3 DPDC JUNE 2016 Newsletter Page 3 of 7 Meet the Candidate 8th CD Representative TOM NELSON Tom Nelson is the sole Democratic candidate for Congressional Representative for Wisconsin s 8th Congressional District. The current incumbent, Reed Ribble, has decided not to run for re-election. Currently, Nelson is the County Executive of Outagamie County, having taken office on April 19, 2011, after defeating former Republican State Treasurer of Wisconsin Jack Voight by roughly 52% to 48%. Nelson served in the Wisconsin State Assembly representing the 5th Assembly District (northeastern Outagamie County and the Town of Maple Grove) from He was first elected to the Assembly in 2004, defeating Republican incumbent Becky Weber. He was re-elected twice In the Assembly he was assigned to the standing committees on health, insurance, rural development and transportation and, notably, was elected Assembly Majority Leader in Rather than seek re-election to the Assembly, in 2010, Nelson ran for the position of Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin. On September 14, he won the Democratic nomination in a four-way race, winning an absolute majority (52%) over state senator Spencer Coggs (21%) and two others. Nelson and running mate Tom Barrett were defeated in the 2010 general election by the Republican ticket of Rebecca Kleefisch and Scott Walker. New Home For Door Dems Margaret Lockwood and Allin Walker have provided a great meeting/office space in the lower level of the newly opened at 7 Second Ave, Sturgeon Bay. Entry is from Michigan St. at the rear. The office features a blackboard wall, men s & women's restrooms, and Wi-Fi internet access. ENTER HERE
4 DPDC JUNE 2016 Newsletter Page 4 of 7 Famous Quote Humor for the Day The worst government is often the most moral. One composed of cynics is often very tolerant and humane. But when fanatics are on top there is no limit to oppression. - H. L. Mencken NOTES FROM THE CHAIR In a recent Door Co. Democratic party Board meeting there was enthusiasm, volunteering, laughter, ideas and an ownership to the responsibility of getting Democrats elected. We have 5 new Board members with important perspectives that are tied to actions. This energy is contagious and so important. We have a structure and ideas and agendas and a monumental election in front of us. Please step in to the mix and add your energy, your ideas, your support. I hope that all of this enthusiasm is contagious and grows to include yours. Let's take control of our democratic process and spend the next 4 months educating, encouraging and working towards our mission of getting the fine candidates who want to represent us elected. Please join us at the Margaret Lockwood Gallery basement, which is the Democratic Party Office, on June 30 at 6:00pm. We need you! Kathleen Finnerty Co-chair, Door County Democratic Party
5 DPDC JUNE 2016 Newsletter Page 5 of 7 DPW State Convention - Reports by DPDC Delegates DPW State Convention a Fascinating Event. by Marybeth Mattson, Director, DPDC The Unity Fair was excellent, featuring tables for many politicians and DNC hopefuls, campaign pins and stickers, and more information than one person could possibly take in in one day, though I tried to talk to everyone a bit. The speakers addressed many of the top issues most important to many democrats, though if they had coordinated their topics, I think they could have covered more issues... As a voting delegate I enjoyed the process of discussing, amending, and voting to pass (or not) each of the resolutions, including the floor resolution to abolish Super Delegates in the future and urge current super delegates to vote proportionately according to the primary results. We also selected delegates to the national convention and heard from each of them in turn before voting for those we believed would fight hardest for the issues, platform, and candidate we believe in. While a long (and at times irritating) process, I found it informative and energizing. I would encourage anyone interested in making a difference in the process to attend and participate in the next state convention, I know I will! DNC Delegates Selected by Joseph Lopez and Josiah Robbin, Directors, DPDC There where 12 candidates running to fill four seats on the Democratic National Committee. They will represent us at the Convention in July. Two women and two men were to be chosen. They all gave impassioned speeches on why they should receive our votes, the last gentlemen even backed out on stage and gave reasons why others were better choices. This caused much dismay to the other candidates supporters. Dull it was not. Our Wisconsin Democratic National Committee representatives are. Martha Love - Re-elected to the committee and a representative since She has served the party in many ways over the years. She has served as State Party Chair and 1 st Vice Chair, is currently a AFSCME Union Member, 4 th Congressional district treasurer, DPW Black Caucus member, DPW Executive Committee member, Milwaukee County Democratic Party Exec. Board Member. She is also founding member of the Human Trafficking Task Force of Greater Milwaukee and Vice chair Milwaukee County Human Rights Commission. Andrew Werthmann - A third term Eau Claire City Counsel member who served as campaign manager for State Senator Kathleen Vinehout's first campaign. He also works for a National clean energy and environmental policy nonprofit. Jason Rae - Re-elected to the committee. He has served the party for more than a decade and at many levels. He has been Vice Chair of the Barron County Democrats, Chair of the Platform and Resolutions Committee, Chair of the College Democrats. He has also authored our 2008, 2012, and 2016 Delegate Selection Plans. Janet Bewley - A Senator since 2008 from Ashland, representing a big chunk of rural northern Wisconsin. She has been a champion of Wisconsin's middle class families, an advocate for education and infrastructure funding as well as healthcare and criminal justice reform.
6 DPDC JUNE 2016 Newsletter Page 6 of 7 WARNING: Telephone Polling Scam by Ron Maclean Beware of a pleasant, articulate voice from Informed Electorate PAC asking you to take 40 seconds to answer a poll question. The question is easily answered after which the Caller will ask if they can call again with another question in a week or two. The next call or two are just as easy and pleasant. After answering another question, the Caller will say that next time he will explain the importance of their polling. By this time they apparently believe you are hooked, because the next call is the Hard Sell. You are asked for a $20 donation to help defray the cost of polling. Answering no is not accepted without a very strong pitch. So just HANG UP! In conversation with the Caller I found that their website is This website is owned by an organization in Australia. Its website is very new - began this spring. I could find nowhere that is publishing their survey result. I think their only purpose is to collect your money. EXECUTIVE BOARD NEWS Make-up of the Executive Board has undergone significant change during the past two months. Chairman Garrett Cohn and Director Tammy Sternard both resigned. Garrett has since moved back to the Chicago area. Kathleen Finnerty and Mary Ann Zjala now serve as Co-Chairs and Bill Perloff replaces Kathleen as Vice-Chair. In addition, five vacancies were filled by Josiah Robben, Joseph Lopez, Taylor Havel, Charolette Baierl, and Marybeth Mattson shown left to right. Significantly, these five new Directors all provide fresh perspectives, add new energy and represent demographics previously missing from the Board. newsletter ends
