INTRODUCTION The records of the Missouri Chapter of the Ozark Section of the Society of American Foresters contain meeting material, minutes, newsletters, reports, correspondence, photographs and miscellaneous material. DONOR INFORMATION The records were donated to the University of Missouri by the Missouri Society of American Foresters through Timothy French on 18 February 1985 (Accession No. 4687). An addition was made 4 June 1987, by the Missouri Society of American Foresters through Allen McGinnes (Accession No. 4780), and subsequent additions were made by McGinnes on 11 August 1988 (Accession No. 4866), and 19 June 1991, (Accession No. 5049). ORGANIZATIONAL SKETCH Between the years 1959 and 1962, there was periodic discussion about the desirability of organizing a Missouri Chapter of the Ozark Section of the Society of American Foresters. Several chapters and groups had been organized in Arkansas and Oklahoma and they seemed to be productive. During his sabbatical leave in , Dr. Richard C. Smith, professor of Forestry at the University of Missouri, was a member of the Portland, Oregon Chapter. Dr. Smith found that this was an extremely active group and was impressed by the activities and accomplishments. He was determined to see if a chapter could be organized in Missouri. When Dr. Smith returned to Columbia in July of 1963, he discussed the possibility of organizing a chapter with several people by letter. With a sample copy of by-laws the chapter was formally organized on October 10, 1963, at a breakfast meeting in the Hawthorn Room of the Student Union, Columbia, Missouri, in conjunction with a short course on soils. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The records have been arranged into the following thirteen series, and in chronological order within each series: History Chapter Correspondence Photographs Publications Newsletter Meeting

2 C4185 Missouri Society of American Foresters, Records, c Page 2 Membership National Legislative Program Reports Miscellaneous The History series contains a brief history of the Missouri Chapter of the Ozark Section of the Society of American Foresters, including the year of creation and principal individuals who were responsible for starting it. Also included are meeting minutes from the early years, an Ozark folklore history of the Karkhagne, and a bylaws section, The Chapter series consists of material pertaining to membership, public relations issues such as clearcutting of forests, chapter publicity, legislative affairs, chapter actions, constitution and bylaws, etc The Correspondence series contains material concerning committee activities, National Society news, reorganization, and membership The Photographs series consists of historical logging photographs, along with photos of the Missouri Society of American Foresters, meetings and awards banquets, along with field trips and tours. There are also photographs of meetings with legislators, Senator William Cason, and Governor Christopher Kit Bond, Circa 1900s to The Publications series contains the following: Forest Resources of Missouri,1948; The Forest Service and the Civilian Conservation Corps, , published in 1986; Highlights of Texas Forestry, , published in 1984; History of the University of Missouri, Columbia, with special focus on the development of the Department of Forestry, published in 1970; History of Ozark Section, , published in 1976; History of the Florida Society of American Foresters, , copyright, 1983; Environs, 1980, 1981; Conservation Currents, 1987; Society of American Foresters (SAF) Constitution and By-Laws, 1985; Society of American Foresters (SAF) Forest Policies and Positions, 1983, 1985; Society of American Foresters (SAF) Manual, The Newsletter series contains newsletters of the Society of American Foresters with updates and discussion of current issues, topics and practices. Among the newsletters included are The Ozark Reporter, Missouri Forestry Newsletter, Missouri Society of American Foresters, and SAF Notes From: etc Please note that some of these newsletters may also be found in other portions of the collection. The Meeting series contains Missouri chapter meeting minutes, and meeting material from the annual meetings of the National Society of American Foresters in Washington, D.C., The Membership series consists of chapter directories listing names of members, membership status, and various internal procedures The National series contains information on Washington office forest history projects, various field activities; national forest policies, national accreditation, meetings, committee work, the national constitution, and information on national forest history

3 C4185 Missouri Society of American Foresters, Records, c Page 3 The Legislative series consists of various legislative conferences and reports, covering such topics as the establishment of a state scenic rivers preservation system; the limitation of the horsepower of motor boats used on those rivers named in the scenic rivers proposal; strip mine reclamation, and plans to revise and strengthen the water pollution law. Other topics include air pollution, solid waste disposal, feed lot pollution, pesticides, littering, a marine fuel tax, sanitary facilities at private campgrounds, etc. Also included is correspondence suggesting proposals for other conservation related programs The Program series contains correspondence, notes, brochures and registration forms relating to the development of various business and recreational programs held throughout the year. 1983, The Reports series include legislative reports concerning forest lands and land use policy The Miscellaneous series includes a drawing of Dr. Hermann Von Schrenk, an earlier forester and forest scientist, c.1900s; a civil defense plan for the protection of state and private forest lands in Missouri, and a flyer printed by the Federal Civil Defense Administration regarding the CONELRAD emergency broadcasting system, 1951 and FOLDER LIST History series f. 1 History of Missouri Chapter, Ozark Section, Society of American Foresters, , n.d.
