Historical Note The Insurance Company Education Directors Society (ICEDS) was informally organized in 1947 for the purpose of training its members through programs, networking, and services and to benefit the insurance industry as a whole by meeting annually to discuss ideas related to insurance education. The idea of creating a society was originally conceived during discussions between Warner C. Danforth, Superintendent of the Education Department of the Employers Group, and Frank D. Eubank, Director of the Royal-Liverpool Group. The earliest correspondence contained in the collection about developing an insurance education society dates back to March 4, A small group of about 15 to 20 persons attended ICEDS s first meeting, held in a classroom at the Insurance Society of New York on September 12, Discussions centered on broad, conceptual topics relating to the future aims and goals of the society. ICEDS held its first, formal conference on June 24, 1948 in New York City with over 30 conferees attending to discuss issues such as subjects of interest to agents, appropriate educational background needed to become a training classroom teacher, and types of classes supervisors should be required to complete. The first president of ICEDS was H. Paul Abbott, President of the Insurance Company of North America, who held this position at ICEDS from The society was composed of a crosssection of the insurance business, including stock, mutual, and reciprocal insurance company education and training directors, personnel directors, and officers responsible for the training function in insurance. The society was also open to college, university, or institute teachers of insurance, employees of companies that were members of ICEDS, and others interested in insurance education. The society s activities included annual meetings, conferences, and trainings. 3
4 The society produced two publications. Education Exchange was a bi-monthly newsletter mailed to members only, consisting of information on training programs, teaching methods, and educational trends in the insurance industry. Insurance Teaching was a collection of articles formerly printed in Education Exchange. The articles in the Teaching section of Education Exchange that were selectively chosen as the best for teaching and training are contained in Insurance Teaching. ICEDS changed its name in 1986 to the Society of Insurance Trainers and Educators (SITE). As of February 2016, SITE continues to be an active organization, and is committed to the values of providing opportunities for the training and educational development of its members, supporting the growth of the insurance business as a whole through collaboration within the industry, and advancing the professional integrity of its members. More information can be found on their website, Scope and Content These records document the activities of the Insurance Company Education Directors Society / Society of Insurance Trainers and Educators from 1947 through The bulk of the records belong to the society when it operated under its original name. The records include, but are not limited to, correspondence between the initial founders of the organization, proceedings of annual meetings, minutes, publications, membership directories, lists and rosters, procedures manuals, event files, and photographs. The records also include articles, correspondence, brochures, letterheads and promotional materials. Subject Terms Insurance Company Education Directors Society Archives Society of Insurance Trainers and Educators Archives Insurance Study and Teaching Occupational training Insurance companies Employees Training of. Organization The records of ICEDS/SITE are arranged into eight series: Series 1 General Information Series 2 Proceedings of the Annual Meetings/Conferences Series 3 Minutes Loose Leaf Minutes Minute Book Series 4 Publications Education Exchange Insurance Teachings Series 5 Membership Directories, Lists & Rosters Series 6 Events Series 7 Procedures Manual Series 8 Photographs 4
5 Series Description Series 1, General Information, includes accession, early correspondence between members of the organization, the filing system used to organize documents contained in Education Exchange, constitution and by-laws, employee position descriptions, procedures, promotional materials, magazine articles, advertisements, letterheads, and training skills surveys. Series 2, Proceedings of Annual Meetings/Conferences, contains proceedings of annual meetings filed by year, bound in either book form or folders with metal fasteners, and proceedings of annual meetings, filed by section in loose pages intended for filing in a three-ring binder. The 1954 and 1955 records are consecutively number paginated; all other records follow the filing system proscribed by ICEDS. Under this system, on the right-hand side of each page, a number is expressed according to the following format: Section-Topic-Page Number. Consider the number 1-GW-1. The 1 denotes the section Miscellaneous, the GW denotes the symbol which has been assigned to the topic George Whitford and the 1 denotes the page number. The left-hand side of each page is paginated following the format of Education Exchange (Ed. Ex.), the Proceedings of Annual Meetings (PAM) or the Proceedings of Annual Conferences (PAC). In 1966, the proceedings were titled, Proceedings of Annual Conferences. Each issue of Ed. Ex., PAM, and PAC were intended to be filed together. As such, the pages of PAM and PAC are assigned to sections, and numbered within sections, so that members could remove them and file them among similarly numbered pages from past issues of Education Exchange. The AM pages were intended to be filed in the back of a three-ring binder. Additionally, note that in series 3, Education Exchange, the page numbering system was revised to a numeral format in Each PAM issue contains information such as the minutes of the proceeding, essays presented at the proceeding, a group photograph, roster, program, among other information. The collection contains the PAMs for the years and includes multiple copies of the PAMs for some years. This series also contains the proceedings of the annual conference of 1966, which presents similar information as that contained in the PAMs. Series 3, Minutes, contains the minutes of ICEDS executive board and executive committee meetings from This series is comprised of loose leaf minutes and a minute book. The minute book ( ) does not cover as large of a span of years as the loose leaf minutes ( ), but contains additional information not included in the loose leaf minutes, such as a copy of the ICEDS constitution and by-laws. Series 4, Publications, includes Education Exchange, a bi-monthly newsletter published from , and Insurance Teaching, a collection of articles published from , that were formerly printed in Education Exchange. Series 5, Membership Directories, Lists, & Rosters, contains information such as the name, position, address, and phone number of individual members of the society from The directories, lists, and rosters were intended to facilitate the exchange of information among members of the society. 5
6 Series 6, Events, covers the entire proceedings of the first through fifth (and later) annual conferences of insurance company educational directors. The conferences were held in Absecon, N.J., and New York, N.Y. The series also contains flyers, registration forms, pamphlets, and other materials related to ICEDS events. Series 7, Procedures Manual, contains records of the ICEDS Procedural Manual ranging from the initial draft proposal to its final form. The manual was drafted for the purpose of documenting procedures related to the selection of sites for annual conferences, establishing guidelines for annual meetings, delineating the position requirements for member officers, providing members with form letters, and for the documentation of all other matters necessary to the successful functioning of the organization. Series 8, Photographs, contains images of individual ICEDS members, group photos, and photos of members at conferences, meetings, and events.
