1 THE SIXTY-THIRD STUDENT SENATE The Journal: May 18, 2011 The meeting of the 63rd Student Senate was called to order at 7:33 p.m. by Student Senate President Chance. Senator Harris led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. Moment of Silent Reflection: MEMBERS PRESENT (First Roll Call): Senators Cox, Bascumbe, Bauman, Fairbanks, Feuer, Figueroa, Gadsden, Georges, Guerrier, Harris, Hernandez, Isbel, Mechoullam, Penn, Smith, Swift, Thomas, Virgin, Williams. MEMBERS ABSENT: (First Roll Call): Senator Jackson, Taylor, Weru, Zonfrelli. MEMBERS TARDY/LATE (First Roll Call): (8:12), Sharpe (7:45). Senators Daniels (8:08), Perez There was a motion to unlock the Calendar and move into Rules and Calendar Committee of the Whole to interview candidates for Senate: the motion passed. The students were interviewed and passed for Senate allowing Senate to have the needed enrollment of thirty Senators to conduct summer Senate session. Interviewed and passed without objection were: Samantha James for Business Seat 1, Joery Francois for Arts and Sciences Seat 4, Kyle Dunnington for Social Sciences Seat 4, Jordan Raupp for Graduate Studies Seat 7 and Erik Dettenmayer for Arts and Sciences Seat 6. The Senate obtained quorum after the swearing of the new Senators. Corrections: None. Student Comments: David Olawale a graduate student and resident of Alumni Village told the Senate of the terrible living conditions and safety issues they face each day and a solution to the problem needs to practical and cost effective. He said the fences surrounding the complex are torn down and this exposes a risk to the students living there. He also said that getting to the main campus is a problem. Special Introductions and Announcements: None. Messages from the Executive Branch: Reuben Stokes, Chief of Staff, asked the Senate to support the candidates that are coming up tonight for confirmation. He said that Senate s participation is needed for Orientation. Student Body President Avi Assidon informed the Senate that the Student Body Treasurer Dayron Silverio had to resign because of family issues, and he appointed Dayana Bernavil as the acting treasurer. He told the Senate that they are working on The Torch and expanding it to represent all areas of SGA. He asked the Senate to
2 read the veto message concerning Bill 29, that was passed out last week. Assidon asked the Senate to take a stand on issues going on at Alumni Village concerning safety and transportation. He said the international and graduate students live in Alumni Village and we need to make sure they have the things they need, so please support Resolution 40. He explained to the Senate how the Nole Cab works, saying that the hours are 10 p.m. until 4 a.m., and it costs $4 for the ride, which is the flat rate, and not $4 for each person in the cab. He said the cab will not take you from bar to bar, but it will take from the bar to your house/apartment. He introduced COGS new speaker Dominick Ardis. Messages from Agency and Bureau Directors, SGA Organizations Officers and Employees: Frank Jaffe, Pride Student Union Director, told the Senate that the Pride Center is like a home away from home so come by and check it out. Rachel Walsh told the Senate that she is the acting director of CPE and said that she turned in her application last semester and hopes to be interviewed soon for the director s position. She said the CPE s mission is part of the free university movement and they have classes that are organized democratically. She said they will table every week during Orientation. Messages from the Congress of Graduate Students: Dominick Ardis, newly elected COGS Speaker introduced himself to the Senate. He told the Senate that they are rebuilding and reformatting their mission and purpose. He asked the Senate to please get involved with Alumni Village movement and FSU needs to continue to recruit and retain graduate and international students. His address if dardis@fsu.edu. Messages from the Judicial Branch: None. Messages from the Union Board: None. Messages from the Senior Class Council: None. Messages from the Campus Recreation Board: None. Report of the Student Body Auditor: As of May 18, Senate Projects is $63, Remaining balances: RTAC is $0 and PAC is $0. Report of Committees: Student Affairs - Got Issues will table tomorrow at Seminole Discovery from a.m. Budget - Did not meet. Internal Affairs - The following were interviewed and passed without objection: Gerado Cruz for Press Secretary, Chelsea Tombley for Secretary of Internal Affairs, Jillian Tapper for

4 Bill 53 Sponsored by Senator Sharpe. A revision of $ within the Black Student Union from Expense to Food. Purpose: to provide food for the BSU s Week in the summer. REFERRED TO FINANCE. Bills Second Reading: Bill 41 Sponsored by Senators Figueroa and Hernandez. A revision of $352 within the Pride Student Union from OPS Wages to Expense. Purpose: to purchase new furniture for the office. PASSED WITHOUT OBJECTION. Bill 42 Sponsored by Senators Hernandez and Figueroa. A revision of $ within the Pride Student Union from Clothing and Awards to Expense. Purpose: to pay for improvements to the LGBTQ Student Resource Center. PASSED WITH ONE OBJECTION. Constitutional Amendments: None. Resolutions: Resolution 39 - Sponsored by Senators Bascumbe and Figueroa. Subject: Allowing WVFS V89 to hold their event, Good Ole Fashioned Summer Rock Show at the Engine Room on June 25, PASSED WITHOUT OBJECTION. Resolution 40 - Sponsored by Senator Sharpe. Subject: In support of creating a safe, productive and pleasant community at the FSU Alumni Village. WITHDRAWN BY SPONSOR. Unfinished Business: None. New Business: None. Closing Announcements: Senator Georges announced that Alpha Phi Alpha Inc. is having a car wash on Saturday at Pep Boys. Senator Raupp announced that the World Affairs Program held a banquet at the end of the Spring semester. He also announced that FSU President Barron gave them $25,000 for their program and $175,000 for a 5 year period. He said they will still require SGA funds in order to function. Vicki Dobiyanski told the Senate to be a good host to students walking around the campus for Orientation. She informed the Senate that she will be out of the country until May 31. Senate Pro Tempore Thomas congratulated the new Senators. He said the Senate will have a table on June 18 at the CARE Orientation and to see him if you are interested in helping out. Senate President Chance said the Senate may not meet every week during the summer so look for an to that effect.
