6 Preface To The Fourteenth Revised Edition The Fourteenth Revised Edition of History of Modern Europe Since 1789 is a boon for the students. There were The Great Personalities of the Revolution before the rise of Napoleon. The first in the list is the name of Mirabeau. There was The Vienna Settlement of 1815 which was based on the three principles like restoration, legitimacy and compensation. There was independence of Belgium which came after the fall of Napolean, the ruler of Holland were restored and given a new constitution of the people. The rest of the errors have been rectified. The modified maps have been placed in the proper place. The study of this book will give the view that Europe was an extremely strong nation. It is our earnest hope that students and teachers will find the revised edition very much beneficial. At last the precious suggestions and critical comments for the improvement in the subsequent edition by the readers are very much welcome. The book is reformatted and published in bigger size. AUTHOR Disclaimer : While the author of this book have made every effort to avoid any mistake or omission and have used their skill, expertise and knowledge to the best of their capacity to provide accurate and updated information. 8 Preface To The Thirteenth EditioN I have great pleasure in placing the fourteenth edition of the book in the hands of the readers. In this edition I have rewritten the chapter on The Cold War and added a new Chapter on German Revolution and the Weimer Republic ( ). I have no doubt that these additions have added to the utility of the book. I have always held the view that a study of the history of Modern Europe is very essential for the people of my country. The reason is that revolutionary changes took place in Europe during the period covered by this book and those changes affected profoundly the whole of the world. There was the unification of Germany and Italy during the nineteenth century. There was the Industrial Revolution in Europe which changed the face of the whole world. There was the expansion of Europe in all parts of the world. There was the disintegration of the Turkish Empire and the emergence of the Balkan States as independent entities. There was also the disintegration of the once great Empire of Austria-Hungary which should serve as a warning and lesson to the leaders and people of India who are wasting all their energy and time in wresting power from one another. A study of the History of Modern Europe is both instructive and inspiring. A study of this history shows that both individuals and nations had to make tremendous sacrifices to achieve their goals. They worked very hard to achieve what they can rightly be proud of. We can learn a lesson from Europe that no country can safeguard its territorial integrity unless it puts great emphasis on her defence. Defence preparedness is essential in the modern world and that is not possible without industrialising our country. It has been found from experience that industrialisation and defence-preparedness go together. There is a race going on in the world and each nation is inventing its own weapons and we in this country cannot and must not rely upon the weapons bought or got from other countries. It is rightly pointed out that the Northern States succeeded against the Southern States in the Civil War ( ) in the United States as the Northern States were industrialised while the Southern States were not. We must not forget that it is only a strong nation which is respected in the world and can have a say in the affairs of the world. All this is possible only if the people of India work very hard and produce surplus wealth which can be used for military preparedness. We must subordinate our individual interests to those of the country. We must always remember that nobody will die if India lives. I thank once again all those who have patronised this book. This gives me the satisfaction that my labours have been appreciated. D-805, New Friends Colony, New Delhi-65 November 1, 1985 VIDYA DHAR MAHAJAN (vii)
