2 President s Column Katie Kurtz Holiday Greetings! I hope the start of the Holiday Season is treating you all well! I know for me it has already started to get crazy and overwhelming. In the spirit of gratitude, I wanted to take a moment to thank all of our Committee Heads, Board of Trustees, Board of Governors and members of the bar. We have an amazing organization and many of you dedicate your time and energy into making our events successful, educational and fun. Most importantly, I would like to thank Vicki Malara, our Executive Director. She works tirelessly to organize our events, run our meetings and keep us all organized. Thank you, thank you, thank you! We are very grateful for you! We have many events and happenings coming up in the next couple of months that I want to put on your radar. We have two CLE s in December which promise to be enlightening and educational. If you are scrambling to get your last minute CLE s in before the end of the year, or want to learn more about Family Law or Eminent Doman Real Estate, please consider attending one of these events. We are also looking for new Committee Liaisons and Chair s for our various committees. 3 New Grant Allows Parents Access to Child Care During Court in Jefferson County Thanks to the hard work of several people within the Jefferson County legal system, parents and guardians attending court proceedings within the 1 st District won t need to have the added stress of worrying about child care while they take care of legal matters. Earlier this year, the 1 st District Access to Justice Committee, led by Court Administrator Caren Stanley, surveyed our own judicial personnel to monitor the need. Ms. Stanley also reached out to other districts to determine how they handle child care. Committee members learned of statewide programs that provide child care either on site or through vouchers. The team used that information to develop a concept for a voucher program to implement in the 1 st District and applied for a grant to launch a pilot program. In June, the funding request was granted! Great kudos to all involved in preparing the application, primarily Caren Stanley. Through the program, expected to be rolled out shortly, parents will receive vouchers from participating providers when they drop their children off. The voucher will be approved by the court as part of the parents legal case, and the child care provider will be paid through the program. 6 PRO BONO DAY 2015 Thank you to all the attorneys who volunteered their time at the 1 st Judicial District Ask an Attorney Pro Bono Day event on October 29 th. The attorneys assisted 194 pro se litigants looking for legal assistance in the areas of family law, civil law, probate, and traffic/criminal/juvenile matters. Jefferson County Child Support Services also participated. The Ask an Attorney concept continues to grow. Since its inception in 2013, Pro Bono Day and Law Day have drawn 1039 community members to the Jefferson County Courthouse seeking legal assistance. The attorneys have generously donated over 325 hours to these events. It is a great asset to those who cannot afford an attorney. Some of the comments by those who were helped include: I truly appreciate the event because it allowed for personal interaction with an experienced, friendly, knowledgeable and courteous attorney named Kurt. Keep up the good work! Others stated, Kris Ferrell was fantastic! Thank you so much! and I found it very helpful. Thank you for this opportunity!
