Under the Nominations Committee report it should be noted that Cindy Hochhalter and Mary Stiker are POSSIBLE nominees for 2011/2012 Treasurer. Jason stated the minutes are accepted as amended.
3 Minutes of the March19, 2010 Page Three AUDITORS Margaret Voyles/Mickey Carr Margaret reported that the East Central Chapter Books and 2009 State Books still need to be audited. Once all books have been audited, a report will be submitted to the Board. TREASURER S REPORT Sarah Jonker Sarah distributed the current budget report for March. Current March Budget Report The Operations (Checking) Account balance is $14, The Money Market/Equipment & Contingency Fund Account (minus COPED and Savings for COPED) balance is $21, Interest for COPED (which includes interest from $10,000, $1,000 donation, $4,000 from 2003 Fall Conference surplus, $ from 2004 Fall Conference silent auction, $1,215 donation from the 2007 budget, and $ from 2008 Fall Conference silent auction) is $1, The Savings Account balance is $ Jason stated the Treasurer s March Budget report will be filed subject to audit. Sarah also distributed the 2010 Budget Proposal. There was discussion. Lisa Harrison moved to accept the 2010 budget proposal as written pending final approval at the April meeting, it was seconded by Ed Norris and passed unanimously. COMMITTEE REPORTS AWARDS COMMITTEE Mark Mattox Award nomination applications are due July 15, C.O.P.E.D. COMMITTEE Todd Webb COPED amount available for Fall Conference is pending approval of 2010 budget proposal. INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR FOOD PROTECTION (IAFP) Kelli Whiting The 2010 IAFP AEC is August 1 to 4 in Anaheim, California. Kelli stated IEHA will need to provide a silent auction item. Susan Smith is our new contact at IAFP. N.E.H.A. LIAISON Jason Doerflein The 2010 NEHA AEC is June 7, 8 & 9, 2010 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Jason stated that IEHA will need to provide a silent auction item. MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE Margaret Voyles & Mike Sutton There are currently 286 paid active members, 11 sustaining members, 10 new members and 1 student.
4 Minutes of the March 19, 2010 Page Four NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE Mike Sutton & Margaret Voyles Margaret reported the following nominees: Travis Goodman for Vice President; Mickey Carr for Auditor; Kelli Whiting for Secretary; and Cindy Hochhalter and Mary Stiker as possible nominees for Treasurer. We need another nominee for Auditor. Nominations will be accepted from the floor at the Spring Conference business meeting. LEGISLATIVE LIAISON David Lamm Dave reported on SB 356 which deletes REHS as a regulated occupation. There was discussion on what you need to do to get your REHS transferred (reciprocity) to NEHA will have one year to get this done. Go to NEHA website for additional information. This is effective July 1 st. There was discussion about putting information in the Journal or on the website. Margaret Voyles will pull together some information for posting, ing, and/or printing. PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE Kelli Whiting for Sandra Parks Kelli reported that Sandra would like all Committees to submit a brief summary of what they re working on and/or have accomplished. Kelli distributed the Spring Journal draft to put names w/photos from the Fall Conference. FOOD PROTECTION COMMITTEE Stephanie Cain & Sharon Breckenridge Co-Chairs The last meeting was March 12 th at the ISDH building. Dr. Barbara Almanza, Purdue University, presented the results of a survey from her graduate student Jin that was conducted with the attendees of the Food Protection Committee in November. Scott Gilliam, ISDH Food Protection, provided ISDH updates. The Model Food Ordinance was approved by the Committee. It will be posted on the website in both Word and PDF versions. The next meeting is scheduled for May 14 th at the ISDH building. GENERAL ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SERVICES COMMITTEE Jason Ravenscroft At the last meeting there was discussion on an IDEM policy document regarding waste tire burning and the IDEM rule in progress for home wood burning boilers. The next meeting is scheduled for May 13 th at the ISDH Shadeland office. Call-in lines are available. WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE Denise Wright The Committee is continuing work on the On-site Sewage System Operating Permit and Maintenance Model Ordinance. The next meeting is scheduled for April 8 th at the IDEM Shadeland office. A call-in line is available The Committee is working on Fall Conference speakers. There will be a public hearing on the on-site sewage disposal rule on April 12 th. TERRORISM AND ALL-HAZARDS PREPAREDNESS COMMITTEE Sarah Jonker for Travis Goodman The last meeting was February 25 th. The next meeting is scheduled for April 22 nd at 10:00 am at the IDEM Shadeland office. A call-in line is available The Committee still needs appointees from the Southern and Northeast Chapters.
5 Minutes of the March 19, 2010 Page Five I.P.H.A. LIAISON Josh Williams Josh reported that the Public Health Week Conference is scheduled for April 6 & 7 at the IUPUI Campus Center. He distributed a brochure and stated that Dr. Larkin will attend the LHD Manager s Association meeting on April 6 th from 1:00 to 1:30 pm. The next IPHA Board meeting is scheduled for April 22 nd. IPHA will staff the new Center for Public Health Practice and Research until they get up and running. IU DEPT. OF PUBLIC HEALTH-OFFICE OF PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICE (formerly MID- AMERICA PUBLIC HEALTH TRAINING CENTER (MAPHTC) LIAISON Kate Nicholson NO REPORT I.D.E.M. LIAISON Catherine Hess Catherine distributed information on IDEM s updated website in regard to public notices. You can subscribe for certain regions and be notified of public notices in your area. There will be a public hearing on April 14 th on the rules for illegal drug lab cleanup. IOWPA LIAISON submitted by Dick Blazer IOWPA has openings available for the septic inspector training on March 22 nd and 23 rd in Wabash, Indiana. IOWPA provided speakers at the Vanderburgh County and Brown County septic installers meetings. If other counties need speakers, please contact Donna at IOWPA is looking for a site in southern Indiana to install a septic system this summer for a field day. BOAH LIAISON Dr. James Hollis Dr. Hollis reported that the TB in deer and cattle herds is now winding down. The Breeders and Brokers Laws went into effect on January 1, BOAH is moving as of March 26 th. Starting March 29 th they will be at their new location at 4154 North Keystone Avenue, Indianapolis The new phone number is and the new fax number is I.S.D.H. LIAISON Mary Stiker NO REPORT IN TIME (Indiana s Traffic Incident Management Effort) LIAISON Jason Doerflein for Jeff Larmore (Background for this Liaison position - Jason Doerflein reported that the Quick Clearance Project (now referred to as IN TIME) has requested a representative from the Association. The focus of this group is to determine how best to clean up accidents, spills, etc. to get traffic moving again. Jason suggested that the Association appoint Jeff Larmore, Marion County Health Department, to this group. Jeff has been attending the meetings from the inception. Jason Doerflein moved that the Association appoint Jeff to be the IEHA rep to this group, it was seconded by Ginger Vargas and passed unanimously). There will be a conference on June 22 nd at the Marriott at 21 st and Shadeland to provide some hands-on training for inspectors. Go to for additional information.
6 Minutes of the March19, 2010 Page Six 2009 FALL CONFERENCE Margaret Voyles Margaret reported a surplus of $2, There are 2 requested refunds in process SPRING CONFERENCE Josh Williams Josh reported that the Spring Conference is scheduled for April 14, 2010 at the Ball State University Alumni Center. The registration packets were mailed, along with the COPED information FALL CONFERENCE Adam Rickert Adam reported that the Fall Conference is scheduled for September 27, 28 & 29, 2010 at the Brown County State Park. The entire lodge has been booked and there will be various cabin packages available. The room rate is $89 + tax per night. The theme is Sustainable Environmental Health through Engaging the Public. There will be a Save-the-Date card in the Spring Conference folders and on the website. Adam reported that the park will charge one night s stay immediately when you make your reservation FALL CONFERENCE Joshua Williams Josh reported he is looking at the Potawatomi Inn in Steuben County he has a contract to review. OLD BUSINESS Margaret Voyles requested 2 self-inking stamps one For Deposit Only for the Fall Conference checks and one Or Current Resident for the bulk mail envelopes. Lisa Harrison moved for approval to purchase the stamps, it was seconded by Ed Norris and passed unanimously. Update: The stamps have been received. NEW BUSINESS Tami reported that by using our new Non-Profit Bulk Mail status we saved $36 on the last mailing. CHAPTER REPORTS All Chapter Reports should be submitted to the Secretary in writing. SOUTHEASTERN CHAPTER submitted by Todd Webb The last meeting was February 26 th at the Golden Corral in Clarksville. Jim Ignaut, ISDH and Amir Mousavi, Assistant Fire Chief and Instructor at IU Southeast spoke about H1N1 and homeland security issues, respectively. There were approximately 20 members present. The next meeting date is TBA. SOUTHERN CHAPTER submitted by Jennifer Rekers/John Kennard The last meeting was March 9 th at the Stolls Restaurant in Loogootee. The next meeting is scheduled for May 11 th at the Overlook Restaurant in Leavenworth.
7 Minutes of the March 19, 2010 Page Seven NORTHWEST CHAPTER submitted by Rita Hooton The last meeting was March 18 th in Plymouth. There was a tour of the Aero-Tech Aerobic Wastewater Treatment System Plant, which is an extended aeration, activated sludge process. The business meeting and lunch was at Beef OBrady s. There were approximately 14 members in attendance. The next meeting is scheduled for May 13 th at the Albanse Candy Factory in Lake County. NORTHEAST CHAPTER submitted by Patrick Sovinski The last meeting was March 18 th in LaGrange County. The speakers were Dennis Rainsberger, Wana Waves Water Park & Resort and Craig Chivers, LaGrange County Environmentalist. Dennis spoke about the water park and Craig spoke about roadside stands food safety issues. The next meeting is scheduled for April 15 th in Whitley County. EAST CENTRAL CHAPTER submitted by Stephanie Cain The last meeting was February 25 th at the Red Lobster in Anderson. Kristine Bozovich representing Sanjamar gave a presentation on new and improved products in the food safety industry. The next meeting is scheduled for March 25 th in Shelby County. The location and topics are TBA. WEST CENTRAL CHAPTER submitted by Lisa Harrison The last meeting was February 11 th with a tour of the Prairie Creek Maple Syrup Operation. There were approximately 15 in attendance. WABASH VALLEY CHAPTER submitted by Ed Norris The last meeting was February 4 th at the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds in Lafayette. The speaker was Ameet Tyrewala, a PhD student at Purdue. His topic was a research study he had conducted to determine how quickly the temperature will rise inside a commercial reach-in refrigerator when power is lost. He collected data under varying conditions of storage and usage. There were 24 members and guests in attendance. The next meeting is scheduled for April 1 st on the Purdue University campus details TBA. CENTRAL CHAPTER submitted by Amber Collins The last meeting was March 18 th at Dawson s in Speedway. The speaker was from Ecolab pest control. The next meeting is scheduled for May there will be a speaker from Steritech. Jason entertained a motion to adjourn the meeting. Ed Norris moved that the meeting be adjourned, it was seconded by Todd Webb and passed unanimously. The meeting adjourned at 12:05 pm.
