2 about the union label What to look for in a Union Label Shop Number: Each Allied Council issues a number to each authorized company. Only the shop whose number appears to the right of the label may use that label. 00 Register Mark: The Allied Label is a registered trademark of the International Assiociation of Allied Printing Trades Councils and may only be used by companies who have a collective bargaining agreement with an Allied affiliate, and who are licensed and authorized to use the Allied Label. See page 6 for the rules governing the issuance and use of the Allied Label Council Name: the regional name of the the Allied Printing Trades Council which issued the Allied Label. The name of the council must be clearly legible for the label to be authentic. This is the label recognized by the AFL-CIO to indicate 100% UNION PRINTING WARNING! In this directory you will be able to find shops to fulfill every need throughout our Industry. As we come upon another election year, there will be plenty of union label printing opportunities available. Please make sure that you use one of the Companies listed in this directory to insure your printing is being handled by a true Union Label Print shop. There are plenty of Printers out there that will try and tell the print buyers that they can print the label but if they are not listed here in this directory, that Company does not have the authority to print the only Label that matters -- The Allied Union Label! If you are reading this, then you are definitely intending to do the right thing by utilizing a Union Printer. All the Employers listed in this directory have good union contracts that provide good wages and benefits for their employees. We are also asking for your assistance: as you see all of the printing out there, please look for our label and make sure it is legitimate. Take a look at the inside front cover, that is what a legitimate Allied Printing Trades Council Label looks like. If you see something that looks funny or wrong, please report it to us by calling: (800) We will follow up on each report, guaranteed. Every year this Council investigates companies who fraudulently pirate our label, and we use every legal course available to go after these companies or individuals violating our trademark. 10 8 label use rules Official Rules governing the issuance and use of the Allied Printing Trades Union Amended Label, April, 2000 Amended April, 2000 Note: Allied Printing Trades Union Labels may be issued only to qualified firms which have signed, without alteration or amendment, the Label License Agreement forms furnished by the Secretary of the International Allied Printing Trades Association. The License Agreement makes reference to Laws and Rules for label use. These are as follows as contained in the Constitution and By-Laws for Local Allied Printing Trades Councils: 1. The label of this council may be used only on work produced in its entirety by members of the International Printing Trades Unions comprising the International Allied Printing Trades Association pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement with an International Printing Trades Union, in offices authorized to use the label or in recognized union trade plants. 2. Except as may be specifically authorized by the Board of Governors of the International Allied Printing Trades Association, the label of this council, in either its original or reproduced form, may not be sent out of the geographical jurisdiction of this council for printing. 3. The label may be used on work received from a printing broker only if the shop doing the work bills the customer direct and delivers the job to such customer. 4. Any representative of the label committee of the Allied Printing Trades Council shall have access to offices using labels at any time during working hours. 5. No imprint shall be used in connection with the label other than number of the firm which is legally licensed for its use, and the Federal Trademark Registration symbol, i.e., shall be used and appear next to label. 6. No firm (or any employer authorized to use the label) will be allowed to make a charge for the use of the label on printing. 7. The label is to appear in its original form, free from rule work or ornamentation which tends to or disguises the union label. The label may be reduced in size or enlarged, but no reduction in size may be made which will render the label illegible. 8. Whenever the label is used, the shop label number assigned by this council or the firm imprint must appear. 9. Labels shall not be used by any firm other than the one named in the license. 10. The Allied Printing Trades Union Label shall not be issued to any firm unless there are a minimum of two (2) represented employees who shall not have a significant ownership interest. Firms currently authorized to use the Allied Label shall not lose the authorization as a result of this rule. 11. Badly worn labels are not to be used. 12. The label shall not be placed on work subcontracted by a label firm from a non-label firm. When a label firm subcontracts all or any portion of a job to another label office or offices, the label number of the firm contracting with the customer for the job is the label number to be used. 13. The use of the allied printing trades council label on any literature, card, picture or engraving of an obscene nature is strictly prohibited, and its appearance upon same shall be deemed sufficient cause for revocation of license. 14. All label work subcontracted from a label shop must be given only to authorized union establishments. 15. Firms must procure all labels from the Local Allied Printing Trades Council. 16. The Local Allied Printing Trades Council shall appoint an agent to represent the council in each establishment loaned the labels of the council, and the representative shall see that the labels are not wrongfully used or loaned. The representative shall deface the label on plates after the impressions are run off before these plates are taken from the firm. 17. No label license can be cancelled in any office until the aggrieved union has presented its grievance to the council in writing and the label committee has investigated such complaint and heard such evidence as may be presented by the union or unions interested and reported to the council. 18. On a violation of the terms under which the label is granted, the custodian of the label shall, after instruction by the council, remove all labels from the offending firm. 19. These rules may be altered or amended only by the Board of Governors of the International Allied Printing Trades Association. Furnished by the International Allied Printing Trades Association.
