ADOPTION OF AGENDA / APPROVAL OF CONSENT CALENDAR Motion Passed: as amended moving items for further discussion, F.1.a (after G.1), F.1.b (after G.8), F.2.b (after G.2) by Trustees Gerard and Arnett, with a motion by Gino Borgioli and a second by Tom Arnett. 4 D. PUBLIC COMMENT / COMMUNICATIONS The following individuals addressed the Board Bethany Van Alstine, Nordstrom teacher speaking behalf of six colleagues at Nordstrom campus. The 5th grade students and their teachers are housed in 30 year old decaying classrooms. Would like for the issues with the portables to be fixed. She extended an invitation for those interested to see the portables for themselves. Heather Rottenborn, Spoke concerning the low teacher pay and high turnover rate and how it affects the science program. Heather is a teacher at Sobrato and fears for the science program at the high school. States that high turnover is not good for the program or for the students. Susan Polson Senior member in the science at Live Oak and has been teaching for 15 years. Feels that we need to attract good and quality science teachers and emphasize that she is concerned that teachers cannot afford to stay in the area. E. COMMUNICATIONS President Ruebusch asked for a moment of silence in remembrance of Mary Francis. E.1. Closed Session Action Report (Government Code ) A.2.b.9. J.R., by and through his guardian ad litem, E.R. v. Morgan Hill Unified School District Civil Case 5:16-CV HRL was approved by the Board with a 7-0 vote, motion made by Gino Borgioli and a second by Ron Woolf. A.2.b.10. Settlement agreement OAH Case Nos and was approved by the Board with a 7-0 vote, motion made by Gino Borgioli and a second by Ron Woolf. E.2. Report: Student Board Member Faithy Limon reported the following events at the secondary sites: Central High School: Evergreen and Gavilan representatives have been on campus to help students with college applications. Open house will be on February 16th at 6pm. Central is participating in a basketball sports league called Pro Com. Students that have good attendance come to the after school practice program and are making progress in their classes are eligible each week. There is one more week for this quarter and new students from Live Oak and Sobrato and start on Feb 27th. Live Oak High School: Is hosting the Rock the Mock on Tuesday, March 7 where students can participate in mock interviews. Spring sports have started and the Live Oak black light dance coming up. Sobrato High School: ASB hosted their annual Winter Homecoming for the student body. Juniors were in first place for the rally and their decorations with the freshmen coming in last, sophomores in third and seniors in second place. Sobrato had over 800 attendees for the academics ceremony and the annual spaghetti feed will be the following week. Women s advocacy club is meeting on Friday and Rent, the school musical, is having their opening night on Friday the 21st. Spring sports have started as well. E.3. Reports: Superintendent/Staff Superintendent Betando, spent time at the Sobrato rally with the new trustees. Superintendent Betando spoke with Santa Clara County United for Health Leadership team and will be a member of that Board. They also discussed safe routes to schools. On January 18th Britton opened a bike room with the ribbon cutting ceremony. On Saturday January 21st, the Morgan Hill Values Youth Event was held at the CCC. There was a SELPA meeting on January 25th where a topic was the proposal to dismantle the SELPAS. Steve expressed his support for the proposal since that money will be sent directly to districts. On January 26th the Leadership of Morgan Hill announced the lead person of the year, Lisa DeSilva, who works with Community Solutions. Leadership Morgan Hill held their Leadership Day at the District Office and visited school sites. The superintendent explained that it is the season of academic assemblies. This was the first Page 4 of 9
5 time that Martin Murphy had the assemblies for 6th graders to be recognized for their academics. Parents expressed their anxiety and then enthusiasm about having their students go to 6th grade for middle school. 6th grade orientation was very exciting for the current 5th graders. On February 2nd, Britton had their volcano club fundraiser to go to Central America this year. Superintendent Betando shared that many people showed up for the remembering of Mary Francis. E.4. Employee Groups: Morgan Hill Federation of Teachers / Morgan Hill Classified Employee Association / Morgan Hill Educational Leaders Association Morgan Hill Classified Employee Association, representative not present Morgan Hill Educational Leaders Association, representative not present Morgan Hill Federation of Teachers, President Gemma Abels, thanked everyone for remembering Mary Francis. Martin Murphy will be work to keep a fund for the upkeep of the Murphy garden that will be dedicated the memory of Mary Francis. Gemma expressed her gratitude to everyone who attended the MHFT Day of Action. MHFT is moving forward working on the EL Master Plan. They are hoping that next Wednesday's mediation will be the last one for a while. Some of their requests are to have an extension of full day Kinder and a two year contract. Gemma explained her personal base salaries and increases as well as salaries and increases for the Superintendent and his staff. E.5. Board Member Reports Trustee Woolf, enjoyed seeing over 800 students at the Sobrato academic awards and is looking forward to the Live Oak awards. Thanked Sobrato High School HSC for the great gathering they had last week, their jazz band entertained the group before starting their meeting. Teachers Aid Coalition is putting on the Chocolate and Wine Valentine this Saturday and the Community Cultural Center. Trustee Borgioli, enjoyed going to the awards ceremonies and loved to see the students excel. Impressed with Britton's awards this year. The 7th grade level a high level of students receiving awards. Trustee Gerard, thanked MHFT s Day of Action, truly a moving and inspiring event that had well over 100 people in attendance. It was a very positive event, calling upon the values of people in Morgan Hill of being kind and supportive. Trustee Arnett, on January 21st he attended the Santa Clara County School Boards Association new board member orientation, met and had the privilege of sitting and engaging with people who work in education in the county and state level. He shared information from the speakers at the event stating that State funding is the problem of why we don't have any money to pay the teachers as much as they should be paid. Speakers encouraged people to reach out to state representatives. Trustee Patterson, on February 24th, Children's Advocacy Group has an event called The Fierce Opportunity of Now, which will discuss cross discipline and educations on how to raise up the students and how to dismantle the school to prison pipeline. Trustee Ruebusch, on January 18 th attended the Dedication of the Specialized "Bike Room" in partnership with Britton; on January 19 th attended MHFT's Day of Action, and presentation of our MHUSD's resolution; on January 20 th attended the ongoing planning for Read Across America on Dr. Seuss birthday, March 2 nd ; on January 21 st participated in the San Jose Women s March; on January 23 rd worked with Allan McCarthy, our retreat facilitator and author of the book Beyond Genius, Innovation and Luck, to plan our Board retreat on February 17 th to be held at the Villa Mira Monte; on January 25 th met with representatives of the Federation; on January 26 th attended the SCCSBA meeting and County Superintendent Jon Gundry presented; January 27 th attended the Leadership Morgan Hill Day of Education; went to Sacramento on January 27 th / 28th to attend CSBA s New President workshop; January 30 th met with Casino Fajardo and Kirsten Perez to further discuss the design build concept; attended the Home and School Club District meeting on February 3 rd at Sobrato; also on February 3 rd attended the New Board Orientation with Trustees Patterson and Murillo along with Superintendent Betando; February 6 th Page 5 of 9
6 attended the Sobrato Academic Awards; and is doing continuous planning and work for the TAC Wine and Chocolate event to be held February 11 th at the Community and Cultural Center. E.6. Approve amendment to the agreement between Morgan Hill Unified School District and Cleary Consultants, Inc. for additional services for the Removal Action Work Plan (RAW) for the Peet Road Property This item was moved from the Consent agenda for further discussion.
