1 C Meador, Lewis E. ( ), Constitutional Convention Papers, linear feet This collection is available at The State Historical Society of Missouri. If you would like more information, please contact us at INTRODUCTION Personal files of a professor of economics at Drury College who was a delegateat-large to the convention. Meador served on the committees of education, taxation, schedule, and executive. Composed primarily of correspondence, the collection also contains drafts of articles, minutes of committees, and proposals considered by the convention. DONOR INFORMATION The papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Leeson Cook Meador on 14 October 1974 (Accession No. 3952). Additions were made by Doris Crump Bradshaw on 15 September 1976 (Accession No. 4012) and A.G. Taubert on 21 November 1977 (Accession No. 4124). Additional material was transferred from Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Rolla on 5 November 1985 (Accession No. 4681). BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Lewis Elbern Meador was born on 9 September 1881 and grew up on a farm near Cassville, Missouri, received his bachelor's degree at Warrensburg State Teachers College, and did graduate work at the University of Chicago and Columbia University in New York. Meador served as professor of economics and political science at Drury College, Springfield, Missouri, In addition to serving as a delegate-at-large at the Missouri Constitutional Convention of , Meador chaired the committee on Home Rule for Springfield and was active in the development of the Wilson's Creek Battlefield Foundation. Meador was both a trustee and first vice president of the State Historical Society of Missouri at the time of his death on 14 November 1975 in Springfield. As a delegate, Meador, while a staunch Republican, sought political reforms cabinet system of government, salaries for all public officials, and the nonpartisan court plan which were opposed by some party leaders, notably the St. Louis Republican Committee. At the same time, he was a traditional conservative on certain issues such as opposition to organized labor. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE While most of the material pertains to Meador's constitutional interests merit system, education, free public libraries, reorganized executive department, and taxation the collection does have correspondence relating to most of the major articles of the proposed constitution. Some personal correspondence is also included, but neither the convention material nor the private papers are complete. The correspondence is indicative of those issues which created the most public furor throughout the state; as a delegate-at-large Meador represented the entire state. The Conservation Commission, abolition of the fee system for public officials, free public libraries, and the short ballot
2 C895 Meador, Lewis E. ( ), Constitutional Convention Papers, Page 2 were some of the topics which attracted a great deal of attention. Due to the incomplete nature of official convention materials and minutes, the collection is less informative about the daily business and activities of the convention. While retaining the original arrangement where possible, this collection is organized alphabetically. Miscellaneous files contain general correspondence; subject files correspond roughly to the various standing committees of the convention with the exception of topics of special interest to Meador, such as libraries, which have individual subject folders. Some overlap occurs with regard to issues which were the concern of more than one committee; similarly, certain articles of the constitution represent the work of multiple committees.
