2 Continuing the Journey from the President: Welcome to fall in Arkansas! The kids are in school and the cooler temperatures are slowly drifting southward through our state. Now we have more time to work on our chapter projects. September was a busy month for Kappa State preparing for our annual fall meeting. If you were not able to attend our Kappa State Fall Meeting, you missed so much! Linda Hollingsworth, Mississippi State President, gave an inspiring and motivating speech at our luncheon about the can do spirit of Delta Kappa Gamma members. The breakout sessions were informative and helpful with teaching and our daily lives. The Education Foundation Committee had a beautiful crib size quilt to raffle, along with the Broken China vendor who raffled two pendants for Leadership Development. A generous amount was also collected for the Emergency Fund! We are very fortunate that our Kappa State members have a heart for giving! As I mentioned earlier, now is the time to work on our chapter projects. Many of you raise money for local scholarships and grants, along with giving to worthy organizations that give assistance to women and children. I applaud your efforts in these areas and in the work of other on-going chapter projects. We are looking forward to our Kappa State Convention, June 7-9, We are working on changes in our state By-laws and Standing Rules that will coordinate with the changes voted on at International last July in Austin, TX. A few of the changes are as follows: 1. Wording change from initiation to induction, 2. Inclusion of collegiate members, 3. Possible use of geographic name for chapters and state, 4. Date of DKG year from July 1 to June 30, would mean a change in the date of payment for annual dues. Please be thinking about what you would like to accomplish this year as a Kappa State member. Always continue to support your chapter and spread the good news about the work Delta Kappa Gamma is doing to better the lives of women educators not only in the United States, but worldwide! Kappa State President Joy Graham is shown with Angela Caldwell, Kappa. Angela recently received her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas. 2 Linda Hollingsworth, Mississippi State President, shown with Kappa State President Joy Graham, was the keynote speaker for the Fall Meeting. Above center, Beta Sigma Co-presidents Linda McGarrah and Patti Inman are shown with Kappa State President Joy Graham. Left, Cathy Long, Joy Graham and Cissie Pendergrass display the quilt made by Joy to raffle during the meeting to raise money.

6 Kappa State Rules Chairman Elizabeth Waldrip shares with members at the KS Fall Meeting how some of the changes from the International Constitutional Convention in July will affect Kappa State. A Thank You Letter September 26, 2018 Dear Joy and Kappa State Members, The Arkansas Fall Meeting was exceptional from start to finish! The organization and planning were so evident and those involved were excited to be part of this special time! When I arrived, I was met by wonderful members helping me unload all of my stuff and getting me inside the building from the rain...it may have been a gloomy day on the outside but the inside was full of sunshine, happiness, and hugs! I was immediately glad to have been asked to be part of this special meeting! Kappa State members are to be congratulated on the smooth running of the meeting s general sessions, the variety and number of breakout sessions, the wonderful luncheon and the kind expression of love for one of your own in the Ella Reese Pinning Ceremony...something to be proud of for sure! I am deeply grateful for your kind welcome to me and your attention as I spoke about the Can Do Spirit that I believe is found in each one of us! Arkansas state members have that attitude in all that I heard about during your committee reports and your Education Foundation work! You are all amazing and I am so proud to have been a part of the Fall Meeting! I will never forget your kindness! The beautiful Sea La Vie Necklace that was presented to me will be a wonderful remembrance of this special time! It is called the Hey Ya ll necklace and suits me perfectly. I love the saying that I found in the box with the necklace... Like sweet tea and a smile, grace and charm never go outta style. Wear this necklace and remember no matter where you butter your biscuit, ya ll are Southern at heart! Thank you for this beautiful gift! 6 It is Time for Needed Changes to be Made to Kappa State Governing Documents The 2018 International Convention of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International in Austin, Texas, was a constitutional convention. There were approximately 120 changes that were considered. The final wording of the adopted proposals has been published. Many of the changes only affect International documents but some do cause changes in state and chapter documents. Some of the results of the voting include: (1) Our name is still The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, also referred to as The Society or DKG; (2) State organizations have the option of using Greek name or geographic name; (3) State organizations may name chapters using Greek name and/or geographic name; (4) New members will be inducted rather than initiated. A new inductee becomes a member when her dues are paid; (5) A new level of membership, Collegiate, will be open to pre-service education students; (6) During the fiscal year dues will continue to be due by October 31, 2018, with members being dropped for non-payment as of November 1, For the fiscal year, and following, dues must be paid by June 30 (beginning in 2019). Non-paid members will be dropped as of October 1; (7) Items that do not involve business of The Society, such as emblems, anthem, and jewelry, will be relocated to International Go-To Guide or state organization appendix. At the Fall Meeting 2018 two chapters were dissolved and one chapter merged with another. The Kappa State Achievement Award was changed to The Carolyn Pittman Achievement Award. Six of our state $500 scholarships were combined to form three $1000 scholarships. The Claire T. White Scholarship is only awarded when funds are available. The changes made by International will be worked into Kappa State Bylaws and Standing Rules without vote. Changes that give us options on the state level will need to be proposed for the Kappa State Convention International changes and changes adopted during Fall Meeting 2018 have already been inserted into the state documents which now appear on the website with the designation draft. These will not be final until after our state convention. Proposals for other changes may be submitted by any member as well as the Rules Committee. The format of the proposals needs to include Location of the present item, Currently Reads, Amended as Follows (including financial impact, if any), and If Adopted Will Read. Proposals must be sent by February 15, 2019, to Elizabeth Waldrip, waldripsewngo@earthlink.net or to 2726 Millbrook Dr., Benton, AR Makers of proposals rejected by the committee will be notified by March 1, Elizabeth Waldrip Kappa State Rules Committee Chair Joy, you indeed have so much to be proud of in the Kappa State members, what all of you stand for and accomplish as you work together! Kappa State...what a beautiful Jewel you have in your President! I treasure her friendship and am proud she serves with me in the Southeast Region! I want to wish each one of you a wonderful year in your chapter and state work as you Continue On! I look forward to possibly seeing you at your State Convention in June and in Asheville! I love making lifelong friends and now that we have met...i will be looking forward to seeing you again! Thank you all! Blessings, Linda Hollingsworth, Pi President Zeta State Mississippi State Organization Face Our Challenges and Celebrate the Can Do Spirit of DKG!

7 This App s For You There are two types of people in this world; those who love apps and those who don t. However, no matter what sort of person you are, I promise you will love this one. Delta Kappa Gamma now has an app called (wait for it) DKG! This app was created through a new company, Gather Digital, and will completely replace the old one. There are two parts in the app which serve different purposes: Part 1: 365- This part gives members basic information, news, updates, etc., that would normally be found on the International website, but in a format more accessible than the website on portable devices. It will be relevant and up to date year round, and only available to members. As a chapter president, I find this a much quicker way to keep up with deadlines. Part 2: Conventions- This part will serve as a reference tool to members for DKG conventions and, ultimately, for conferences. It will include maps, schedules, speakers, discussion boards, etc., to help members feel more connected and informed on events, whether they are in attendance or not. This tool was really convenient at the DKG International Convention in Austin this summer. I really liked using this app at International this summer. I can t ever seem to keep up with that big program booklet and all the stuff I circled to attend. This let me star a breakout session and add it to my schedule. Each day I pulled up my schedule and knew when and where I was supposed to be. Download and Login Instructions: The app is free to download and password protected. Once you have accessed the app, you will be prompted to log in. Please use the that the DKG has on file for you, then push the Password button. You ll receive an walking you through how to establish the password of your choice. Once completed, log in to the app with your address and new password and explore! Navigate using the menu button (3 horizontal lines) in the upper left corner. Parts of this article where taken from the DKG International website. As always, if you have a tech question you need help with, please me. heatherdunn@sheridanschools.org Technology Chairman, Heather Dunn (This is how the app appears in the app store.) Chi Chapter At a September meeting Chi Chapter welcomed a transfer member from Louisiana. Dr. Stacy Potter (center) is shown with her sponsors, Leisa Phillips and Candi Martin. Two new members were welcomed to Chi Chapter on September 6th. Shown from left to right are Sponsor Paige Hurd, and Inductee Hannah Rosson; Inductee Debbie Martin, and Sponsor Tammie Stahler. From Kappa State Treasurer Linda Vailes: Chapter presidents should be helping their treasurers collect dues for the upcoming chapter deadline on October 31, Dues for International and State should be sent by November 10, Linda stresses that chapter treasurers must file their 990N form by November 15. Linda Vailes: phone, ; , linda5662@windstream.net 7 Introducing Chi Chapter s theme for the Back to the Future are 2nd Vice President Jenny Hodge, Treasurer Tammy Ward, President Leisa Phillips, and Secretary Paige Hurd.

8 Kappa State Needs You! Do you have a heart for serving others? Kappa State needs you! Many rewarding experiences await those who choose to serve DKG as a Kappa State Officer or a Trustee for the Kappa State Education Foundation Board. The KS Nominations Committee is ready to receive nominations for President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, and Secretary as well as two (2) members for the Education Foundation Board of Trustees. The qualifications for Kappa State Officers are found in the Kappa State Standing Rules: A nominee for state organization president should have served as chapter president and have had state organization committee experience. Nominees for other offices should have served as chapter officers and/ or state committee chairs. The first and second vice-presidents do not automatically advance to the presidency. The qualifications for the Kappa State Education Foundation Board of Trustees include a member (a) having good standing in Kappa State Organization for at least eight (8) years; (b) having served a term as chapter president, (c) having served as a state officer or state committee chairman, and (d) having a thorough knowledge and intent to carry out The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International s purposes and policies. These two positions will be elected by secret ballot by the Kappa State Executive Board at the 2019 Kappa State Convention. Trustees serve for a six-year term. Now is the time to encourage members with a heart for service by nominating them (with their permission!) for one of these positions. It is a wonderful opportunity for leadership and friendship. You will find the nomination forms for these positions on the Kappa State website under the Forms tab. Please be sure to get approval from the person you wish to nominate. The deadline for submitting nominations is January 15, Please contact Karen Roe, Kappa State Nominations Committee Chair, at karenroe79@gmail.com if you have any questions.
