Presentation by Nordstrom Elementary Student Tegan Leong Nordstrom Elementary Principal, Barbara Neal introduced teacher Mrs. Goble and student Tegan Leong. Tegan presented to the Board her rendition of Vincent van Gogh. A.6.b. Acknowledge Sara Hamaguchi, Student Board Member for second trimester , and announce Miguel Alba, Student Board Member for third trimester Presented by President Benevento. The Board acknowledged and thanked Sara for her contribution to the Board for the second trimester and welcomed Miguel Alba for the third trimester. B. ADOPTION OF AGENDA / APPROVAL OF CONSENT CALENDAR Approve adoption of agenda as amended moving Items F-3 and F-13 from Consent to be addressed during General Business after item G-7 Motion Passed: passed with a motion by Ron Woolf and a second by Gino Borgioli. Report: Student Board Member Sara Hamaguchi reported Live Oak s Spirit Week and Winter Rally were held the week of January 20th and Club Food Day is scheduled for Thursday (February 12); Rock the Mock was today and the Academic Assembly will be on March 5. Central High School held a bake sale for the Rotary Speech Contest, and Interact is working on a mural for Downtown Morgan Hill. E.3. Reports: Superintendent/Staff Superintendent Betando, reported that he attended ACSA s Superintendents Symposium Jan 28-29; Leadership Morgan Hill held their annual Education Day at the district on Friday, Jan 29 and it was enjoyed by all. The day started in the board room and then all toured a few school sites - our schools on the tour really did a wonderful job showcasing their sites, very positive response was received by all; Home and School Club meeting was held on Jan 6; Teachers Aid Coalition held their Chocolate & Wine for Valentine fundraiser and auction it was a huge success; met with the United Way at the Gilroy Chamber and Rock the Mock was today at Live Oak this is a wonderful program hosted by Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce. American Association of University Women (AAUW) is sponsoring the film Girl Rising at the Granada for only $5.00; South County United Way is sponsoring low income Tax Assistance in Morgan Hill on Fridays from 6:00-8:30pm at the El Toro Youth Center, appointments are necessary. Assistant Superintendent, Kirsten Perez, reported the Food Service department visited Pittsburg Unified School District regarding the Farm to Table program; Christopher Bates our Transportation Supervisor is currently in Sacramento receiving his bus driving certification Facilities has been visiting sites and working with the principals to prioritize the work that could be added to our annual summer work projects, which are not part of Measure G funding but would fall within the Deferred Maintenance budget. We will bring the list to the board in the near future for approval. Assistant Superintendent, Norma Martinez-Palmer, our teachers have been working hard and continue to work successfully with Common Core Standards. Teachers attended the Next Generation of Science at the Santa Clara County Office of Education. Instructional Rounds are continuing every month at different schools. The State has released the interim assessments that will be taking place later in the spring. In the meantime, teachers are working to prepare our students. E.4. Employee Groups: Morgan Hill Federation of Teachers / Service Employees International Union / Morgan Hill Educational Leaders Association Morgan Hill Teachers Federation President, Theresa Sage deferred their time for the Sobrato High School Equal Opportunity Schools presentation. Service Employees International Union representative not present Morgan Hill Educational Leaders Association, Sobrato High School Principal Debbie Padilla reported on school site activities. E.5. Board Member Reports Trustee Woolf, reported he attended Britton Middle School Open House, which showcased all aspects of Britton s programs, it was a great event. Commend Jackson Academy principal, Patrick Buchser, parents and the Home & School Club presidents for putting together a wonderful meeting (H&SC) on Friday, and Jackson s 8 th grade instrumental band was fantastic, they all had smiles on their faces and it really shows that they take pride in their school. Also spoke of the Chocolate & Wine for Valentine event being a huge success, thanked everyone who attended. Trustee Borgioli, reported that he attended a few school Open Houses this week and was very impressed with Martin Murphy s icenter. Article in MH Life regarding Paradise Valley students and how technology effects student achievement and closing the achievement gap. Also attended Britton s Open House and spoke with a Special Education teacher regarding a program called System 44, she was very impressed on how she was able to improve the students reading and learning experience. 4 Trustee Ruebusch, thanked staff, teachers and classified staff for their contributions to the district. Was present at the January orientation at San Martin Gwinn for students who wish to join the Dual Immersion Program. Very dynamic presentation. Parents are very excited and principal was on hand to answer many questions, it was very engaging. Also attended the DELAC meeting at the end of January - very energized parent driven conversation, most exciting piece of information is how many students have been converted to being proficient in their English Language skills and the data shows if you begin in school in Morgan Hill you will be proficient in English before you graduate. Also attended Britton Open House and Rock the Mock at Live Oak. Trustee Gerard, reported he visited Los Paseos today and heard the 3 rd graders speak about American History. The students really knew a lot, I was very impressed. Attended the Chocolate & Wine for Valentine; spoke with a Live Oak Art teacher regarding bringing more career education to our schools. Also attended the State of the Valley meeting, in attendance were City leaders and Board members from other districts. Trustee Badillo - attended the Morgan Hill Chamber Science Fair, he thanked John Horner and Marilyn Liebers. Britton science club is having a fundraiser on Thursday at Sinaloa's to support the volcano kids. Trustee Benevento, reported on March 7, the Santa Clara County Board Association will hold their annual Legislative Luncheon at the Metro Ed Center in San Jose. E.6. Calendar: Upcoming events President Benevento read from the upcoming events and the Spring Open House schedule. F. CONSENT ITEMS F.1. Approve Personnel action to employ, re-employ, promote, reassign, accept resignation, accept retirement, and authorize related compensation F.2. Approve/Ratify contracts for Special Education Services for in the amount of $26,000 F.3. Adopt resolution to Adopt Criteria for Determining Order of Certificated Employee Seniority for Those Employees with the Same Date of First Paid Service in a Probationary Position Motion Passed: Approve as submitted passed with a motion by Ron Woolf and a second by Gino Borgioli. Certificated Recruitment Fairs for 2015 Update At this time, the Board reviewed and discussed items F-3 and F-15 on the Consent agenda G.8. 7 Public Comment by Community Member and Chamber Morgan Hill CBO, John Horner, Mr. Horner thanked the trustees and staff. This item has been discussed in the past and has been written with criticism in the Morgan Hill Times. This board oversees a huge budget and I encourage you to not do anything that would discourage any of the trustees from perusing any educational opportunities. I think that the time put into this has been excessive and I hope that you can come up with a policy tonight. Please support one another to get the education you need to fulfill your roles with the integrity and compassion you have. Presented by Board President Benevento This item will be brought back to the Board at a later date for further discussion G.9. New business: future agenda items / recognitions Trustee Gerard, would be interested in putting together a program package to present to philanthropists in Silicon Valley, so they could help financially with donations, etc. A program package would document the wonderful things we are doing and would help us to be competitive with other districts. Trustee Borgioli would like to put together a sub-committee. Trustee Borgioli, would like to recognize the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce Education Committee for their time and efforts to the students of our district. H. PUPIL DISCIPLINE H.1.
