Winter 2015 Psi State News 5 Membership Has Perks! Membership is the heart of DKG. A tiny crack appears in our heart each time a chapter or individual member decides to drop out of DKG. It saddens us all to hear about a chapter giving up. It really makes me sad when individual members decide not to renew their membership. I see in my own chapter ladies making this decision with the main reason being of too busy with other stuff. If our hearts were in it I believe we could find time 4 to 6 times out of 365 days to meet. Ladies, it is where we place our priorities. I say all of this to say, Please rethink your choices of being a member. Our heart can take only so much before that crack becomes a crevice and then a canyon. Psi State needs each of you to be strong. Together we can move mountains. As we begin to see the end of this biennium and with convention right around the corner, think about the membership challenges that were set for you. The Order of the Rose challenge is to maintain your membership in the biennium. Setting the Gold Standard Award has many parts to master its challenge. Reread them and work on any that you have not done. We will be requesting chapters begin submitting this information in February. The Membership Committee has focused on celebrating years in DKG. What a blessing when celebrating the 50 plus years to talk to members who have retained their membership for so long. Four lovely ladies were able to attend the celebration. We then celebrated 35 years. While my intent was not to do certificates because of the number of ladies, I did. My apologies to those that had errors or that I missed. Due to multiple computer problems, I did not get these certificates out to many. I plan to these to district directors and let them out the form so each president can print and give out to their members. In February, we will be celebrating, 20 plus years in DKG. While I am not going to print certificates, the certificate used previously can be used by changing the date and number of years. As I stated earlier, convention is right around the corner and we must begin to prepare for the memorial service. Chapter presidents, we need a picture for the memorial service of those that have passed away during the biennium. The format can be digital or a hard copy. It is important that their name and chapter be attached with the picture. This is a special time to remember our DKG sisters who have passed away and we want each one represented. Along with any ending comes reports. Please download your end of the year necrology report, complete it and send to Judy Scarboro at jjscarboro@bellsouth.net. It has been an honor serving as chair of the membership committee and with the ladies on the committee. They are hard working and ready to step forward and do what is necessary. Submit Your Scrapbooks! The deadline for the last two pages for the Scrapbook was due January 15, The two power point pages should have the same background as the first two pages that have already been submitted. These pages should cover the current chapter president s activities. Global Impact We are excited to highlight news on the Global Impact Committee. It is time for DKG ladies to appreciate how our impact can go beyond our local chapters to reach the international level. We have established two goals for the year. Goal 1: Promote World Fellowship and make chapters aware of what it does. Goal: Support DKG US Forum/CTAUN Connection Help us meet our goals by communicating this great new initiative.

Winter 2015 Psi State News 7 Georgia Gold Shines at the International Level Dr. Hanna Fowler, Member-at-Large, Dr. Fowler was nominated and elected International Member-at-Large at the International Convention in Indianapolis! We are so proud of her and her many achievements at all levels of our Society! Peggy McCall, International Golden Gift Committee Member, The Golden Gift Fund was established in 1979 to commemorate the Society s 50th anniversary. The Golden Gift Fund Committee determines guidelines for use, recommends projects to the Executive Board and determines criteria for selection of Leadership Management Seminar participants. Peggy McCall will serve on the Golden Gift Committee. Setting the Gold Standard Gold is Malleable Malleability is gold s ability to form into a thin sheet by hammering or rolling, the ability to change form without fracture. Gold can be stretched thin without breaking. It can form bonds easily and can transition without shattering! Gold is the most malleable of all metals. We may often feel stretched too thin in our lives. We may resist change or over react to a setback. As I ve gotten wiser (older), I hope that I ve improved in my ability to be flexible. A better sense of perspective seems to come with age. I can only hope for more! DKG women are malleable! We are flexible when necessary; we can change without breaking. The bonds formed by my DKG sisters are strong. My DKG sisters constantly inspire me as I watch and learn how they handle life s issues. I marvel at how they are flexible in times of stress and how we can strengthen each other. Thank you all for being the Gold Standard! If you know of other women educators who would be good DKG sisters please invite them to a meeting! Betsy Box (Beta Nu) Congratulations, Peggy and Hanna! You will represent the Southeast in a golden manner! Psi State Achievement Award 2015 Psi State Members, It is time to make nominations for the 2015 Psi State Achievement Award. 8 8 Psi State News Winter 2015 Report of the Ad Hoc Committee to Study District Meetings Committee Purpose: To enhance and improve the design of district meetings that will accomplish the purposes set forth in the Psi State Organization s Bylaws and Standing Rules, will attract better attendance and be more cost effective. Committee Task and Timeline: August Discuss the Purpose of District Meetings in the Psi State Organization s Bylaws and Standing Rules to determine the parameters for redesigning. Develop Surveys for Psi State Organization and State Organizations August/ September Survey Psi State Organization members and former District Directors Survey several states for input on district/area meetings October/November Compile survey information and discuss results November/December Met to determine pros and cons of possible designs based on survey information Submit Bylaws and Standing Rules amendments December January Report to the Executive Committee As you read the following options considered and study the example given, this committee would like to state that we have worked to enhance and improve the design of district meetings. However, we realized we were dealing with the Domino Effect. As we looked at making changes, one change led to another. This committee feels these changes will enhance and improve the structure and function of Psi State Organization. Options Considered: Maintain the September Executive Board meeting but move to October in conjunction with fall training and District Meetings. Eliminate the February Executive Board meeting. In odd-numbered years hold the State Convention in May (Purpose remains the same with an executive board meeting to conduct business, approve the budget, selecting the executive secretary and treasurer). Eliminate District Workshops and hold in even-numbered years a Spring Leadership Training Conference in May (Purpose for training chapter officers and committee chairs, general workshops and executive board meeting). Webinar sessions, Go to Meetings and other venues for conducting business and training. Rationale: Moving the September Executive Board meeting to October would allow more planning time between the summer DKG activities and meeting date. This would require a Bylaws and Standing Rules amendment. Eliminate the February Board meeting prior to the State Convention. The main purpose of this executive board meeting is to approve amendments to the Bylaws and Standing Rules to move on to convention. We propose that the Executive Committee perform this function of approving proposed amendments to Psi State Bylaws and Standing Rules for consideration at the State Convention (this is how the process is handled at International). This would require a Bylaws and Standing Rules amendment. (Continued on page 18)

This agency has been in operation for twenty-seven years and has found loving homes for more than 2,000 children. Alpha Chi raised $3,484 at this year s auction with the help of auctioneer, Mr. Eric Vaughn. Items auctioned included holiday goodies, cakes, gift certificates, and an autographed bat and batting glove from Giants baseball player, Buster Posey. The grants will be presented by Chapter President, Lisa Goodin, in April.

13 Psi State News Winter 2015 Georgia Chapters Shine! Sigma The November 8th meeting for the Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma was held at Mayor Rainwater Conference Center in Valdosta, GA. Our meeting included a recognition and awards presented to members with several years of dedication to DKG including Norma Ann Sumner (33 years), Sue Holland (35 years), Betty Paulk (36 years) and Jane Bonner (46 years). DKG has received a $100 Flannery O Connor Level sponsorship donation for the upcoming Southeast Regional conference that will be in July Members were challenged to collect or match the donation by getting other business or personal donations. The World Fellowship Committee hosted the program with two key note speakers from Valdosta State University speaking on International Studies. A wonderful PowerPoint slideshow engaged members and educated them on the importance of including those in attendance at the university to volunteer at schools or speak. In addition, this group assists with international trips and local activities to help the community and schools understand the importance of learning and working with people from around the world. The meeting included the presentation of newly printed yearbooks to all members. Fundraisers for college scholarships and donations to school media centers were discussed. Raffle tickets for a Date Night held around Valentine s Day were given to all members to start selling. The drawing includes a $300 Steel s Jewelry Gift Certificate, Austin s Steakhouse dinner for two, a dozen roses, 2 movie tickets, and cheesecake by the Cheesecake Diva. The highlight of the meeting included a fund-raiser auction. Beautifully knitted scarves, delicious cakes, handcrafted items, homemade jellies, children baskets, books, coffee, gift certificates and wonderful Christmas gifts were included to make the silent auction a success raising $400 to be donated to 3 school libraries to assist with the media program. Epsilon Rolls for a Cure! On October 16th, several members of Epsilon Chapter, Columbus, Georgia participated in the Bunco for Breast Care Night held at the Sara Ruth Carrol Auditorium at St. Francis Hospital. This event was not only for a good cause but had special meaning for our members. The auditorium was named in honor of our beloved Delta Kappa sister and past Epsilon president, Sara Ruth Carrol. Joining Delta Kappa Gamma in 1967, Sara Ruth had been a long-time volunteer for St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary and her passing in January 2013 has been felt greatly in our chapter as well as in our community. Epsilon sisters Diane Sharpe, Wendy Highnote, Carol Lee, Ann Banaszak, and Emily Wilson spent the evening rolling for a cure. Laura Chandler ended up being the big winner at the Epsilon table by rolling just the right combination of numbers. Prizes, a light dinner, and good fellowship made for a fun evening! Portrait of Sara Ruth can be seen in the background with (l-r) Emily Wilson, Dianne Sharpe, Laura Chandler, Carol Lee, Ann Banaszak, and Wendy Highnote.

Winter 2015 Psi State News 14 Georgia Chapters Shine! Gamma Beta Gamma Beta chapter participated in the 3rd Annual Harmony Jubilee Festival. The chapter joined other local artist at the Artisan Market and our Gamma Beta members donated their favorite baked goods, candy, and drinks to be sold as a fundraiser. Thanks to Jeannette Achord, LeaAnne Davis, Kathy Lovett, and Wanda Watson for working the booth at the event. Thanks also to all who donated items for the booth. The money raised will be used for our Hazel and Martha Watson Scholarship fund. The fundraiser earned approximately $250. The Gamma Beta chapter gives a $500 grant to a high school senior or current college student pursuing a degree in Education. At our meeting on December 1st, Gamma Beta will host an Invite a Friend night to introduce prospective members to Delta Kappa Gamma. We will also be having a Silent Auction to raise the remainder of the funds for the scholarship. Wanda Watson works at the Harmony Jubilee. Iota Lends a Helping Hand On August 30th, several members of Iota Chapter served the Rome/Floyd County Community by volunteering time through Habitat for Humanity with a Brush with Kindness project for a local family. Members met early on Saturday to put the finishing touches on a local house. Everyone showed up, showed up on time, showed up with a smile, and showed up dressed to paint! Painting was done on the porch ceiling, the porch, the steps into the house, and a closed in back room. All enjoyed their time of work and fellowship while letting the community know that they were cared about. At the end of the day, many members shared an interest in pursuing other projects with Habitat for Humanity. The project was completed with a heart full of happiness. Members participating were Merrimac Locklear Forsyth, Sara Seckinger, Maggie Oyler, and her grandson, Thomas Oyler, Ronda Ware, Renee Pinkard, Judy Hulsey, Barbara Barfield, and Virginia McChesney.

15 Psi State News Winter 2015 Georgia Chapters Shine! Beta Beta Dr. Jean Bridges was awarded her 50 year pin as a Delta Kappa Gamma Sister. Dr. Bridges first joined Delta Kappa Gamma in 1964 and transferred to the Beta Beta chapter in Dr. Bridges was one of the first professors at what is now East Georgia State College in Swainsboro. She has been an active member of the Beta Beta Chapter, serving as the chapter president during the 1976 biennium. Beta Nu Setting the Gold Standard Recognizing Value Our Beta Nu year is off to a great start with our meeting on September 6. Using the theme of Setting the Gold Standard in Georgia, we recognize the value of our group, our activities, and our worth to others. Value as worth and merit- It s easy to recognize the value of gold. It is a standard that is recognized worldwide and culture-wide. Sometimes, though, the value of other experiences are hidden and we have to look for it and uncover it. We found a real gem in the Global Village Project. Most of us have been aware of the persecution and fear faced by many people in far-away countries; I have to say that I have never really thought about the educational needs of the refugee girls. Global Village recognizes the value of a good education in rescuing these girls from their circumstances. Their mission, ensuring that these girls with interrupted schooling have access to the education needed to pursue their dreams, demonstrates their recognition of the value of each girl and her education. They are giving something of great value for free. Our ladies donated $1,735 to their art program! Gail Greenway (Beta Beta President (right), Dr. Bridges, Charlotte Bridges Xi Xi sisters worked to fill coffee mugs with small items for new teachers. The Early Educators Workshop was a huge success!! In all, 176 mugs were delivered to teachers who have taught three years or less, in Lee, Dougherty, Terrell, and Calhoun counties. A special thank you goes out to the ladies who delivered the completed mugs to the various schools with early educators: Becky Avera, Barb Hunt, Kay Griffin, Mavis Johnson, Michelle Bergozza, and Claire Allen! Value as sacrifice- Bedford School student, Amanda Baltaian and her mother, Cookie, expressed their gratitude for the financial help we provided for Amanda. The Bedford School works exclusively with children who have been professionally diagnosed as having specific learning differences. Even though she struggles financially, Cookie recognizes the value of education and is willing to make sacrifices for Amanda s education. Because she demonstrates this in her actions, Amanda understands the importance of sacrificing luxuries now in order to reach her goals later. Value of service- Our new initiate, Candy Kindberg, has chosen to join us because she sees the value in the DKG purposes. Our guests who came to the meeting were invited because they exemplify the same standards in their personal and professional lives. Value of leadership- Being chosen as a leader is an humbling experience. Our group really shows that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts! Psi State develops skills through workshops such as the Leadership Institute three of us attended in August. The session was facilitated by Dr. Lace Brogden, Asociate Professor of Education at the University of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada. Dr. Bogden is the Northwest Regional Director and member of the DKG Administrative Board. Her theme for the leadership training was Understanding Leadership as Personal Praxis. To value, to regard or esteem highly I admire Pat Cunningham Smith as a charter founder of Beta Nu. Her leadership and dedication for 40+ years is an inspiration to all of us. She is an example of strength and humility, a true gold standard! I value the support and camaraderie we all share. The bond we share is the strength of our chapter. I am excited as we enter the next biennium.

18 Psi State News Winter 2015 Ad Hoc Committee Continued Eliminate District Workshops for training of chapter officers and committee chairs. Moving training sessions to the Spring Leadership Training Conference would allow District Directors to assist the president in the chapter president s training and meet and work directly with chapter presidents in their districts. Planning for a district meeting is an event coordinators job. The duties and responsibilities of district directors should be focused on supporting chapters in their respective districts. (Leadership)This would require a Bylaws and Standing Rules amendment. The SLTC would also allow for longer training sessions where attendees can share and talk with each other. There would be a possibility of chapters working as teams during the district meetings to plan activities for the coming year Eliminate the February Executive Board meeting in even numbered years. Hold a Spring Leadership Training Conference in May for the purpose of training chapter officers and committee chairs, general workshops and an executive board meeting). This day should be designed in such a way that District Directors not only assist in the training but meet with their districts. Spring Leadership Training Conference in May (Purpose for training chapter officers and committee chairs, general workshops and executive board meeting) would allow more time for chapters to elect incoming officers, for incoming officers to select chapter membership, communication and Educational Excellence chairs. This later date would also reduce the amount of time between election and assuming office. The State Convention should be designed to allow for a District Meeting to be designed by the District Director and as one of the actions would be the election of the District Director and Nominations Committee. This would give more leadership for District Directors. Example of a biennium: 2015 July/August Regional Conference Planning session for state officers and committee chairs 2015 August/September Planning and Organizing for Fall Workshop/Executive Board 2015 October Fall Workshop/Executive Board 2016 February Leadership Institute moved from August to February and change focus 2016 May Spring Leadership Training Conference 2016 June Leadership Seminar I 2016 Summer International Convention 2016 July/August State planning session 2016 October Fall Workshop/Executive Board 2017 February Leadership Institute 2017 May State Convention 2017 June Leadership Seminar II Definition of District Directors: Each District Directors shall: 1. Act as a catalyst for member involvement in helping to bring the Psi State and International activities to the members at the local level. This shall be her primary focus. 2. Serve as a voting member of the state executive board during term of office. 3. Assist in the planning and implementation of the Spring Leadership Training Conference held in even-numbered years. 4. Provide an opportunity for monetary gifts to be made to the Psi Sate Emergency Fund, Leadership Fund, or Scholarship Fund at the District Meeting held during the Spring Leadership Training Fund and at the district meetings held at the biennial state convention held in odd-numbered years. (Continued on page 19)

19 Psi State News Winter 2015 Ad Hoc Committee Continued 5. Serve as a member of the State Minutes Approval Committee to read, correct, and approve the minutes of each state executive board meeting. 6. Visit each chapter in her district during the biennium or send a representative; each chapter president should extend an invitation to the district director to visit her chapter. 7. Serve as a member of the Chapter Excellence Award Committee and help select, along with the Psi State First Vice President, the recipient of the award for chapter excellence according to established criteria. The suggestions of the committee will be reflected in proposed amendments for the Psi State Organization s Bylaws and Standing Rules. John Kotter states in his book A Sense of Urgency: You know your organization needs to change. You may even know what the change needs to be: a new strategy, a new IT system, an acquisition or reorganization. But somehow, change comes too slowly, or it feels like you re pushing a boulder up a hill, or the implementation of that great new idea has stalled again. What s missing and is needed in almost all organizations today, is a real sense of urgency a distinctive attitude and gut-level feeling that lead people to grab opportunities and avoid hazards, to make something important happen today, and constantly shed low-priority activities to move faster and smarter, now. A Rose/Flower in Rememberance This program is designed to be presented when a chapter wants to celebrate the importance of Psi State Founders. The colors of the roses were chosen after extensive research of the meanings of color in the language of flowers and the availability of artificial flowers from major craft suppliers. The following list of flowers are also appropriate, although less readily available and, therefore, more expensive. Charlotte Smith: support golden rod Dorothy Hains: scholarship purple iris or cherry tree Elise Boylston: creativity acanthus or yellow rose Ethel Massengale: warmth Gerbera daisy or peppermint Eva Thornton: dedication sunflower Joseph Baggott: music reeds with panacles Ruth Davis: activity bouvardia or thyme Josie Slocumb: action hollyhock Margaret Blair: professionalism mother in law s tongue Margaret Solomon: leadership laurel or burgundy rose May Taylor: loyalty statice or alstroemeria Melville Doughty: organization oak leaves or anthurium Nancy Porter: cooperation white and red rose Mildred English: devotion red peony (Continued on page 20)

20 Psi State News Winter 2015 A Rose/Flower in Remembrance A Rose in Remembrance Written by Virginia M. McChesney, Iota Georgia s Founders: fourteen were they. Women determined to pave the way. Women with a vision so very clear: To found the State Society we hold so dear. Let us take a moment to create a bouquet To honor our Founders on this their day. Born in Mississippi was our Charlotte Smith. Her expertise in drawing and all art was certainly no myth. The support of the programs of DKG was a project she chose to carry. In Psi State, she would shine as first in charge of the treasury. A green rose represents her support. Miss Dora Hains began to teach in nineteen hundred two. Of the founding of Delta Kappa Gamma she did not then have a clue. When Psi State s organization was founded in nineteen thirty six, Her commitment to scholarship, education, and the Society were things she chose to mix. A purple rose represents her scholarship. Well known to all in Psi State for her generosity, Elise Boylston was also known for her creativity. An artist and a writer her works brought her to the fore. As for her gifts to Psi State, one could not ask for more. A lavender rose represents her creativity. A Founder with a lovely smile, Ethel Massengale s warmth to all was evident. Although she was our first historian, Her tour of service to Psi State started as First Vice President. A yellow rose represents her warmth. What a dedicated leader our first Psi State President was! If she were still with us, Eva Thornton would probably write on the Buzz. The things she did to further DKG are too great to number. Her dedication to Society, church, and community we will forever remember. An orange rose represents her dedication. Josephine Baggott from Atlanta she did hail. A teaching career of 39 years, of music she knew every detail. About the Purposes of DKG, Josephine deeply cared. Her talent of performing music with both Psi State and her community she shared. A pink rose represents her gift of music. Music was an art that Ruth Davis did truly love. Her active participation in musical arts fit her like a glove. In Delta Kappa Gamma, Ruth found a place for action. Her contributions to Psi State gave her great satisfaction. A fuschia rose represents her activity. A woman of action Josie Slocumb would be when she became a Psi State Founder. Her love for our Society kept her working so it would not flounder. For 45 years as an educator in Georgia she did serve. For her dedication and dependability, the honors she received she did deserve. A red rose represents her action. Margaret Blair was introduced to DKG by an Alabama founder: her sister. The enthusiasm for growing the Society, she did share with her. As Psi State s first Recording Secretary, Margaret did excel. And as a clothing and textiles professor at UGA for years she did quite well. A red rose represents her professionalism. Margaret Solomon, Maggie by her friends was known. The responsibilities as an educator for 40 years she would own. To Psi State her abilities of leadership she would show. Through her participation both she and Psi State would grow. A burgundy rose represents her leadership. Chosen as Psi State s second treasurer, May Taylor would ably be. And to hold every office in Alpha Chapter, she would over time agree. A member of several other organizations, to Delta Kappa Gamma May was most loyal. Her determination to see Psi State grow, no other activities could foil. A pink rose represents her loyalty. A middle school and high school teacher, Melville Doughty chose to be. Her contributions to Psi State are not hard for us to see. Her organizational skills helped her as our second Psi State President. She was active at many DKG levels until she moved to Florida to be a resident. A terra cotta rose represents her organizational skills. Nancy Porter was from Alabama and back to it she went But while she was in Georgia her time was quite well spent. In her, cooperation was a notable trait.we regret she left DKG at such an early date. A red and white rose represents her cooperation. (Continued on page 21)

21 Psi State News Winter 2015 A Rose/Flower in Remembrance The devoted Mildred English knew DKG should grow To further the beliefs of the Society she loved so. From North Carolina to Georgia she then came. Her receiving the first International Achievement Award given a Psi State sister was only part of her fame. A white rose represents her devotion. The rose reflects the beauty of both mind and spirit. The Founders of Psi State must have seen the beauty in it. By bringing forth these flowers on this special day, We show grateful appreciation to our Founders in this way. Instructions: First create your arrangement so you have an idea of what the finished product might look like. I chose a metal urn, put Styrofoam in the bottom and then added fern so the finished product would look more arrangementlike. Using labels, identify which rose/flower goes to which Founder. Ask 14 sisters as they enter the meeting to portray a Founder and put her rose/flower in the arrangement when the rose color/flower is announced. You might want to include the Psi State Brief History as part of this remembrance celebration.
