PUBLIC COMMENT / COMMUNICATIONS The following individuals addressed the Board expressing their concerns regarding the administrator, moral, safety during recess, and the future of the students and community at Paradise Valley Engineering Academy: Megan Telfer, teacher and parent Rachel Marquardt, teacher and parent Denise David, parent Brenda Sandoval, parent Nehal Osman, parent Dawn Brickner, parent E. COMMUNICATIONS E.1. Closed Session Action Report (Government Code ) There was no report out. E.2. Report: Student Board Member Michelle Mestaz reported the following high school events: Sobrato, Grad night committee meeting is scheduled for March 13; March 19 is the School Site Council meeting, Athletics Boosters meeting and Career Day. Career day consists of various seminars from different career choices/fields. Central, March 5 is the start of the new semester; we volunteer at Cecilia s Closet on Tuesday s and Interact shirt pre-sales will be at the end of this week. Live Oak, Spring sports have officially started; the Academic Awards are Thursday, March 8; AP students are expected to take the respective exam for each AP class in which they are enrolled. The cost of each AP exam is $94 and can be purchased in the ASB office between February 8 and March 28, E.3. Reports: Superintendent / Staff Superintendent Betando, reported on Feb 8 he attended the Economic Development Committee meeting where they discussed the changes in the rental of commercial space and the development of housing in Morgan Hill; he participated in the Amgen Bide Race announcement and was in a tricycle race; he and Kirsten Perez accepted a grant from the Live Oak Foundation which will be officially announced in a future recognition; Feb 9 he attended the Britton Awards, more students received awards than in past years; Feb 10 attended the Chocolate & Wine for Valentine fundraiser put on by the Teacher Aide Coalition, who raise funds for teacher supplies; Feb 13, Rock the Mock was held at Live Oak; on Feb 14 prior to the Santa Clara County Superintendents meeting we attended the City Schools Collaborative, which is with San Jose since we have two schools and a large attendance area that is in San Jose; also on Feb 14, met with the City of San Jose with Kirsten Perez and Anessa Espinosa regarding plans to work towards getting a stadium at Sobrato HS; Feb 16 with Donna Ruebusch and attended the City / School Liaison meeting held at the District Office; and toured Cupertino HS with Kirsten Perez and Casino Fajardo; on Feb 28 attended the School Linked Services Committee meeting; and, with Donna Ruebusch attended the Santa Clara County School Board s Association meeting; on Mar 1 attended the Chamber of Commerce Breakfast meeting with, where I shared information on our Visual and Performing Arts Page 3 of 7
4 and what safety precautions we are taking relative to the Parkland, Florida shooting; and, attended and was a judge at the Martin Murphy Talent Show. Dr. Zavala, Assistant Superintendent Educational Services reported that March is Youth Arts Month and Heather Nursement has displayed many pieces of art work around the District Office from our school sites and pointed out the wall in the Board Room that has been dedicated to the Sobrato students. We will continue to honor our art students by continuing to display some of their artwork in the District Office. Last week a meeting was held on continuing the development of our VAPA (Visual and Performing Arts). We will present our plan to the Board at a future meeting. Fawn Myers, Assistant Superintendent Human Resources, reported that the Human Resources department has attended their first recruiting fair of the year at CSU Monterey Bay and have started the interview process with some of the good candidates from the fair. Announced Debbie Stewart as the new Principal of Los Paseos Elementary, Debbie has held this position as interim principal since the start of the school year. E.4. Reports: Board Members Trustee Woolf, spoke of his experience with the 4 th graders during the 4 th Annual Read-In; announced that the first TAC giveaway will be on March 19 at 3:30pm at PA Walsh Steam Academy; he attended the 2018 Celebrate Morgan Hill Awards Dinner and gave a shout out to Ariana Berumen, Live Oak student who won Student of the Year, Britton teacher Jim Green, Teacher of the Year, and Brian and Kathy Sullivan, Man and Woman of the Year. Trustee Ruebusch, announced that on Feb 15 the Live Oak Girls Varsity Basket Ball team took league and shared some positive experiences from the last game of the season; attended the Santa Clara County School Board Association with Superintendent Betando and spoke of the two Stanford researchers who were presenting on trauma and how trauma effects children. Research shows a mindset shift from looking at children wondering what s wrong with then to What happened to them. Bonnie Macs sent a copy of the slide show which she will share with the trustees; partnered with Kirsten Perez in reading to a 2 nd grade class at JAMM for the 4 th Annual Read-in; Mar 3 attended the Santa Clara County School Board Association s Legislative Brunch with Superintendent Betando, Trustee Woolf, SCCOE Trustee Claudia Rossi, and Bob Benevento; she will share her notes with the Board. Trustee Patterson, thanked our fiscal team for all of their time and hard work on Right Sizing the Budget and putting together the community forums. E.5. Reports: Employee Groups: Morgan Hill Federation of Teachers / Morgan Hill Classified Employees Association / Morgan Hill Educational Leaders Association Gemma Abels, Morgan Hill Federation of Teachers President, reported on the present negotiations; announced on April 24 the 3 rd Annual Friends and Family Festival at Nordstrom Elementary from 11:00am 3:00pm; March is the CFT Convention in Costa Mesa and will also be attending the Orange County March for our Lives. Locally they are working with parents to hold a March for our Lives in Morgan Hill; MHFT hopes to organize and transport some students to the march in San Jose; also, acknowledged the activisms the Federation has been seeing within our District, town and Country within the last several weeks. Is very proud of her fellow teachers in West Virginia who have left their classrooms so they could make teaching a sustainable profession in the mountaineer state; attended the AFT Cornell Collective Bargaining Conference in New York; attended a meeting where businesses learned how to prepare for ICE raids. Morgan Hill Classified Employees Association, representative not present Patrick Buscher, Morgan Hill Educational Association President, extended the associations congratulations to Jenna Mittleman and Debbie Stewart for their new appointments; our schools are presently looking at their campus procedures to ensure they are doing what they can to ensure the safety of our students and be prepared in the event of an unexpected incident on campus; MHELA will be part of Legislative Action Day on March 13; our Visual and Performing Arts committee is close to finalizing a master plan, as well as our Family Engagement Plans are being finalized; our Special Education department was able to attend the ACSA Every Child Symposium in San Diego.
