1 October 17, 2016 A meeting of the Westfield School Committee was held on Monday, October 17, 2016, at 7:00 pm in the City Council Chambers, City Hall, 59 Court Street. Members present by roll call were: Mr. Bill Duval, Mr. Jeffrey Gosselin, Mrs. Diane Mayhew, Mrs. Cindy Sullivan, Mr. Kevin J. Sullivan, Ramon Diaz, and Chairman Brian Sullivan. At 7:01 pm Chairman Sullivan called the meeting to order. 1. Pledge of Allegiance Chairman Sullivan asked if anyone was taping the meeting and if so, please state your name and address: none A moment of silence was held in memory of Mr. Jack Starzik, a school department employee, who recently passed away. 2. Public participation, excluding personnel: none 3. Westfield High School student representatives: Erin McDermott and Aiden Chisholm-Sluben were in attendance and updated the committee regarding recent and upcoming events. 4. South Middle School presentation: A few members of the South Middle School s Student Council were in attendance and provided an update to the committee. Mr. Baker commended the students. 5. ew Superintendent Induction Program: Mr. Kevin Courtney was in attendance and shared information regarding the ew Superintendent Induction Program (SIP). Mr. Courtney, a retired Superintendent, serves as a coach for Superintendent Czaporowski. 6. Approval of the October 3, 2016 School Committee meeting minutes: moved, seconded to approve the regular School Committee meeting minutes of October 3, All were in favor. Motion passes. abstained. 7. Approval of home school applications HE to HE : moved, seconded to approve home school applications HE to HE for the school year. All were in favor. Motion passes. 8. Approval of field trips: a. moved, seconded to approve the Abner Gibbs Elementary School trip to the ew England Air Museum located in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, on ovember 1, All were in favor. Motion passes.

2 b. moved, seconded to approve the Highland Elementary School trip to the ew England Air Museum located in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, on ovember 1 and 9, All were in favor. Motion passes. c. moved, seconded to approve the Russell Elementary School trip to the ew England Air Museum located in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, on ovember 10, All were in favor. Motion passes. d. moved, seconded to approve the Southampton Road Elementary School trip to the ew England Air Museum located in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, on ovember 2, All were in favor. Motion passes. e. moved, seconded to approve the Southampton Road Elementary School trip to the ew England Air Museum located in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, on ovember 3, All were in favor. Motion passes. f. moved, seconded to approve the orth Middle School field trip to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC, June 5-8, All were in favor. Motion passes. g. moved, seconded to approve the orth Middle School trip to Space Camp located in Huntsville, Alabama, June 4-9, All were in favor. Motion passes. stated that she supported the orth Middle School trip to Space Camp but shared her concern that South Middle School students did not have the opportunity to go on this trip nd and final reading, by title only, of policy File: JLCEA WPS Life Threatening Allergy (LTA): moved, seconded a 2 nd /final reading, by title only, of policy File: JLCEA WPS Life Threatening Allergy (LTA). All were in favor. Motion passes. 10. Waive 1 st reading, 2 nd /final reading, by title only of policies: moved, seconded to waive the 1 st reading and have a 2 nd /final reading, by title only, of policy File: JLCEA-R WPS Life Threatening Allergy Policy. Approval of increase to the Substitute urse Pay: moved, seconded to approve the increase of the pay for the Substitute urse to $ per day from the old rate of $ per day. abstain Chairman Sullivan 6-0 motion passes 14. Superintendent s Report a. Acceptance of gifts/donations: moved, seconded to accept the following gifts/donations: - Westfield High School, Western Mass Environmental, LLC, in the amount of $2,500.00, gift account, school use - Westfield Technical Academy, Kurtz Inc General Contractor, Westfield, MA, 3 cubes of lumber, valued at $2,142.03, school use

4 Chairman Sullivan b. Other: Mr. Czaporowski reported that the first initial board meeting of the Business and School Task Force will be held on Friday at the Holiday Inn. He thanked Kate Phelon for her assistance with this. Mr. Czaporowski reported that Governor Charlie Baker was scheduled to visit the Aviation Program at Westfield Technical Academy on Tuesday. On ovember 15 th the Westfield Public Schools will host The Rise, Fall, and Recovery of BA Star Chris Herron. The event is free and will be held at Westfield Technical Academy at 6:30pm. 15. Mayor s update: Mayor Sullivan updated the committee. Also, he announced that Mr. Ramon Diaz was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel at Barnes Air ational Guard Base in a ceremony on Sunday. 16. School Committee update: none 17. Motion passes. 18. Old business: reported that Pocketbook Bingo will be held on October 27 th at Tekoa Country Club and tickets are $30. Superintendent Czaporowski will be the announcer. 19. Subcommittee Reports/Recommendations: a. Reports: reported the Human Resources & Policy Subcommittee met earlier this evening to review policies that will be brought forward to the full committee at the ovember 7, 2016 meeting. b.
