` Nothing is as fast as the speed of trust. Stephen M.Covey
` What is trust? What does it mean to you? Can you define it? What does it look like?
TRUST ACTIVITY 2 VOLUNTEERS THAT KNOW EACH OTHER 2 VOLUNTEERS THAT ARE STRANGERS `
CAR- CAR ACTIVITY One person, the car, stands in front with his or her eyes closed and hands held in front of the chest with palms outward as your bumpers. The second person, the driver, with eyes open, stands behind with hands on the shoulders of the car. Keeping his/her eyes open, the driver will steer the sightless car around the area, avoiding collisions with other pairs. Remember that the safety of the other person is your responsibility, so you must show compassion and care. Any questions?
THE IMPORTANCE OF TRUST Anticipating the emotional effects that decisions and actions might have on others Responding tactfully and respectfully in emotional situations Eliciting the perceptions, feelings, and concerns of others Recognizing that conflict is inevitable and using it to strengthen relationships
CAN I TRUST YOU? ØWith my story? ØWith my pain? ØWith my kids? ØWith my life? ØWith my heart? ØWith my hopes? ØWith my dreams?
Ø Ø Ø Ø Ø Ø TRUST Confidence in someone s authenticity An assessment we make about our faith in a person s reliability Honesty between people Human experience Belief that another will act in a predictable way, is concerned with my welfare, and is able to act in my interest (Putnam 2000) Willingness to be vulnerable to the actions of another based upon expectations that the party will perform an act of importance (Rousseau, Sitkin, Burt, Camerer 1998) Ø Competence, openness, benevolence, reliability (Mishra 1996) Ø Trust can be situation specific...particularly in a work setting.
MISPERCEPTIONS ABOUT TRUST Ø Trust automatically exists among people. Ø Trust is soft. Ø Trust is irrelevant to the bottom line. Ø Trust is either there or not there and you can t do anything about it. Ø You can only trust someone you agree with. Ø Power and authority automatically result in trust. Ø Experience justifies trust. Ø Expertise results in trust. Ø Trust is a one way street. Ø I can exert trust on demand.
