COMMUNICATING THE SPIRIT WAY : MOTIVATIONAL Interviewing and NaEve American Worldview INTRODUCTIONS & WELCOME: BETTY R. POITRA, Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe, Belcourt, North Dakota DENISE E. LINDQUIST, White Earth Band of Ojibwe, Naytahwaush, MN ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Dr. Jeffery Linkenback, Montana Institute Denise Esty Lindquest, DHS, ADAD, American Indian Unit PURPOSE Why are we doing this? To explore the alignment of the Spirit of Motivational Interviewing and Indigenous populations. 1
Personal Story Core Spiritual Values Relationships Kinship Clan system Family Respect Wisdom Connection Compassion Honesty SPIRIT MI Partnership Connection Compassion Honesty Wisdom Respect Metaphors Similes 2
EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE MI is one of many EBP s being utilized. MI has proven outcomes and success rates, engagement and treatment completion. MI has not been normed for validity and reliability with all populations FIDELITY Being adherent to the theory and practice of MI Knowledge, competence, and practice You build in continuous process or practice improvement into the delivery of MI, (ex) skills building through coaching, auto tapes, and MITI Integrating cultural aspects does not take away the fidelity of MI Contemplate WISDOM Renewal, Recovery, Return to Spirit process. This process gives us knowledge of what is truth and good judgment to proceed in a good way. 3
Partnership Evocation MI Spirit Acceptance Compassion EXPLORING THE OVERLAP/CONNECTION Indigenous Connection Respect Honesty Wisdom Listen Learn Honor Acceptance Humility Autonomy MI Partnering Exploring Compassion Acceptance Collaboration Respect Autonomy Integrity RELATIONAL WORLDVIEW Circular Worldview vs Linear Worldview Symbols System of Circles & Cycles System of balance & harmony System of Interrelatedness System of Interconnectedness System of Interdependence Metaphors Pictographs Logical Scientific Time- oriented Cause Effect New Cause New Effect Tends to promote labeling & stigma 4
SPIRIT Ø Four Broad Processes of MI Ø Engaging- relational foundation Ø Connections, relationship, listen, learn, respect, honor the wisdom within Ø Focusing- Ø Affirmations Ø Planning Mo)va)onal Interviewing; a fit for American Indians Ø An approach in which one becomes a helper in the change process and expresses their acceptance of the person. Ø Seven teachings of Wisdom, Respect, Bravery, Love, Honesty, Humility, Truth all contribute to help and acceptance of the person. 5
Ø A way to interact with people, and a style of counseling that can help resolve the ambivalence that prevents clients from realizing their personal goals. Ø Traditional American Indian parenting meant children learned from role models and oral tradition; stories, and they were told often times without a conclusion so the individual listening could come to their own conclusion. Ø By listening and observing and having their own experience by natural consequences. Ø They did not just have a father and mother who cared for them. They would have many relatives to teach them. And nature is a great teacher. Ø American Indian people need time to process. When they have time to think things through, they will get back to you and what they tell you, they will do. Ø Essentially, motivational interviewing activates the capability for beneficial change that everyone possesses. Ø Many times change has been forced. Reservations, relocation, termination policy, treaties and other policy. American Indians like everyone else prefer change that comes from within. Ø Much of todays change is going back to traditional ways as they are the healthy way, the values that kept an individual and community on the red road, a path to health and wellness. Ø MI Avoids argument and direct confrontation Ø Traditional way of asking for help was to let the person know what you need and give them the opportunity to respond with what they can help with rather than asking directly. Asking directly was considered disrespectful behavior and could shame the person being asked if they couldn t help. 6
Important Principles to Keep in Mind Ø Honor the client's anger and sense of dehumanization. Ø Many times when AI learn about historical trauma and get in touch with what happened there is anger. Acknowledging that it is normal and important to feel and experience. We would normally use drugs or alcohol to medicate those feelings. We also tell people we do not go there to stay there when remembering the historical trauma, rather we go there to learn from this and to move on. We help people to forgive. Not forget but we can and do forgive. The forgiving is for us not for anyone else. This was the purpose of why we met today MIIGWECH (THANK YOU) Contact information: Betty R.
