1 1 The Claysburg-Kimmel School District Board of School Directors met in regular session on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, with Jeff Dugan, President, presiding. The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm. The following members responded to roll call: Mr. Craig Burket, Mr. John Burket, Mr. Jonathan Burkett, Dr. Mona Eckley, Mr. Jeremy Knott, Mrs. Terri Lingenfelter, Mr. Joe Musselman, and Mr. Jeff Dugan. Mr. Dugan, on behalf of the School Board, recognized the Boys Basketball team for their first winning season since He presented certificates to each team member. He noted that all of the seniors on the team are honor students. Motion by Lingenfelter, seconded by C. Burket, to go into executive session at 7:08 pm for the purpose of discussing personnel items. Motion by Lingenfelter, seconded by C. Burket, to come out of executive session at 7:25 pm. Motion by Lingenfelter, seconded by Knott, to approve the minutes for the February 13, and March 5, 2014 meetings. Motion by Burkett, seconded by C. Burket, to approve the additional bills for February and regular bills for March. Motion by Lingenfelter, seconded by J. Burket, to approve the cafeteria bills for March. Motion unanimously passed by roll call vote. Motion by J. Burket, seconded by Lingenfelter, to approve the treasurer s report for February. Mr. Rich Gergely addressed the board. He congratulated the Boys Basketball team for a memorable season. He also addressed the board regarding the boys basketball boosters. Mr. Shawn Musselman, Ms. Marriner, Mr. Eckley, and Mr. Allison also addressed the issue. Mr. Mike Belvia, from ProDisposal introduced himself to the Board.

2 2 Motion by J. Burket, seconded by C. Burket, to approve the revised cafeteria prices for the school year. Mrs. Smithmyer reported that the Federal School Lunch Equity Pricing regulations require school districts to gradually increase meal prices to match government reimbursement levels. Motion by Knott, seconded by Burkett, to approve the renewal of the contract with Nutrition, Inc. for Food Service Management Services. Motion by J. Burket, seconded by Eckley, to award the contract for trash removal services to Burgmeier s Hauling, Inc. ($9,420). Motion by Lingenfelter, seconded by Knott, to award the contract for copier services to Raystown Office Equipment ($19,469.16). Motion by J. Burket, seconded by Knott, to award the contract for Athletic Training Services to ProCare (1,200 hours/year, $15,000.00). Mr. Musselman noted that the District has been very satisfied with the services of our trainer, Josh Stratton. Motion unanimously passed by roll call vote. Motion by Burkett, seconded by Knott, to table the decision regarding the Transportation Services proposals until the April meeting, in order to provide the opportunity to better evaluate the bids. Motion by J. Burket, seconded by Burkett, to approve the revised school calendar for the school year. Motion by Lingenfelter, seconded by Burkett, to accept the resignation of Beth Beers from her position as Food Service Director, effective March 26, Ms. Boyd reported that Nutrition will provide a Food Service Director to fill in for Beth for the remainder of the school year. Motion by J. Burket, seconded by Lingenfelter, to accept the resignation of Kayla Mcafee from her position as Personal Care Aide. Motion by Burkett, seconded by Lingenfelter, to approve the transfer of Cheryl Woomer to the 4½ hour position in the cafeteria. Motion by Knott, seconded by J. Burket, to approve the addition of Kristi Long to the list of instructional substitutes. Motion by Knott, seconded by Lingenfelter, to approve the list of Spring Coaching staff. Motion unanimously passed by roll call vote. Motion by Knott, seconded by Eckley, to accept the resignation of John Caracciolo from his position as Yearbook Advisor, effective at the end of the school year. Mr. Caracciolo has

3 3 offered to work with his replacement to provide continuity. Motion unanimously passed by roll call vote. Motion by Burkett, seconded by Knott, to accept the resignation of Josh Klausman from his position as Head Varsity Boys Basketball coach. Motion passed by majority vote, with Dr. Eckley, Mr. Knott, and Mr. Musselman voting against the motion. Motion by Knott, seconded by Musselman, to change the night of the board meetings from Wednesday to Tuesday, effective with the meetings beginning in August, Motion failed by majority vote, with Mr. J. Burket, Mr. Burkett, Mrs. Lingenfelter, and Mr. Dugan voting against the motion. Mr. C. Burket abstained. Mr. C. Burket reported that SB 46 is stalled in the Senate; this bill bans passing the trash. He asked that the Administration send a letter in support of SB 46 or of HB Motion by C. Burket, seconded by Knott, to authorize the administration to send a letter, on behalf of the school board, to our local representatives in support of SB 46 and HB Mr. C. Burket also reported that PSBA is currently seeking district s input on HB 1013 which would modify the requirement for home school reporting. Mr. Burkett said he would like to hear the pros/cons. Mr. J. Burket said he would like to have a discussion with some home schooling families regarding the reasons for their choice. Mr. O Dellick reported one of our GACTC students, Katelynn Ellis, competed in the State DECA competition recently; she prepared and presented a 30 page paper on Retail Marketing/Entrepreneurship which won 2 nd place. She will now advance to DECA International. Motion by Knott, seconded by Lingenfelter, to sponsor Katelynn Ellis as represents CKSD/GACTC at the DECA International Competition in May. The board asked that Katelynn be invited to a future meeting to be recognized. Mr. O Dellick also reported that 10 th grade students participated in a Survival 101 Assembly (Drivers Education), presented by Trooper McGarvey. 21 students participated in Junior High County Chorus on February 24 th and 25 th. Mid-terms were sent home on March 5 th. Cory White will represent CKSD at PMEA Regional Band on March 13 th and 14 th. 10 students were inducted into the National Honor Society on March 11 th. NHS students are offering a Spring Tutoring Project. PSSA testing for 7 th and 8 th grade students in Reading and Math will be given on March 25 th, 26 th, and 27 th. 8 th grade students will be tested for PSSA Writing on April 1 st and 2 nd. The 8 th grade Career Fair will be on March 14 th. Bayli Crawford, an 8 th grade student, won 3 rd place in the PA State Game Commission Youth Wildlife Art contest. Bayli won $100 for her Short-Eared Owl. 21 student will represent CKSD at the FBLA State Competition in Hershey on April 7 th, 8 th, and 9 th. 14 FBLA students completed the future level (50 hours donated to the community) for the FBKA Business Achievement Awards; Rachel Walter is one level shy of completing all levels and qualifying for nationals. Mr. O Dellick congratulated our winter sports teams: Wrestling (10-12 record), Boys Basketball (12-11 record), and Girls Basketball (20-5

4 4 record). The Girls Basketball team will advance to the second round of the PIAA State Playoffs and will face Kennedy Catholic at Hempfield High School on March 13 th. 9 th grade student, Elizabeth Weiland, was the Altoona Mirror Athlete of the Week. Spring sports are in full swing! Mrs. Criswell reported that Dr. Seuss Day was a huge success once again and offered special thanks to each of our guest readers: Jeff Dugan, Mike O Dellick, Terri Lingenfelter, Joe Musselman, Jeremy Knott, Cathy Barnes and Mona Eckley. She also thanked Mrs. Russell for spearheading the event. Midterms were sent home on March 5 th ; the marking period ends on April 7 th. Kindergarten registration will be held on March The elementary school is currently collecting school wide for the American Heart Association. Students participated in an assembly where a local Double Dutch Jump rope team demonstrated a fancy way to move the ropes and get fit at the same time. PSSA tests for grades 3-6 will be given the week of March 31-April 4 for reading and math. The PSSA writing assessment will be April 7-9 for 5 th grade students. The PSSA science assessment will be April for 4 th grade students. The BOGO Book Fair will be held April Elementary Band fest is April 11 th ; participating students: Matthew Brown, Maggie Knisely, Shadey Claycomb, Tanisha Bradford, Ben Weiland. Mrs. Criswell thanked Matt Stombaugh for his hard work and dedication in preparing the students for this event! Ms. Boyd reported that the District received the final allocation numbers for our Federal Programs grants for the school year; the allocations represent a reduction of over $4,000 from the original grant projections. The allocations for will be released later this year. Ms. Boyd reported on the BASICs committee, a collaboration of school administrators and local business representatives. BASICs recently collaborated on a DVD Check our Careers with the Curve, geared toward 8 th and 9 th grade students. BASICs and the Rotary Club of Blair County will sponsor a career fair for sophomores on April 30 th. BASICs supports a job shadow program in November. They are currently working with the GACTC on the Next Generation program; this is a summer work program that matches junior and seniors with local businesses. Ms. Boyd also reported on the work of the Blair County Park/Recreation Committee, they work with community parks throughout Blair County and provide grants to upgrade local parks. Ms. Boyd reported that CKSD received a $25,000 Safe Schools grant; this will provide funds to consult with Standing Stone to establish a work calendar to assess risks at both of our schools. Administration is working on a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program grant to provide health, educational snacks to students at our elementary school next year. Administration is also working of a Video Insight grant to update our surveillance cameras. Administration is also working on a PA Team Nutrition grant to facilitate a Grab-n-Go breakfast program to encourage our students to eat a nutritious breakfast. Ms. Boyd also explained that we are taking advantage of a 60 day free trial to pilot Virtual Computing, which will place 30 computers in one of our labs. CKSD will host the Blended Schools Jubilee for schools in the Central Region on April 10 th.

5 5 Ms. Boyd attested that the Comprehensive Plan was displayed on the District s website for 30 days following the public discussion at the February meeting.
