1 MINUTES ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISORY BOARD REGULAR MEETING January 28, 2009 I. CALL TO ORDER Curtis Byrd called a regular meeting of the Town of Melbourne Beach Environmental Advisory Board to order at the Town Hall at 7:10pm. II ROLL CALL Members present; Curtis Byrd, Chairman Judy Brooke, Member Theresa Goldenberg, Member Rita Karpie, Mayor Colleen Linder-Gonzales, Intern Danielle Esposito, FIT Student Larry Hosmer, Public Works Jennifer Englehardt, FIT student III IV. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Judy Brooke moved to approved the minutes of January 28, Theresa Goldenberg second. Vote all ayes. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Loggerhead Park update: February 7 th is the Sea Oats planting and exotic plant removal from 8:30 to 12:00. Judy will bring the refreshments. B. Backyard habitat community: Application review will be at the next meeting. C. Web page; Add upcoming events to the website. April 18 th will be the next Beach Clean-Up D. Theresa reported that we had almost 15 groups of visitors that found the geocache over the holiday break. V. NEW BUSINESS A. Curtis will write up the history of Loggerhead Park to be posted on the website with photos. B. Melbourne Beach Green Challenge for Founder s Day Theresa will work on Flyer. Judy will ask the zoo to donate passes. Curtis will ask the Parks Board for coupons to give to the essay contest winners. C. Colleen Lindler-Gonzales reported that she is working with the Town of Melbourne Beach on the Storm water initiative and to get grants. D. Rita discussed the Space Coast Climate Change Initiative that will be held on February 9 th at BCC. She is hoping that the Town of Melbourne Beach could host future forums. E. Reminder of KBB Beach Clean up on April 18 th. Judy and Theresa will cover Curtis.

2 F. Rita asked us to think of ways to make Founder s Day a more green event. Maybe even a litter free event. VI. ADJOURNMENT Member Brooke moved, second member Goldenberg, to adjourn the regular meeting. Vote all ayes. Motion carried. All Business was concluded at 8:40pm

CALL TO ORDER Curtis Byrd called a regular meeting of the Town of Melbourne Beach Environmental Advisory Board to order at the Town Hall at 7:07pm. II ROLL CALL Members present; Curtis Byrd, Chairman Judy Brooke, Member Theresa Goldenberg, Member Larry Hosmer, Public Works Lisa Johnson, DEP Shoreline Restoration Coordinator Peter Cohen, private citizen III IV. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Judy Brooke moved to approved the minutes of January 28, Theresa Goldenberg second. Vote all ayes. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Loggerhead Park update: February 7 th was the sea oats planting. We planted 2 trays or 97 sea oats and removed 23 cubic yards of invasive plants. B. Backyard Community Habitat application for the NWF Community Wildlife habitat was reviewed. Member Goldenberg moved to approve the $25 application fee to be taken out of the EAB budget. Member Brooke second, all ayes C. Web page; Add upcoming events to the website. Put link to flyer for the April 25th Beach Clean-Up. Once the NWF application is accepted we will but links to the NWF backyard habitat and Wildlife University on the web page. D. Theresa, Larry and Lisa discussed the Space coast Climate Change Forum. It was discussed that since over 110 people participated in the forum at BCC that Melbourne Beach doesn t have a facility big enough to hold a future forum here. V. NEW BUSINESS A. Lisa Johnson the shoreline restoration coordinator from the Florida Department of Environmental Protect gave a presentation about Mangrove Replenishment in Melbourne Beach. She discussed the history of the project and things that we could do in the future to continue the project. We will look to making this one of our future project working with Larry and maybe

4 recruiting private citizen and Melbourne Beach Gardners to help collect and grow the propagules. B. Lisa also discussed other salt-tolerant plants such as the buttonwoods, Batis saltwort, sea purslane, sea ox-eye daisy and marsh grass that can be planted along the shoreline for protection and also to encourage natural mangrove plantings. This too could be a future project for the board C. Curtis showed us the flyer for the KBB April 25 th Beach Clean-up at Ocean Park. D. Curtis suggested that we might want to do a yearly Young Environmentalist award to be presented at the 2010 Founder s Day. Everyone should think about it and bring their ideas to the next meeting. VI. ADJOURNMENT Member Brooke moved, second member Goldenberg, to adjourn the regular meeting. Vote all ayes. Motion carried. All Business was concluded at 8:49pm

APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Judy Brooke moved to approved the minutes of February 25, Theresa Goldenberg second. Vote all ayes. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Loggerhead Park update: We discussed getting more organized about the information in the kiosk. The information should coincide with natural events such as turtle season, right whale season and sea bean information. B. Backyard Community Habitat application for the NWF Community Wildlife habitat is waiting for word from Roxanne Paul the NWF coordinator. C. Web page; Add upcoming events to the website. Link to flyer for the April 25th Beach Clean-Up was added. Once the NWF application is accepted we will but links to the NWF backyard habitat and Wildlife University on the web page. Also minutes and agenda are now on the web page. D. Curtis asked the members to come up with a criterion for the Young Environmentalist Award. Also needed are guidelines on the nomination process and how and who would judge the nominees. E. Mangrove planting. Larry will look into where we should plant mangroves and we will start a grow your own project to be introduced at our Founder s Day booth. Ask Lisa to write an article about mangrove planting for the town newsletter. V. NEW BUSINESS A. Rita presented the board with a large poster that a BCC student made for their school project on Red algae. We discussed placing it at the kiosk by the

6 river. Member Goldenberg motioned that we spend up to $60 to have the poster laminated. All members ayes. Larry will take it to Kinko s to get it laminated. B. Curtis opened the discussion about non-active members. He suggested that we contact them to see if they are still interested in being part of the board and if not we should ask them to resign so we can recruit new members. He also asked that we respond to Rhonda s about attending the upcoming meetings so we know if we have a quorum. C. Rita introduced Denise Lemming who is on the Environmental Team at Vero Beach Disney. She told us about Freecycling. An event that is held twice a year at Vero Disney where people bring items that they no longer need or want and everyone shops for free. Rita would like us to think about holding a similar event in the town of Melbourne Beach. Members discussed the best way to hold an event like this and decided to think about it and bring their ideas to the next meeting. VI. ADJOURNMENT Member Brooke moved, second member Goldenberg, to adjourn the regular meeting. Vote all ayes. Motion carried. All Business was concluded at 8:14pm

8 MINUTES ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISORY BOARD REGULAR METTING May 27, 2009 I. CALL TO ORDER Curtis Byrd called a regular meeting of the Town of Melbourne Beach Environmental Advisory Board to order at the Town Hall at 7:04pm. II ROLL CALL Members present; Curtis Byrd, Chairman Scott Herbert, Member Theresa Goldenberg, Member Larry Hosmer, Public Works Rita Karpie, Mayor III IV. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Scott Herbert moved to approved the minutes of April 22, Theresa Goldenberg second. Vote all ayes. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Park Kiosk update: Theresa proposed that we consider having guest kiosk displays. Such as: The Turtle Preservation Society during turtle season or the Marine Resource Council could do a display about the Right Whale etc. Curtis stated that the board would have to approve all the information that will be displayed. We decided to approach possible candidates in the fall. B. Backyard Community Habitat application for the NWF Community Wildlife habitat has been approved. Theresa reported that the Get your Backyard Certified Challenge is in full swing and as of the meeting time we are up to 17 certified backyards. We need 51 in all. We will continue to inform people about the project and encourage them to participate. Theresa passed out several applications to board members and asked them to give them to interested people. C. Web page: Theresa made a power point presentation about the NWF backyard habitat and the Community wildlife habitat and asked Tina to put it on the web page. Also links to NWF site and the Wildlife University were added. D. Mangrove planting: The grow your own project mangrove project information booth at Founder s Day was a success. Lisa collected many names of people who will be interested in helping with the growing and planting. We will be holding a workshop in the fall. Scott said he has many mangroves that are ready for planting and will help in the fall.

9 E. Our booth at Founder s Day was a success and helped spread the word about the Community Wildlife Project. V. NEW BUSINESS A. Rita discussed trying to have recycle booths at next years Founder s Day. Also reusable beer mugs with logos, water stations and maybe cornstarch plates and cups. We will work with the Parks Board on suggestions for next year Founder s Day trying to make it a greener event. B. Scott wanted to know if anyone could give a talk to SAAT (students against alcohol and tobacco). Curtis suggested asking someone at Keep Brevard Beautiful. C. Theresa discussed possibility of putting up Purple Martin birdhouses at some of the area parks. Larry said he would not recommend Ryckman but suggested 6 th Avenue next to the boat launch would work. Theresa will look into getting a grant for the houses. Maybe we can find someone to do a workshop about Purple Martins. Theresa will ask the members of the Space Coast Audubon Society. VI. CALL TO ORDER Curtis Byrd called a regular meeting of the Town of Melbourne Beach Environmental Advisory Board to order at the Town Hall at 7:03pm. II ROLL CALL Members present; Curtis Byrd, Chairman Judy Brooke, Member Theresa Goldenberg, Member Larry Hosmer, Public Works III APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Judy Brooke moved to approved the minutes of May 27, Theresa Goldenberg second. Vote all ayes. IV. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Loggerhead Park update: Larry reported that he has updated all the kiosk. He told us about the kiosk in Nance Park made by the Turtle Preservation Society. They have asked if we would like some similar ones put up at Ocean Park. He suggested that everyone on the committee should go look at them and decide if we might want them at our park. Curtis is going to contact Keep Brevard Beautiful, Theresa is going to contact the Marine Resource council and the Turtle Preservation Society and Judy will contact the Barrier Island Center to see if they have any posters or information that we can use in the kiosk. B. Backyard Community Habitat Theresa and Judy have a meeting with Gemini PTO on October 13 at 8:15 to discuss how Gemini can be involved with this project. We also will make a presentation on January 19 to the Beachside Gardener s club to get them involved with the Community Wildlife Project. We also need to log our volunteer hours on the NWF web site. We will register LHP to be certified for as a wildlife habitat. C. Web page: the Community Wildlife Habitat power point has been posted on the town web site D. National Estuaries Day we will be meeting at Melbourne Beach Pier to pick up mangrove propagules along the Indian River. These propagules will be used in the grow your own project.. V. NEW BUSINESS A. KBB Beach clean up had 40 people participate and collected 30 bags of trash.

CALL TO ORDER Curtis Byrd called a regular meeting of the Town of Melbourne Beach Environmental Advisory Board to order at the Town Hall at 7:02pm. II ROLL CALL Members present; Curtis Byrd, Chairman Judy Brooke, Member Theresa Goldenberg, Member Larry Hosmer, Public Works Nicole Perine, Barrier Island III APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Judy Brooke moved to approved the minutes of October 28, Theresa Goldenberg second. Vote all ayes. IV. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Loggerhead Park update: The LHP annual report was sent in on November 17, Larry will add pictures of the sign. Next year for the report we will do a plant survey and an informal turtle nest count of the park. Nicole Perine from the Barrier Island Environmental Center reported that the turtles had a pretty good year and they would be able to provide us with that information for next years report. Backyard Community Habitat Theresa and Judy had a meeting with Gemini PTO and the student council. They have decided to make this year s goal to become a Certified Schoolyard Habitat. Three hundred and fifty flyer/applications went home with Gemini elementary students encouraging then to participate in the Get Your Backyard Certified Contest. The winning class will get a pizza party. Theresa will monitor the number of backyards certified with the monthly update she receives from NWF. Web page: Theresa will write a newsletter article about getting your backyard certified and ask that it be published in the January Town newsletter and attached to the web site so people have a place to go to gain information about the project. Grow Your Own project: Ten people showed up to plant 300 black and red mangrove propagules by the Melbourne Beach pier riverfront on November 14 th. These will be monitored for success. V. NEW BUSINESS We need to start working on the criteria for Young Environmentalist Award to be given out on Founder s Day.Mi We also need to find out the date for this year s Sea Oat planting. Theresa suggested that we do a Loggerhead Park clean-up on the same day.
