1 19th Century Revolutions Mini-Research and Simulation Project

2 Introduction

3 Project Hook The Smithsonian Institution, which consists of 19 museums (and the National zoo!), is located in Washington, DC. This expansive complex focuses on education and research, and was established in 1846 in order to increase and diffuse knowledge. This year, the Smithsonian is proud to announce that they are breaking ground to construct a new building, The Museum of Enlightened Revolutions! And they are looking for candidates for consideration for the first class of inductees in 2020! Will your country make the cut?

4 The Museum of Enlightened Revolutions Mission Statement To understand the role of both Enlightenment ideas and nationalism in establishing and shaping nation states that exist today. To provide a forum to learn, critique and evaluate nations and their struggles to live up to the ideals of popular sovereignty, the social contract, equality, protection of natural and individual rights, and limited government.

5 The Candidate Countries

6 Eligibility Countries are eligible for induction if their revolutionary period reflected all of the following: Popular desire of citizens to establish a nation-state Cohesive sense of national identity Enlightenment ideals In addition to the above, inductees will have had a significant impact on the development, evolution and preservation of Enlightenment ideas in their region of the world.

10 The Project: Complete the Application Process for Your Group s Country

11 Country Statement: Single spaced, no more than 1 page description of the revolution, its causes and long-term effects up to c1900. Recommendation: The Written Application There are 3 components of the written application Single spaced, no more than 1 page evaluation of the extent to which the country established Enlightenment ideas by c1900. Influence Score: Single spaced, no more than 1 page evaluation of the impact of the country s revolution on the region.

12 Can include, but are not limited to: Official documents Literature Propaganda Artwork Photographs (events; leaders) maps Portfolio of Sample Artifacts Find, compile, and curate 4 essential artifacts that should be included in your country s exhibit. To curate: Consider your audience Informative and interesting Identify, describe, and cite Assume nothing, explain everything Conceptualize the exhibition Be sure to explain how all the documents fit together and why they are important.

13 Creative reflection MUST represent Enlightenment ideas as manifested in the country s revolutionary period, as well as the social and/or political changes. Can be, but not limited to: Reflective Art Original creative reflection that would be included as inspirational component of exhibit Piece of artwork Poetry Song *Artwork can be a contemporary reflection on the 19th century, Meaning it does not have to appear to me made in the 19th century.

15 Criteria for Selection Process The extent to which the revolution developed a sense of fraternity (unity, nationalism) in the country The extent to which different sectors/classes within society worked together to establish equality Each country will be evaluated on the extent to which it achieved Liberty, equality, and fraternity by c1900 The extent to which the revolution became a model for protecting natural and individual rights Ultimately, can the country aptly be called an Enlightened Revolution?

16 Criteria for Success (Grading)

17 Criteria Country statement must: Country Statement Be no more than 1 page, single spaced Be grammatically correct, concise and focused Accurately and comprehensively describe the causes of the revolution Accurately and Comprehensively describe the long-term effects of the revolution up to c1900 Have all content properly cited

18 Criteria Recommendation must: Recommendation Be no more than 1 page, single spaced Be grammatically correct, concise and focused Identify and evaluate the ways in which the revolution established liberty, equality, and fraternity by 1900 Identify and evaluate the ways in which the revolution established did not liberty, equality, and fraternity by 1900 Make a convincing argument for the country s induction into the museum Have all content properly cited

19 Score on the Influence Report On a scale of 1-100, rank your country. Provide 2 separate scores = most influential in spreading the positive attributes of liberty, equality and fraternity 100- = most influential in spreading the negative attributes of revolutionary change Criteria Regional Ranking Report must: Be no more than 1 page, single spaced Be grammatically correct, concise and focused Determine where your country ranks on the scale for amount of influence in spreading the positive attribute of liberty, equality and fraternity Determine where your country ranks on the scale for amount of influence in spreading the negative attributes of revolutionary change Convincingly justify your group s ranking providing accurate and adequate supporting evidence.

20 Criteria: Portfolio must: Portfolio of Sample Artifacts Be grammatically correct, concise and focused Be curated with a clearly identified theme Include 4 informative and interesting artifacts that are cited with full citations Provides a well-developed description of each artifact Provide well-developed analysis of the importance of the artifact to the revolution

21 Criteria: Reflective art must: Reflective Art How to submit Artwork as created, separate from digital application Poetry digitally with application Song digitally with application Represent Enlightenment ideas as manifested in the country s revolutionary period Represent the social and/or political changes that took place by c1900 Demonstrate care, craftsmanship, and thoughtful creativity
