1 The Ninety-Nines Southwest Section Spring Meeting Business Meeting Minutes April 29, 2017 Bay Cities The Spring Southwest Section Meeting was called to order by Governor, Alice Talnack (Monterey Bay Chapter) on April 29, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. Alice led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. The meeting Rules were explained and timers announced. Timers are Dea Payette & Elaine LeCain both of the Bakersfield Chapter. Acceptance of Agenda was moved by Joanne Nissen(Monterey Bay Chapter) Alice gave a brief history of Bay Cities Chapter noting they were chartered on March 2, 1932 and this is their 85 th Anniversary year. The chapter has given seven governors to the Southwest Section. Introduction of Board : Governor, Alice Talnack introduced the Board members present: Vice- Governor, Jeanne Fenimore (San Fernando Valley Chapter); Secretary, Michaele Serasio (Monterey Bay Chapter); Director, Lynn Meadows (Reno High Sierra Chapter); Director, Paula Sandling (San Fernando Valley Chapter); Past Governor and International Treasurer, Barbara Crooker ( Mt. Shasta Chapter); members of the Nominating Committee: Chair, Pat Chan (Bay Cities Chapter); Barbara Boot (Mt. Shasta Chapter); Elaine LeCain (Bakersfield Chapter); Catherine Browning-Santa Maria (San Joaquin Chapter) Memorial to New Horizons: Linda Mae Hivert (Reno Area Chapter) honored those who have gone onto new horizons with a quote from the Director David Ledesma of the Johnson Space Center followed by a moment of silence. Roll Call of Delegates: Michaele Serasio took roll and announced 85 delegates from 22 chapters present and confirmed a quorum. Spring 2017 Southwest Section Meeting Readers: Michaele Serasio announced the committee to read the minutes from this meeting: Alanna McClellan (Lake Tahoe Chapter), Catherine Browning-Santa Maria (San Joaquin Chapter) and Kathy Walton (Reno Area Chapter) Vice Governor, Jeanne Fenimore (San Fernando Valley Chapter) introduced former Governors, Past Presidents, International officers and Guests. She also acknowledged those who flew their own planes and first time attendees. Minutes of Fall 2016 Business Meeting Antelope Valley : Secretary Serasio read the minutes of the Fall Business meeting held on September 24, 2016 in Lancaster, CA. Dorothy Norkus (San Diego Chapter) Moved to approve the minutes. Elaine LeCain (Bakersfield) seconded. The motion was carried. Governors Report: Governor Alice Talnack summarized her activities as Governor since the fall. She has attended both International Board meetings in Oklahoma City, visited 4 chapters

2 including Aloha chapter. She has helped with the planning of Winter Workshop, Spring Section Meeting and the International Conference in SWS Scam: Governor Talnack reported the Section was scammed an amount of $ on March 7, When money was wired to the Sun Trust Bank of Florida. A police report was filed within 24 hours; Jan McKenzie (President) notified to alert to other Governors/Chapter Chairs; Cecile Hatfield (99s legal council) has been contacted and advising how to proceed; what questions to ask. Alice encouraged Chapter Chairs to watch their s and finances. Alice would like to contact/write a letter to William H. Rogers Jr. CEO of Sun Trust Bank to ask about a donation of $ or more. This CEO of the Sun Trust bank has a philanthropic history. There was a discussion on how these kinds of scams are done with suggestions on how Alice can proceed. SWS Gold Stars: Alice presented Gold Stars to thank the following for their services to the Section: Paula Sandling & Jeanne Fenimore for getting SWS memorabilia in Texas and bringing back to California. Eline Kok-Vermulen (San Diego Chapter) Web Mistress of the SWS website and Claudia Contreras (Monterey Bay) Co-Webmistress. Treasurers Report Current and adoption of Proposed Budget : A. Talnack on behalf of Felicia Hoppe (Sutter Buttes Chapter) presented the current Treasurer s report noting unexpected costs of $ as scam and $ deposit to the Queen Mary for 2020 International Conference. There was a discussion about how the seed money for a Section Meeting is allocated. Cathy Prudhomme (International) and Barbara Crooker (International) explained how International uses its allocated seed money. Proposed Budget : Governor Talnack presented the proposed budget as prepared by the treasurer. The budget is on file with these minutes. After discussion of fine points, Pat Forbes (Santa Clara Chapter) moved to approve the proposed budget. Wendy O Malley (Bay Cities) seconded and the motion was carried. Break 20 minutes Vice-Governors Report: Vice Governor, Jeanne Fenimore reported on her activities and future meetings. The International Conference is July th in San Antonio, Texas; Fall Section Meeting is September 28-October 1 st hosted by the Mt Shasta/Redwood Coast Chapter in Redding. Next we have Spring Section Meeting of 2018 hosted by the Bakersfield Chapter April 26-29, 2018 The Sheraton is the Conference Hotel. And the Fall Section Meeting of 2018 will be hosted by the San Gabriel Chapter Uncontrolled Experience A possible joint Section with the Northwest Section could be in the plans. Jeanne summarized preliminary plans for the International Conference at the Queen Mary in Long Beach in July 2020.

3 International Report: Cathy Prudhomme, International Director discussed the 2017 International Conference in San Antonio. The host hotel is full, however, Travel Planners is working on securing more rooms close by. There is a new section on the website with a focus on recruitment and retention of membership. There is also a new Facebook page for 99s. International has embarked on a 3 pronged approach to Advertising in Digital Aviation Magazines for recruitment even having a link to the Membership page and numbers have increased. Memberships is about 5000 members. New membership brochures are available at headquarters. Poster size on the website that Chapters can download. Don t forget Friends of the 99s which is a vehicle for friends of 99s to support 99s. Cost: $50.00 per year and can be given as a gift. The 99s have attended many tradeshows and Oshkosh. At the WIA tradeshow we picked up 44 new members. The Karen Johnson solo scholarship now in process. Deadline: July 1, The Trusts are in good shape and Museums (AE Birthplace Museum and Museum of Women Pilots). Cathy appreciates SWS support. At the International BOD meeting in Oklahoma City on March 24, 2017 they worked on a Strategic Plan to maintain membership and maintaining & growing services to members as a high priority. International & SWS Report Bylaws & Standing Rules Proposals: Pat Prentiss (Orange County) on behalf of her committee: Pat Gregory (Santa Clara Valley), Donna Crane-Bailey (Monterey Bay) and Betty Bucci (Santa Clara Valley) presented the proposed changes to the By- Laws and Standing Rules. These changes were sent to all chapters in a timely manner and copies were given to those who needed them during the meeting. Pat explained the bulk of changes are to bring the Southwest Section in agreement with International By-Laws and Standing Rules for voting by electronic ballot. She also explained how Chapters need to change their By-Laws and Standing Rules if they use electronic voting. In the Standing Rules the Spring Southwest Section meeting will become the Annual Meeting of the corporation. Kathy Walton (Reno Area Chapter) moved to approve the proposed changes to the Southwest Section By-Laws and Standing Rules, inclusive of grammar changes made from the floor be adopted. Catherine Browning Santa-Maria (San Joaquin Valley Chapter) seconded motion. The motion was approved. Forest of Friendship: Alanna McClellan (Lake Tahoe Chapter) reported the 41 st Anniversary of the Forest of Friendship is June 16 & 17, 2017 in Atchison, Kansas. Over 1400 men and women have been honored with plaques in the Forest. The website has all the information about how to sponsor someone. Chapter Reports: The following chapters gave reports on their activities: Lake Tahoe, Antelope Valley, Bay Cities and Bakersfield. The reports are on file with the Section Secretary.

4 Museum of Women Pilots: Barbara Schultz showed a video about the Museum while she shared information about displays. Money is needed to buy a mannequin and display cases. There will be an exhibit at Will Rogers Airport this summer to celebrate the 80 th anniversary of AE s last flight. Chapter Reports: The following chapters gave reports on their activities: Marin County, Mt. Shasta, Redwood Coast Flyers, Reno Area, Monterey Bay, Orange County, Palomar, Reno High Sierra. The reports are on file with the Section Secretary. AE Scholarship Report: Kellie O Dea (Bay Cities Chapter) announced the Southwest Section has five members who have been awarded an AE Scholarship this year. Fly Now Scholarships have been awarded in the amount of 314, Watch the Southwesterly for more information or contact Lori Parker and Ceci Stratford for more information Chapter Reports: The following chapters gave reports on their activities: Sacramento Valley, San Fernando Valley, Sutter Buttes, Santa Clara Valley, Santa Maria Valley, San Joaquin Valley, San Diego, San Gabriel Valley. The reports are on file with the Section Secretary. NIFA Report: Virginia Harmer (San Gabriel Valley) reported on NIFA events. The Region II event was held at Reid-Hillview in San Jose November 15-19, She thanked all of the 99s who helped judge the event. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, San Jose State University and San Diego Christian College will be representing Region II at National NIFA. The National Competition will be hosted by The Ohio University in Columbus, Ohio May 9-16, Judges are needed at the National Event as well as the Regionals. Our Regional will be held in the fall. Virginia will have the dates after the NIFA National Competition. Go to the NIFA website at for information on the National Competition in May. Endowment Fund: Trustee Virginia Harmer(San Gabriel Valley) reported on the Endowment Fund. She noted Carol Andrews of Sutter Buttes Chapter is also a Trustee. All donations are recognized on a wall at 99s Museum and you can make automatic monthly donations. If you wish more information contact Virginia Harmer. Unfinished Business : It was announced the Cathe Fish seminar today is for IFR interested attendees. Thank you to Meeting Organizers: Bay Cities Chapter!!! Jeanne Fenimore extended a thank you to the gals from Invitation to Fall 2017 Section Meeting Redding CA: Members of the Mt. Shasta and Redwood Coast chapters extended an invitation to the September 28- October 1, 2017 Section Meeting in Redding. Information is on the SWS99s website to register.
