3 The Demo Chat 2007 Page 4 September 2007 In Memory of Karen Marchioro Picture and Story from the State Party Website Washington State Democrats were deeply saddened by the passing of Karen Marchioro on August 30th. Upon hearing the news of Karen's passing, Washington State Democratic Party Chair Dwight Pelz issued the following statement: "All of us involved in Democratic politics in Washington State are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our dearest friends, Karen Marchioro. The Washington State Democratic Party would not exist as it does today were it not for Karen's 30 plus years of service. Her wisdom, cool demeanor and loyalty have been integral parts to both our state party, as well as our lives. Karen was a dear friend and she will be greatly missed. We send sincere condolences to Karen's entire family." Karen Marchioro first became involved in Democratic politics in the 1970s in East King County's 48th Legislative District. She later became chair of the King County Democrats and in 1981, Chair of the Washington State Democratic Party where she remained until As Chair of the Washington State Democrats, Karen was instrumental in drafting the charter of the state party. Without Karen's leadership, the party would never have attained the technological and financial security it maintains today. She has served as an elected member to the Democratic National Committee, and was the former DNC Western Regional Chair. Karen's lifetime achievements are best summarized by King County Democratic Chair Susan Sheary, who once said of Karen, "Before Washington State had Patty Murray, Maria Cantwell and Christine Gregoire, Washington State had Karen Marchioro." 5 The Demo Chat 2007 Page 2 September Annual Picnic Because the August meeting was the annual picnic, there are no meeting minutes in this month s DemoChat. Please enjoy these pictures from the picnic! Everyone at the 33 rd Legislative District joined together on Saturday, August 25, for the annual picnic, hosted this year at the home of Helen Kludt. Great fun and conversation was had by all, and great food consumed by the participants. One of the attendees of the picnic was our very own Senator Karen Keiser. Senator Keiser was happy to take a few minutes to address the crowd. Congressman Adam Smith also attended the picnic, and delighted the assembly with a few words. Karen s memorial was a strong reminder of how important the work we do is to reshape our communities and our country. Her dedication and passion is an inspiration for us all as we forge ahead to shape the next presidential election, help re-elect our fine governor and advocate for the things our communities need. Thank you for all you have done and all you will do for the party and for our country. We also held our first summer garden party it was lovely thank you! I want to give a special thank you to the wonderful Helen Kludt who opened up her beautiful home for our party. We had good weather for 90% of our gathering with the hearty Adam Smith holding his umbrella as he finished his speech and answered questions from the group. The event was a success due to so many members who attended worked hard to make it happen thank you! I want to thank the planning committee members for their work: Stu and Rita Creighton, Debbie Batchelor and Tim Clark. I also want to recognize Pete Peterson who set up our sound system; Cass Prindle who hauled in our chairs; Debbie Batchelor who coordinated the set up; Wendy Morgan who brought the lovely centerpieces; Bob Polsworth who set up and was available for transporting members; and others who came early or stayed late to help including Bailey Stober, Stu Creighton, Paulette Holcombe, Karen Moore, Bob Loeliger, Elizabeth Brant and to everyone who contributed, (there were so many people helping that I am sure I have missed many). Thanks, Tina Like Rats Leaving a Sinking Ship Have you noticed? During the past three years, a large number of resignations of government officials have occurred. Until recently, they were usually long-time government employees who were tired of Bush cronyism preventing them from doing their job, or big press resignations of high-ranking officials (such as John Ashcroft), due to public outcry. But in the past year, we ve seen a large number of resignations of Bush appointees in a very short period of time. Individuals who, in some cases, have been with Bush since he was the governor of Texas. This pattern kicked into high gear this year with the resignation of no less than seven Bush cronies in the span of four months. Almost two a month. Individuals such as Top White House aide Dan Bartlett; Attorney General Alberto Gonzales; and, of course, the stunning announcement of the resignation of Senior Advisor Karl Rove. What could have caused this sudden jump in resignations, all for personal reasons? I would propose that towards the middle of this year two events occurred that may have proved to Bush s people that he had lost support of the American people at large, and the Republican party in specific. In May, a Newsweek poll showed Bush having the lowest approval rating in the history of his administration (at 28%), and high-ranking Republicans took Bush to task for his handling of the war. Like rats leaving a sinking ship, these people, and others, recognize when a situation is lost. And they are getting out while the getting is good. What a pity that President George W.
