LEADERSHIP LENS: Theme- The Power of Leadership Charisma I really didn t find a TED talk on the leadership of charisma. I searched the web for something that inspired me professionally. I chose a site from videolectures.net of the title The power of Leadership Charisma by Deiric McCann, there are references to President Kennedy, Oprah Winfrey and Steve Jobs in the presentation. I was moved by this lecture in the fact that it moved me that in challenged me to become more productive employee. When an employee is in engaged then we are more apt to produce. Highly engaged and dedicated people are more likely to succeed. Engagement is going to be the most one of the most primary concerns of anybody who is a manager or leader. What engages individuals is based upon a job fit or by the leadership. Charisma has been identified as a gift from Gift. However, one aspect of the lecture indicated that isn t a gift from God, but it comes easier to other than others. People with high charisma make people want to do their very best and people like the thing that you do. It all comes down to behavior and ANYONE can learn to be a charismatic leader. Charisma and engagement seem mirror one another or are the same in perspective. A charismatic leader can get individuals to do something or results they get because they engage people. The great leaders engage followers want to engage and go the extra mile. The charismatic leaders create and maintain a work environment where people are emotionally and intellectually committed to the organization s goals. I think one of the main aspects that made
so much sense was the fact that a charismatic leader creates a common sense of purpose where individuals are more inclined invest in extra energy and work time. Charisma is very practical. Having charisma is an important quality in any leadership position, and this is often overlooked by traditional leadership standards. Charisma is a very important quality to any successful leader, and will help open doors for you that would most likely be shut. Charisma is a quality that all highly successful people must develop, or fine tune once in their lives, to maximize their success in leadership roles, as well as use it to gain a great advantage over their competition. Charisma can be explained as a personal magnetism that helps draw people to you, and makes them want to cooperate with you and work with you to accomplish your dreams. It is a kind of charm that goes over and above the status quo of leadership. Charisma gets people engaged. It is almost like a personal magic that draws support and enthusiasm to you. An experienced leader with a certain level of charisma has a great advantage to those who can t seem to motivate and inspire followers the same way a charismatic leader can. Charisma helps to build confidence. People always seem naturally drawn to individuals who have a certain level of charisma, and people will go out of their way to support you, as well as open doors for career, and bring you opportunities that would otherwise not be available to you. Any motivational or leadership speaker will tell you the key to developing charisma is having a strong, confident purpose. Leaders who have high levels of charisma, are confident leaders who have a clear vision of what they want to accomplish. They also have a clear vision
of who they are, how they ve gotten to where they are, and exactly where they re going. They re focused on accomplishing great goals, as well as accomplishing some great purpose. A naturally charismatic leader is a naturally confident leader, who will let no one stand in their way from accomplishing their goals. Four steps were established to become a charismatic leader and engage individuals: 1. Decide to be a Charismatic Leader you are going to do what it takes! 2. Continually enhance you self-confidence make the decision to become a charismatic leader and build a foundation for your charisma. 3. Polish your physical charisma - no one is going to trust you and have to engage in your trust. Behave like a charismatic leader. People are programmed to mimic others. So when you smile at someone, it almost automatic that they return a smile. When you make a conscience decision to smile and show that body language, people automatic will trust and engage. Smiling almost makes everyone feel comfortable and fell confident. If you go around the office without a smile, that lack of want will go around the office. Seven Positive Gestures to use when you are making a presentation or convince or persuade. These help to become more positive when you come across: 1. I have nothing to hide always open your solar plexus and have your hands wide open. 2. I mean this sincerely (from the heart) hands displayed down and open indicates a positive gesture. Open hands displayed down show an authoritative
and controlling effect and is threatening to people. One s body language is aligned with what you are saying. Always try to have the basketball hand gesture. People believe your body language and gestures more than your words. 3. Assertive not Aggressive 4. I m in control 5. This is well thought out 6. That s that 7. I m confident of my position Things to keep individual engages and to help you polish your charisma. Watch your posture when you are trying to persuade people. Keep your head up and look ahead and of course smile. Some things you should never: 1. Hands kept away from your face plants a suspicion in one s mind 2. Hands over the mouth kids do this when they tell lies. 3. Arms crossed closed body language and hides the solar plexus, don t close your arms when trying to communicate. Shows one is defensive. 4. Hands over genitals- subconsciously what are the people going to do me, shows nervousness and insecurities. Safe position is hands to the side of your body. 5. Objects in front of the body- shows a distrust or insecurity. 6. Clench fists shows anger. Charismatic leaders smile, walk tall, talk to individuals and crack a smile. People want to be like you and will eventually warm up to you. They also feel like they are worthy.
Also these leaders touch individuals in an appropriate time and manner. Fifty-five percent of information that you collect from someone you collect pre-verbally before they even say something by the way they look or sound. I believe that I am a charismatic leader because I have the ability to persuade, convince and live for the highest purpose for the best. I believe I am fun and magnetic. I have a certain passion for life. I think one needs to have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish, then you need to be focused on setting goals for yourself, and making plans to achieve them without delay. A naturally charismatic leader is a naturally confident leader, who will let no one stand in their way from accomplishing their goals. The clearer you are about your purpose, and how you are planning to achieve it, will naturally attract others to you who will help and support you in any way they can. If you are perceived as a charismatic and determined leader, then others will naturally follow you, and want to help you achieve your goals and dreams. Charisma is a true way of expressing yourself and the ability to persuade others. I think that charisma like leadership- is amoral. Ghandi and Hitler were charismatic, but one lived for the highest purposes and the other for the worst.
