Your EAP o Emotional and family relationships o Stress o Substance abuse o Financial o Legal o Managing change o Domestic violence o Conflicts with coworkers or supervisors o Elder care and retirement o Life transitions o Break All ICSEW History Amee Bahr Filling the position for the first time after ten years of the position being vacant Amee visited the state archives office to obtain ICSEW historical information Photos are historical records of past organizations and events Governor Dixie Ray, the first Washington female Governor, revived the organization after Governor Evans started the Women s Council 1970 Governors Interagency on the Status of Women 1989 Governor Gardner with Executive Board after signing the Executive Order 1975 had a 20% pay differential existed between male and female job classes o This appears to be the last survey and a new survey is in order Breaking Tradition was the previous Interact What issues face women today? o Women taking time off for family has a negative impact on earning potential What does the future hold? There are equal pay proclamation opportunities for ICSEW members to attend check the ICSEW website for additional details Page 2 of 9

3 Toastmasters Tumwater Talkers Learning how to speak publicly and offering the work of the day Leadership Monitoring the use of the word of the day Ah-Grammarian will be tracking the uses of crutch words, such as Uh, Um, Like, and You Know Teach how to change up and go with the flow Evaluators are used to observe speakers and how well they convey the designated objectives First speaker is a Japanese translator, who was admittedly nervous about speaking in public Toastmasters helps speaking skills as well as leadership skills o Felt she didn t belong at first o Toastmasters are very supportive and welcoming she decided to join nine months ago o Her only regret was not joinging the organization sooner speaking in public is a good way to punch fear in the face Second speaker is Amanda, a four year member of Toastmasters, and will be speaking on Leadership and what Toastmasters has done for her o Most need to work on their leadership skills and are not natural born leaders o There are people from all over the world and many opportunities to learn about different cultures o Toastmasters teaches how to give and receive positive and negative / constructive feedback o Toastmasters is a safe space to practice public speaking skills o Tips Make talks as personal as possible, using personal experiences in evaluations to connect on a personal level; recognize improvements; buildup with something positive, name an area of improvement, and leave with a positive o Communication and leadership skills will improve with Toastmasters Table Topics o ICSEW members took turns with impromptu extreme vacation topics o Speaking in front of people is learnable o March 25 th at 1000 AM at the Tumwater Library is a Toastmasters speech contest Practice-practice-practice Page 3 of 9

4 Legislative Update Leatta Dahlhoff GOP budget should be released today House will introduce operating budget early next week Cut off dates March 29th is the last day to hear bills April 4th is the fiscal committee cutoff April 23rd is the last day of the regular session Paid family leave has not passed house or senate one bill is still alive Lunch on Your Own All Wellness Activity All Stretching video and stretching story Chair inquired if there was interest in mentioning employment opportunities at other state agencies o The audience answered in the affirmative o Evergreen State College o Pierce College o Washington State Patrol o Subcommittee Meetings and Report Out All Leadership Conference Erika Summers o Contract with PLU in progress o Vote to approve up to $15, Motion presented by the subcommittee for approving up to $15, for the PLU contract to cover site, audio visual and catering costs Second by Sheryl Flynn Discussion None Motion carried unanimously o Lot of sponsors this year o Swag Health Care Authority provided the bags Offering shirts to representatives and alternates who are WORKING the conference (button up or polo), with decisions to be made next meeting o Instructions being provided on Sign Up Genius for duty sign-ups o Admission is free for representatives working the conference Health and Wellness Ann Bartholomew o Fair is May 23 rd posters being distributed o Volunteer list is available let Ann know if available to assist Ann Page 4 of 9

6 Sign up Genius will serve as Conference RSVP o There is a General Membership Meeting feedback form to be able to provide feedback to improve ICSEW meetings Break All Women in WA Govt Svc Susan Rohrer & Shanna Stevenson In the 1860s, Mercer recruited women to go west to be brides Libbie and Anna Peebles became a clerk and deputy collector of revenue Many women worked for the legislature in the 1860s, and made as much as $5 a day Ellen Stevenson was a Territorial and First State Librarian and ran for public office as superintendent Constitutional Convenention held in Olympia in 1889 and Women s Suffrage was a separate ballot issue 1890 All Employment Open to Women Workers but could not hold elected office Women worked as faculty at Colleges as early as 1882 Bernice Sapp kept records of Suffrage History and after the right to vote in 1910, was part of an all women jury 1909 Legislative Session passed a Constituional Amendent for Women s Suffrage that was passed by male voters o 5 th state to allow women the right to vote, several years prior to the national right to vote o Native American Women could not vote until 1924 o There was a requirement to read and speak English to be able to vote Josepine Corliss Preston was elected in 1913 as the Superintendent of Public Instruction and served in that capacity for 16 years, during which time was responsible for hiring additional women Reba Hurn was the first woman senator in 1923 Ida McQuesten was head of Maple Lane in1919 Sadie F Hall was head for the School for the Blind 1939 June Fowles was the first woaman Assistant Attorney General and Christine Gregoire was the first Attorney General in 1993 (Governor from ) Current Cabinet - 10/24 are women 1963 Governor Rosselini established the Governor s Commission on the Status of Women and the first Chair was Mildred Dunn 1970 Governor Dan Evans established the Interagency Committee on the Status of Women Page 6 of 9

7 1971 Created Women s Council Interagency Committee staff resource Dixie Lee Ray changed the focus of ICSW and appointment representatives from agencies to serve, now the ICSEW (1989) by Executive Order 1975 Annette Sandberg was first Chief of the Washington State Patrol 1977 Dr. Rossalind Woodhourse was the first African American Woman in Governor s Cabinet and first to head motor vehicle department nationally Lynda Wheeler was the first female deck officer and first vessel master in the Washington Department of Ferries Comparable Worth in Washington pay equity for state workers implemented , and was supported and monitored by the ICSEW 1987 was the first year that women outnumbered men in State Employment There has been a steady increase of women being hired in management positions 2006 ICSEW Records become part of Washington Women s History Consortium Online Resources ICSEW Co-Sponsor of Day of Jubiliation November 8, 2010 for 100 years of Washington Women Voters When the professional and economic lives of women are improved, all benefit The Women of Washington State and the men who supported them in 1910 passed suffrage as the 5 th state o Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, then Washington o The movement went west to east o Susan B. Anthony visited Olympia and was the first woman to speak in front of a state legislature The Bigelow House is where she dined Washington Women s History Consortium was established in 2005 The 2020 Women s Vote Centennial logo has a torch and flag colors lots of opportunities for involvement There is a page for the Women s History Consortium on the Washington State Historical Society website HB 2007 is under consideration in the legislature and will be heard on 3/24/2017 SB 3073 was the Women s Sufrage Centennial Commission. 8 Meeting Re-Cap Leatta Dahlhoff Pamela Smith was the Professional Development Chair and the Executive Board is accepting resumes for interviews o Responsible for scheduling speakers for conference and throughout the year for the General Membership o Alternates can apply for an Executive Board position as well o Term would be for the remainder of the current ICSEW representative term Reminder for checklist to create a top ten list of what would like to be accomplished by the next meeting o What tools and resources are needed to help accomplish goals? A month prior to the General Membership meeting, a reminder will go out to invite guests and to complete the top ten list, as well as job opportunities from representing agencies Page 8 of 9
