2 Happy February ARW Friends, From the President As of this writing, we are 3-1/2 weeks into the new year. Have you kept your New Year s resolutions? Maybe you are like me and don t make resolutions because I end up slipping and falling. I try to just do the best I can throughout the year by being a better and more caring person like all of us Republicans. Thank goodness Congress passed the CR for a short period of time! I believe Schumer looks like a total failure. I talked to someone the other day and he said President Trump will get his wall, eliminate the current visa program and end chain migration. Let s continue to put pressure on Congress so this comes to fruition! We have so many great things coming up in the next few months. At our February meeting, we will host a candidate s forum for the CD 8 Congressional district. I hope you plan on attending as this will be very informative and give you a chance to meet the candidates. In May, we will host a Fashion Show and we are so excited about this event! Tracy, our 3 rd Vice President, will have more information for you in her post. Invite all your friends! It is going to be a great shopping experience for everyone! June 2, we are planning our candidate s forum for all candidates running for state and federal offices. We have postponed the Membership Tea to a later date - we will keep you informed. I happened to run across this article on Presidential trivia and thought it would be fun and informative to share for President s month. George Washington was the only American president to be unanimously elected. John F. Kennedy was the first president to hold a press conference on television. Theodore Roosevelt was the first president to call his residence in Washington the White House. Prior to his term, it had been called the Executive Mansion or the President s House. Lyndon B. Johnson was the first American president to name an African American to his cabinet. Harry S. Truman s mother, a Confederate sympathizer, refused to sleep in Lincoln s bed during a White House visit. George H.W. Bush is distantly related to Presidents Franklin Pierce, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Gerald Ford, Benedict Arnold, Marilyn Monroe and Winston Churchill. Ulysses S. Grant was the first president to run against a women candidate, Virginia Woodhull, the nominee of the Equal Rights Party in Zachary Taylor received his nomination for presidency late because he refused all postage due correspondences. Thomas Jefferson wrote his own epitaph never mentioning that he served as President. His epitaph read Author of the Declaration of American Independence, Author of the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom and the Father of the University of Virginia. Abraham Lincoln was a man of perseverance. Before Lincoln s election as the 16 th president of the United States, he failed as a business man, storekeeper, and farmer. He also failed in his first attempt to obtain political office when he sought the office of speaker, in his first attempt to go to Congress, when he sought the appointment to the US Land Office, when he ran for the US Senate and when friends sought for him the nomination for the vice-presidency in Herbert Hoover approved The Star-Spangled Banner as the national anthem. Happy Valentine s Day Everyone! Arlene Goldblatt

Tracy Livingston, M.Ed. From the Treasurer Donna Stawicki Hi Ladies! Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Donna Stawicki and I m the new treasurer for I ve lived in AZ for 38 years and I m proud to be a lifelong Republican. I worked over 2 years for the State of Arizona in several different agencies. During my time with the State, all of my positions were in accounting and budgeting. I look forward to serving in this position and working with the members of the Executive Committee.

5 AzFRW Legislative Committee Update The second regular session of Arizona s 53 rd Legislature officially opened on January 8. The last day on which bills may be introduced in the Senate, without obtaining special permission to do so at a later time, is January 29 and the House deadline is February 2. As of January 26, more than 955 bills and resolutions have been filed. To view a list of bills, to track legislation, or to obtain information, go to Azleg.gov/bills. Three Regular Session bills have received special public attention thus far and include a renewed legislative effort to remove Arizona from participation in the Electoral College and, instead, automatically award all 11 of Arizona s electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote regardless of which candidate was chosen by Arizona voters; effectively legalizing possession of marijuana in Arizona of an amount that is less than 1 ounce; limiting State and county political party use of proxies to only two proxies per person; a new criminal law requiring all private transfers of firearms - including loaning a gun to a friend or bequeathing a gun to a relative - to be conducted through a federal firearms licensee (failure to comply would be a felony). A House Continuing Resolution has been introduced to eliminate AZ voters from electing their party nominee for U. S. Senate. Instead, Republican State House and Senate members would meet to nominate 2 Republican candidates for the office, Democrat legislators would do the same, and then AZ voters would choose from among those chosen 4 candidates in the November general election. In addition to the start of the Legislature s regular session, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey called a special session of the Legislature to run concurrently with the regular session and which will focus on the current opioid crisis. The special session convened on January 22, hearings began Jan 23 and the Governor s proposed legislative package limiting opioid prescriptions to five days, restricting the amount of pain medication which can be prescribed for many individuals, and earmarking $10 million for treatment for those battling addiction but who are unable to afford treatment costs was passed by the legislature on January 25. Rae Chornenky AzFRW Legislative Committee Chair Republican Legislative District 22 Chairman Arizona Republican Party Executive Committee Member-at-Large, CD 8 From the Committees Americanism Bonnie Hochberg Lincoln on Reverence for the Laws On January 27, 1838, when he was almost twenty-nine years old, Abraham Lincoln delivered an address before the Young Men s Lyceum in Springfield, Illinois, entitled The Perpetuation of Our Political Institutions. In his speech he argued that liberty could not survive

6 without reverence for laws, a theme prompted in part by the recent murder of an abolitionist by a mob in Alton, Illinois. Let every American, every lover of liberty, every well-wisher to his posterity, swear by the blood of the Revolution, never to violate in the least particular the laws of the country, and never to tolerate their violation by others. As the Patriots of Seventy-six did to the support of the Declaration of Independence, so to the support of the Constitution and laws, let every American pledge his life, his property, and his sacred honor. Let every man remember that to violate the law is to trample on the blood of his father, and to tear the character of his own, and his children s, liberty. Let reverence for the laws be breathed by every American mother to the lisping babe that prattles on her lap. Let it be taught in schools, in seminaries, and in colleges. Let it be written in primers, spelling books, and in almanacs. Let it be preached from the pulpit, proclaimed in legislative halls, and enforced in courts of justice. And, in short, let it become the political religion of the nation; and let the old and the young, the rich and the poor, the grave and the gay, of all sexes and tongues, and colors and conditions, sacrifice unceasingly upon its altars. QUESTIONS ABOUT GOVERNMENT CONTROL Guest article Jan Martinson, Life Member ARW We are a nation of 325 million people. We have limited control over the behavior of our 535 elected representatives in Congress. We somewhat have control over the president and the vice president. But there are seven unelected people who have life and death control over our economy and here to say our lives and our life style. These seven governors of the Federal Reserve Board controls our money supply. Its governors are appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate and serve 14 year staggered terms. They have the power to cripple an economy, as they did during the 1920s and early 1930s. Their policy threw the economy into the Great Depression. I have heard most of my life that the Great Depression was caused by a massive stock market crash. Nothing could be further from the truth! The Great Depression was caused by government failure led by the Federal Reserve, which had been established in The next government failure was the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, which increased U.S. tariffs by more than 50%. Those failures were compounded by President Franklin D. Roosevelt s New Deal legislation whose theory was to spend, spend, spend. They soon saw that spending more money did not work. The bottom line is that the Federal Reserve Board, the Smoot- Hawley tariffs and FDR s New Deal polices turned what would have been a two to four-year sharp downturn into a 16 year depression. Here is my question about the Federal Reserve Act of How much sense does it make for us to give seven unelected people life and death control over our economy and our very lives? I think it is time that the Federal Reserve went away and a new way of doing things, should be established!

Attached is a simple tally sheet where you can write in those hours, starting from July 2015 through June 2017 (you can estimate for April, May and June). They will all roll up to the higher level Campaign Awards tally. Examples of these hours are: Non-Paid campaign activities (like volunteering for a candidate, getting petitions signed Work done at home on mailings, making posters, making phone calls, computer work etc. Time in session (and travel portal to portal) at Arizona Republican Party Convention, Maricopa County Statutory Meeting, and Republican National Committee Convention Time spent as a Precinct Committeeman and/or Precinct Captain Working as a non-paid poll watcher on Election Day Use the Community column for hours spent supporting activities like Caring for America committees and projects.
