. 25 points DUE: Thursday, February 11 [2] CAMPAIGN PLATFORM ESSAY - You will explain the candidate s positions, plans and political beliefs. You must include at least three main issue positions your candidate holds (such as, Domestic Financial Plans, Immigration Policies, Anti-Terrorism Plans, Taxation Philosophy, Stands on Social Issues [abortion, marriage, gun control, health care, to mention a few]). Put the issues into a form of a question - How does my candidate plan on handling this issue? 50 points DUE: Thursday, February 18 (copies for all your classmates are required)

2 [3] CAMPAIGN MARKETING - As your candidate s Campaign Director, you will be responsible for developing FOUR ELEMENTS for your candidate: Slogan - it must match your candidate and his/her positions; to be used for any situation [10 points] Logo - a visual element that relates to your candidate and their platform [10 points] Button - traditionally, campaign buttons have been given to campaign workers to wear and distribute [10 points] Advertising - either 5 posters OR a 30 second video [70 points] 100 points DUE: Thursday, March 10 [4] PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN NOMINATION SPEECH - All your elements now come together in one campaign speech and meet the press debate/press interview. You will be your candidate, present a speech, as if you had been the nominee, complete with your candidate s mannerisms, platform and persona - in other words, you need to BECOME the candidate - and present all your philosophies and platform. 3 RESEARCH - to help you in your research, it is recommended you contact the campaign headquarters of your candidate. You may also check out the following websites: check out the candidate s websites and social media sites here [1] CANDIDATE BIOGRAPHY [25 points] 70% (17.5 pts.) 20% (5 pts.) CATEGORIES F D C B A (Does your analysis provide sufficient details for the candidate and their background?) Research (Do you provide enough sources for information?) You have absolutely no idea about the candidate, nor the positions they hold on issues in this upcoming election. You provide 1-2 sources, OR you do not use MLA style. You only have a very surface understanding of the candidate and their platform. Your analysis of the life of the candidate is basic and short. You fulfill the requirements by providing the biography of the candidate, their beliefs and their platform. You indicate how they came to their conclusions and provide analysis of the candidate s life in regard to their political platform. You provide 3 sources. Your research shows you found as much as possible about the candidate and provide an analysis that truly explains their background and life experiences that has lead them to their current conclusions on issues. Your description and analysis makes the candidate completely understood. You show you know all major aspects of the candidate s beliefs, but have conducted enough research to know all about them. You provide 4+ sources. 10% (2.5 pts.) Spelling/ Grammar (Was your work accurate in its English?) You are energetic and knowledgeable of your candidate and use marketing material sufficiently. You provide at least 4 issues in your presentation and resemble the candidate exactly - you sound like them. You have made improvements on your marketing material and have a charismatic presence in convincing your audience - you are the right candidate. You provide 5 or more issues in your presentation and resemble the candidate amazingly - you could be their stunt double! Your use of improved marketing elements and your intensity convinces people to consider your candidate - you sold us on their capability to truly serve as President! REMEMBER, the purpose of the Nomination Speech is to convince your audience that your candidate truly is the best choice! You may have to take the opposite opinions to your own and debate the candidate s beliefs (even if you do not agree). You will also be required to conduct a Press Interview and answer questions from the journalists (students) in the room. Be prepared to know your candidate well - as if you were that person!
