1 Brazos Area Recreational Flyers Bragging and Gossip Chapter 983 Newsletter March 2009 PO Box 5191 Granbury, TX Visit us at: Chapter 983 meets every second Saturday at 10:00 am in The Houseman Hangar. N.E. corner of the runway In This Issue Meeting Notes...1 New Freq On-Line dues... 3 Website....4 Projects.5 Calendar. 6 Classifieds..6 Sponsor Ads...7 Meeting Notes Marcos Costillia, President of MCA Enterprises, presented our February program. He told of the behind the scenes trials and tribulations of working in war torn Iraq, and of the brave Iraqi's who risk their lives everyday to come to work with the hopes of rebuilding their country to compete in the modern day international market. Having just returned from serving two 15 month tours in Baghdad, Iraq, as the Senior Aviation Adviser for the first tour and DOT Attaché during his second tour, he has firsthand knowledge and experience in nation building and infrastructure rebuilding of the aviation sector in Iraq. He lived and worked in the International Zone (Green Zone) while carrying out the DOT mission in Iraq. He provided technical assistance and capacity building to the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority, the Ministry of Transportation, and the Office of the Prime Minister. He also supported US business interests engaged in aviation sector activities in Iraq. He sponsored US government contracts for the restructuring of Iraqi Airways, their national flag carrier and the rebuilding of the civil airports in Iraq to meet international standards. He worked closely with the 2 US Embassy Ambassadors and the US military coalition forces to harmonize the civil and military missions in Iraq. He traveled extensively within Iraq to provide direct support to the Iraqi's in airport development and operations, airport security, and the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority in support of promoting civil passenger and cargo operations in Iraq. Other Business: Debbie Dewey gave the treasurer s report and noted that we have only one Air Academy applicant. Our chapter is sponsoring the pancake breakfast at Granbury Airport March 28. John McComas went over the proposed changes to the by-laws. A suggestion was made to exclude the past officer restriction. Revised changes were voted on and passed by a majority of those present. Deer on the runway problem at Pecan was discussed with methods being considered. No action by the chapter. John described the upcoming programs for 2009:
2 2 March 14 Alternative Power for Light Aircraft April 4 Poker Run with hangar party at Berry s May 9 Chapter Spring Fly-In June 13 Matlock Ranch Fly-In with R/C Models July 11 Brian Birdwell & Hangar Party August 8 DARs Paul Beech and Mel Asberry September 12 P51 Pilot October 10 Chapter Fall Fly-In November 14 Lo Presti December 4 Christmas Party Bubba Bain (Pecan resident) offered tire inflation nitrogen service and described the process and reasons. (Everyone gets one free advertisement!) Bob Kaman is a new member and Pecan resident since July He is a director for the Fort Worth fly-in. He is coordinating the GA involvement for the October 24-25, 2009 event and has offered EAA983 to be the sponsor of the activity. He requested an expression of interest. Several topics were discussed. The Falcon Flight is being considered as an airshow event during the fly-in. Dick Keyt reported that the scales have been calibrated and were reasonably accurate anyway. Dave Christman discussed his flying career as part of the chapter member information program. Dave started flying in 1976 in Tulsa, OK. He provided commercial pilot services for the oil business. In 1986, he considered flying for Walmart, but was hired by American Airlines. He is a check airman and B737 Captain for American Airlines. He has built and is flying an RV-8. Bob Fisher was recognized as a visitor. Dick Keyt won the drawing prizes. (Thanks to Don Saint for taking notes.) Pecan Plantation (0TX1) Now has a new CTAF frequency! Effective: Sunday, 0800 hrs., March 1, 2009 New frequency:
3 PAY YOUR DUES ON-LINE! 3 Yes, we have finally joined the 21st century. Now there is one less reason to forget to pay your dues. is the chapter website address. On the left side, or nav bar, click on Chapter Info/Dues. This will take you to the page where you can pay your dues with either a PayPal account or any regular credit card. Clicking Donate (I ll try to find a more appropriate button in the future) will send you to a secure site at which you will be able to send money. If your information is the same, you are done! You will be credited with having paid, and will not be dropped from the roll for non-payment. For new members, after you pay, please print out the application and mail it to the address noted, or bring it to a meeting. You may also just the same information to the secretary or webguy. It is still perfectly acceptable to bring cash or checks to a meeting, or mail a check, etc. This just provides another measure of convenience to our chapter members. MORE WEBSITE TUTORIAL Years go by, projects are completed, planes get flown. Websites slowly evolve, too, and this might be a good time to take a quick tour of what s available. If you are new to the chapter, maybe you just have never taken the time to explore. Here goes: The banner at the top is pretty self-explanatory. Quick access to most-visited areas. Those of you with classified ads need to notify me when the item is sold. Some of these have been listed a LOOONG time. Often overlooked, the advertiser drop-down lists those who sponsor our hard-copy newsletter. Please take a look and patronize them (and thank them) where appropriate. (continued)
4 4 Take a look at the home or Welcome page. Clicking on the sectional thumbnail will take you to a website with much more chart information. (TIP: You can open any link in a new window by holding down the shift key as you click.) Click on the EAA logo to go to the National EAA website. The navigation bar at the left is the key to digging deeper. Have you tried out the Member Forum? It is about a year old now, and sees sporadic activity. You can post information of many kinds there. Check it out once in a while. Anything older than 12 months will be deleted. Newsletter archives contain virtually every newsletter since 2000! If you want to research chapter activities, or just look at members when they (and their kids!) were younger, this is the place. Photo archives document past parties and fly-ins. With the advent of web photo sites like Picasa, Shutterfly, etc, this has received less emphasis in the recent years. The Member Roster is kept up to date as much as is humanly possible. A handy function that is not entirely obvious is the lookup. If you place your mouse over one of the member names, the address will show up usually at the bottom of your browser. Just click on the name, and your program will probably open a new pre-addressed to that individual! Please feel free to send updates and corrections to me by clicking on Webmaster as seen above. Member s Aircraft is a place where you can show off your aircraft with your photos and/or a link to your own web site or photo album. Just send me your info and photo, and you will be in business. Useful Links is a place to gain quick access to many aviation-related websites. Send me your favorite, and I will add it. In the same light, if you find a bad link, please report it to me. Have you checked the Tool Loan list? There are a surprising number of expensive tools just waiting to be borrowed for those infrequent jobs that come up. I suspect there are some tools missing from this list that should be added. Please let me know and I will add them. Need a Flight Advisor or Tech Counselor? Just click Officers and Contacts. There is also a list at the end of every newsletter. Lots of time goes into trying to keep our website current, so take advantage of what it offers, dig in and try new areas. Credit goes to Rick Chapman for setting up this site originally. As I often say, I am just trying not to screw it up too bad! Bill Eslick, aka Webguy
