Addressing the Issues Publisher: Wyoming Association of Nutrition & Foodservice Professionals Volume No: XXVI Issue No: 9 January 2017 New Year s Resolutions A New Year's resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western Hemisphere but also found in the Eastern Hemisphere, in which a person makes a promise to do an act of self-improvement or something slightly nice, such as opening doors for people beginning from New Year's Day Popular goals include resolutions to: Improve physical well-being: eat healthy food, lose weight, exercise more, eat better, drink less alcohol, and quit smoking. At the start of each year, many people are resolving to eat healthier so they can lose some weight or undo the results of an indulgent holiday season. But weight loss isn t the only reason to change up our eating habits. Sometimes eating more healthfully simply makes us feel happier or better. Follow some of our tips to treat yourself to healthy eating in the New Year. 1. Moderate, don t deprive. No need to go cold turkey forever when it comes to your favorite treats. Aim to eat nutritious foods your body loves 80 percent of the time. Use that other 20 percent to treat yourself a bit. 2. Graze healthfully. Tide yourself over between meals with healthy snacks. Whether your thing is sweet or savory, crunchy or chewy, there are plenty of options for snacking smart. Bonus: Not being too ravenous at the next meal might make it easier to eat slowly, notice your body s fullness cues, and not overeat. 3. Eat fresh produce throughout year. Keep an eye on what s in season because eating fresh means eating the tastiest fruits and veggies year round. 4. Indulge smarter. Chocolate-dipped strawberries? Choco-Nut popcorn? Yes, please. Lower sugar doesn t have to mean less deliciousness. Continued on page Mission: Position the Certified Dietary Manager as the expert in foodservice management and food safety. 2 Greetings Wyoming ANFP Family, I would like to be the first to wish you all a very Happy New Year!!! 2017 is going to be awesome!! I would like to say thank you to each of you for your support the past two years as your State President. Steve takes office officially at our Spring conference in Thermopolis and he is going to do great things. He has been working hard on planning for his leadership role as he takes the helm. We have a great membership and all of you have been a driving force on the success of our chapter. There are many chapters that struggle and the strength lays in our members. If you would like to learn a leadership role or volunteer in any way, please share your gifts with the membership. We are always willing to mentor and teach anyone that wants to help us continue to be a strong chapter. Thank you for an amazing 2016!!! See you in 2017!!! God Bless each and every one of you in this coming new year! Never Stop Growing. 2
Wyoming ANFP is on-line and on Facebook. Be sure to visit the Wyoming ANFP website at: for the National ANFP website. As of December 31, 2016, the Wyoming ANFP is 57 members strong; 54 Certified Professional members, 4 Professional non-certified members. Please contact our Membership Leader, Ronda Krouch (rmkrouch@yahoo.com) or any officer, if you know of a new member or student, so we know who they are and how to keep them informed about events taking place in the Wyoming ANFP. 5 th Krista Bundy 12 th Chanthara Virchack 13 th Jessica Holcomb 26 th Sandra Clark Happy Birthday to All! 3
What could go wrong? The new CMS regulations have gone into effect putting the Certified Dietary Manager as one of the requirements for food services director at facilities receiving Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services reimbursement. Why do we need the Safe Food for Seniors Act? What could go wrong? Indeed, the passage of the Safe Food for Seniors Act is no longer needed unless someone in Congress succeeds using the Congressional Review Act process to stop the CMS regulations from going into effect. According to Wikipedia, The law empowers Congress to review, by means of an expedited legislative process, new federal regulations issued by government agencies and, by passage of a joint resolution, to overrule a regulation. Congress is given 60 legislative days to disapprove, after which the rule will go into effect. Because congress works so few days a year the 60 legislative days fall within the time frame for the process to begin. According to those associated with ANFP who have worked to build relationships with members of Congress the usage of the CRA is not likely because of the bi-partisan support shown for the Safe Food for Seniors Act. Still, this is a new congress with both houses and the presidency controlled by one party. In addition, there were 9800 comments during the comment period of which many were negative concerning other parts of the new CMS regulations. Our FoodService Rewards points total stands at 17,923 points. codes and expiration date may be sent to Robin Hilbird at: rhilbird@mhccwyo.org 4
SUCCESS! On September 28, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued its final regulations for long-term care facilities. The CDM is listed first amongst qualifications for the newly designated Director of Food and Nutrition Services. It is my belief that we need to continue our work, to bring the CDM requirement to Senior Centers, school systems, including pre-school and daycare, and detention centers. The majority of these locations have no one in the food service operation that is truly qualified to head the foods service operation. Wyoming ANFP will continue our Day at the Capitol efforts to keep our legislatives bodies educated about the Wyoming ANFP and the CDM. Until next month..live long, and Never Stop Giving! 5

The holiday season is now over and we have entered the new year of 2017! Happy New Year! This will be a year of new challenges and opportunities in our personal and professional lives. Let s work together to make 2017 a great year for Wyoming ANFP! 1. You will recall we had a session on EMERGENCY PREPARADNESS at our spring conference in Casper. Here is the site Terrie Wilson referred to as an aid to helping in our planning process for emergencies. It is long document but very helpful information: 2. ANFP DAY AT THE CAPITOL 2017 Our 3 rd annual DATC is Monday, February 6, 2017 in Cheyenne. This year is a policy session with 40 days rather 20 days like last year for the budget session. Our plans include: Attend both House & Senate Health Committee meetings Distribute updated WY ANFP brochure and healthy snack to 60 state representatives & 30 state senators will include information on new CMS regulations on role of CDM Pride In Foodservice Week Luncheon with state elected officials, House & Senate Health Committee members, reps of Senators Enzi & Barrasso, Congresswoman-Elect Cheney, and area dietary managers and administrators. Get us s of any CDM or administrator you know in Cheyenne Laramie area. Photo Op with perhaps Governor and Chairs of House & Senate Health Committees 3. SPRING CONFERENCE Our Spring Conference is April in Thermopolis. Thanks to TJ and Cindy and others who are helping plan a great conference. More details ad registration information will be coming soon. Our Wednesday evening welcome event will be an outdoor BBQ at 5:30 pm at the Kiwanis Shelter in the Hot Springs State Park. Feel free to bring your swimming suit and plan on soaking in the hot mineral springs while you are in Thermopolis WY ANFP THEME In preparing for my term as ANFP President beginning in April I am working on ideas for a theme for my 2 year term. Felicia s theme has been Never Stop Growing. I would like to make this a contest for our WY ANFP membership to help come up with an idea for our new theme. So get your thinking caps on and send me thoughts or ideas by March 1 at stevelanderwyo@gmail.com. Some areas I want to consider in my term as President in my theme include: 7
personal excellence recruiting & mentoring new chapter leaders team building membership recruitment & engagement We will announce the theme and winner at our April conference in Thermopolis. We hope everyone will send in an idea or thought. 5. NATIONAL ANFP ANNUAL CONFERENCE & EXPO (ACE) The ANFP National Annual Conference & Expo (ACE) will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada June 6-9, We are very excited with the prospect of sending 5-6 delegates from Wyoming which is a record for Wyoming ANFP! Please let Felicia or me know if you would like to attend and would like more information. 8
Continued from page 1 5. Understand emotional eating. There is a link between how we feel and how we eat, particularly when it comes to stress. Figuring out what kind of eater you are and whether you look to food to comfort you in times of anger, boredom, stress, or sadness will help you formulate a plan for making different decisions when faced with those emotions. 6. Make holidays, birthdays, and special occasions a little healthier. Holidays and special occasions are always a good reason to enjoy delicious food. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to celebrate without going overboard. 7. Be mindful at meal times Staying tuned in to what you re eating (as opposed to the phone or T.V.) is a great way to eat until you re full, but not beyond. Being relaxed and mindful can also help you heed fullness cues. 8. but don t overthink it. Recent research shows that the more time we take to think about whether or not we should eat something, the more likely we are to find a reason to justify eating it. Checking in with yourself about your mood and are great habits to have, but remember to trust your gut (pun intended). 9. Start the day with healthy. Studies suggest that eating breakfast is linked to sustained weight loss and weight management, particularly when that breakfast is nutritious and fiber-rich and high in protein. 10. Use the buddy system. Having a partner with the same healthy-eating ambitions has been shown to help both people reach their goals. If you don t yet know anyone with goals similar to yours, find community online. Use #healthyishappy to see what kinds of awesome choices people are making and to inspire your own. 9
Stay tuned for what s coming to the Wyoming ANFP this April It s in the Water Happy Holidays! To our sponsors for the continuous support you show to Wyoming ANFP every year! Davidson s Eggs Fieldstone Bakery Sysco Montana Thank you for all you do! 10
