3 CALL FOR PARTICIPATION The Faculty of Law of Sassari University and the Association for the Promotion of University Studies in Central Sardinia (Consorzio per la promozione degli Studi universitari nella Sardegna centrale), in collaboration with the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, Town Council of Nuoro, the Italian Council for the European Movement, Europe Direct and the Nuoro Chamber of Commerce, are pleased to offer the third International Summer School on «The Future of Human Rights in Europe» to be held in Nuoro from 23rd to 28th July, The Summer School is an intensive course which takes place over five days and is designed to provide an in-depth interdisciplinary view of the subject. The program includes lectures, case studies, a workshop on migrant rights and a visit to a Special Reception Centre (Centro di Accoglienza Straordinaria) in Sarule, as well as time to discover the culture and traditions of Sardinia. The urgent need to improve understanding of issues linked to the protection of fundamental human rights is increasingly clear. This is no longer a topic for a few specialists but has become a key social and legal area which no branch of the legal profession can afford to ignore. 3

4 The Summer School is an advanced course focusing on in-depth examination of recent developments in the treatment of fundamental human rights in Europe. Particular attention will be paid to the protective instruments of the Council of Europe and of the European Union and how these work together, to the accession of the European Union to the European Convention of Human Rights, and to the relationships between the various Courts. Study sessions will provide an opportunity to review the future of human rights protection in a variety of contemporary social contexts and through the perspective of recent rulings from the European Court of Human Rights and from the European Court of Justice. Topical contexts TEACHING include the international protection of migrants and disabled people with particular reference to European policies on social inclusion. The lecturers are academics from Italian and international Universities, practicing lawyers and representatives of European Institutions working in the Human Rights field. One full day will be dedicated to reception of migrants and their engagement in socially useful projects. The summer school participants will visit the CAS (Special Reception Centre) in Sarule where they will eat lunch and take part in a discussion with the migrants who are based there. 4

5 SCHOLARSHIPS AND CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE At the end of the course, two scholarships of each, dedicated to the memory of Dr. Gianfranca Deiana, will be awarded for a study trip to Luxembourg and Strasbourg in November The study trip will provide scholarship holders with the opportunity to participate actively (as far as is permitted) in the work of the EU Court of Justice, the Council of Europe, the European Court of Human Rights and the plenary sessions of the European Parliament. A certificate of attendance will be issued at the end of the Summer School. TARGET AUDIENCE The Summer School is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students, including ERASMUS exchange students, solicitors, barristers and other members of the legal professions, civil servants, representatives of NGOs in the human rights sector and all who wish to improve their knowledge of international and European human rights protection. The course will have a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 40 participants. 10 places are reserved for students of the University of Sassari (either Sassari or Nuoro sections). 5
