We have some good news on the contract fronts, Steve Diot and his team sccessflly completed the contracts for Detroit Thermal and for Hamtramck Energy. Great job. We are crrently at work on the negotiations for THAW and the SOs, and will contine to work on them ntil we have a ratified contract. We will begin negotiations with BHI Energy in December and then the Port Hron Spervisors in Febrary. For many of or members at DTE who work in the Grand Rapids-Kentwood area, there was a major change to their health care with Priority Health being eliminated. To help ease the crossover to a new plan, Recording Secretary John Massengill, DTE Benefits Representative Lorraine Smith, and I went and spent the day ot in Kentwood answering qestions and explaining the healthcare plans available. We met with 50 or so members and I think provided a little relief and eased some of the fears the members may have had. Recently I, along with others, attended a cople of conferences Power4America, hosted by the National Union, and the Inter- Union Gas Conference. At both conferences, we had very good speakers and workshops. To me, the best part of the conferences is talking with the other Union officers. This is when we learn the problems we have encontered are very similar to problems that, for instance, the nions in California or Canada are having. We get to discss the strategies and argments each have sed when presenting or cases. Need a referral for a personal or family crisis? It s also a great time to learn abot contracts and what we have in comparison to what others have, and I can say we re doing pretty good. For example, talking with the Canadian Unions, their negotiations are very different becase health care, per se, is not a topic (bt child care may be). For s, each and every contract, health care is either the first or second topic on the table. With health care not being a topic to negotiate, benefits, wages and contractors are on the top of their list, bt there are more opportnities becase money is not being spent on health care the way it is for s. Bt at the end of the day, mins health care, contractors, overtime, exclsion and mismanagement are often the theme for the day. What s more interesting, if yo talk with retirees, yo ll see these are the same topics they discssed 30 years ago. I will once again contine with my Holiday speech and encorage everyone to take some time off, and enjoy these holidays with yor friends and family. Start some new traditions, connect with some old friends, bt most of all, relax and enjoy the frits of yor labor. It s been a long year and a lot of hors were worked by all. 3 U W U A L O C A L Vice President s Report According to the dictionary, a labor nion is defined as an organized association of workers, often in a trade or profession, formed to protect and frther their rights and interests, and nionism is defined as the policies and practices of labor nions, particlarly those concerned with protecting and frthering the rights of workers. As members of the Union, however, we all know that there s a lot more to it than that. The natre of nionism becomes especially clear by TIM COX timcox@local223wa.org Unionism and the Holiday Spirit arond this time of year, when the holiday spirit is very mch alive. As a Labor Union Representative, I can acknowledge that the holidays bring s together as a whole, so we can contine to give back to the commnity which we serve. This brings s to the qestion, What is the holiday spirit, and how does that tie into or roles as members of the Union? Typically, the holiday spirit can be broken down into three characteristics: giving, gratitde, and grace. The beaty of the holiday spirit is that these three characteristics are abot more than jst material items. Often, holiday spirit and the natre of nionism can be shown more throgh or actions and words rather than the tangible items yo may bring. Giving doesn t have to take place in the form of presents nder a tree. In many cases, yo can give to someone by simply being there for them. Gratitde can be shown throgh sincerity and throgh being genine. Grace is the most ncommon characteristic to be shown in the holiday spirit; however, it can, indeed, be shown by opening yorself p to awareness and nity. Yo may be able to see how these characteristics work directly and clearly alongside or precios roles as members of the Union. As a Union, we are constantly and consistently working to be involved in or commnity. In fact, commnity involvement is one of the core principles that drives or existence and prpose. As a Union, we are always in the holiday spirit the spirit of giving, gratitde, and grace. Even when the holidays have passed, we contine to show the characteristics of the holiday spirit each and every day throgh or involvement. We protect the members of or commnity and provide them with a better work environment, which, in trn, provides them with a better life. We recognize the many things that or commnity does for s, and we aim to give that back to them tenfold. As a Union, we are always in the holiday spirit. We will always be in the spirit of giving, gratitde, and grace; as this shows the very natre of or prpose as a commnity. A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to All. 5 U W U A L O C A L treasrer s Perspective by JUANITA ray janitaray@local223wa.org Giving Thanks and Giving Back is at the Core of Local 223 As Treasrer of the Local 223 UWUA, I ve seen a tremendos amont of great work accomplished this year. It s refreshing to see dedication, hard work and commitment pt into action year after year and 2017 has been no different. Now, as we embark pon the holidays and the beginning of a new year, it s a wonderfl time to be gratefl. Giving thanks certainly seems to come easily arond the holidays, doesn t it? We gather with friends and family and inwardly and otwardly note how lcky we are to have sch blessings in or lives. We can cont those loved ones, or jobs, homes and good health among the many blessings for which we can be gratefl for. We at Local 223 also take into consideration those in or commnity who may need a bit of extra help and cheer dring the holidays. In the past, we have worked on projects to give back, and I encorage s all to take a moment to ask how we might pay it forward this holiday season for someone in need. What can we do, individally and as a grop, to share more of who we are to brighten someone else s day or holidays? Can we volnteer, give gifts to a family in need, pay someone s tility bill? What ideas can we come p with to simply bring happiness to others and give back to or commnities in some way? And don t get me wrong. I completely nderstand that this time of year can already be filled with so mch activity and stress that it s hard to keep everything straight, bt I garantee that if we find ways to give back, or lives will all be that mch more enriched than they already are as a reslt. Thank yo for all yor hard work this year and may yo and yors have a beatifl and joyos holiday season. 7 U W U A L O C A L GAS DIVISION report by cynthia ireland Looking Back on a Bsy Year Three years ago, in November of 2014, the Gas Division elected a new team of officers Chairman Tom Banks, Vice Chairman Rdy Cianfarani, Chief Steward Tim Cox, Recording Secretary Alicia Dennis, and Treasrer Cynthia Ireland. These Officers were sworn in and took office in Janary Since then, there have been many changes in the Gas Division team. Rich Harkins stepped down as Local Vice President and Tim Cox was elected to the Vice President s position. The team made the decision to take advantage of Rich Harkins many years as an officer and his knowledge of the contract. Rich was appointed as or new Chief Steward ntil his retirement this past April. When Rich retired, Chris Jones was appointed as Chief Steward to the Gas Division. The next change that we had was when Alicia Dennis resigned and took a new position with United Way. At that time, Todd Mihalyfi was appointed to the Recording Secretary positon. That s a lot of changes for the Gas Division! In the three years with all the changes in Officers, or Chairman, Tom Banks, led the team throgh many challenges. The team still hosted many charitable events, raising over a qarter of a million dollars in the last 3 years. In March of 2015, 2016 and 2017, the team started ot with the Annal Bowling Event for THAW and moving on to the first week of Jne, motorcycle riders from the Union Hall, Allen Road ICM, WCB, Michigan Avene Service Center, Coolidge Service Center & Lynch Road Service Center met in the Upper Peninslas to spport or veterans by participating in an Annal Motorcycle Ride for Michigan Bikers Helping Veterans. Tom Banks, Cindy Ireland and Rich Harkins pt on the 6th Annal Motorcycle Ride for MBHV again this smmer, starting and ending in Hell, Michigan. This year, we were able to raise $6,000 for or veterans. Agst is a bsy month for this team, as we hosted a BBQ for everyone to attend and spport the Goodfellows Dress the Doll fnd. For the past three years, the Gas Division has dressed 100 dolls each year to spport the Goodfellows, all while in the planning process of the Birdie Fore Warmth Golf Oting. This year was the 20th Anniversary for the Gas Division hosting the Birdie Fore Warmth. We are all prod that this year s oting raised $86,400, which will help in keeping families warm dring the harsh winter months. The first weekend in October, we all look forward to getting together with fellow nion members, as well as management, for the Annal Golf Challenge in Honor of Tom contined on following page 8 l o c a l a n n n c i a t o r NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2017

8 contined from previos page Isaac. This year, the oting was moved to Fellows Creek with great sccess in spporting The Pink Fnd. Besides ptting on the many charitable events, the officers worked long hors on contract negotiations and spported or Local officers in attending all of the contract roll-ot meetings. On March 4-5, 2016, Local 223 and the Gas Division hosted the All Unions meeting at the, welcoming Officers from Locals 70, 132 and 799. In 2017, all the Officers met again in Okemos, which was hosted by Local 799. These meetings proved to be very prodctive, with or Unions coming together in solidarity. With many of or members moving into the next phase of their lives with retirement, this team worked at honoring or retirees. Or members who retired in 2016 were invited to the Union Hall for dinner, where the Gas Division Officers presented them with their Union plaqe. In 2017, nearly 40 invitations were sent ot to retirees, inviting them to Dinner with the Union Officers at Roman Village in Dearborn. All who attended were presented with their Union plaqe and those nable to attend will receive their plaqe in the mail. The Local 223 Gas Division Officers wish all of or retirees a sincere congratlations on their retirement. The last events of 2017 is where we will say goodbye to Chairman Tom Banks and Vice Chairman Rdy Cianfarani, as they are looking at retirement. Congratlations to Chairman-elect Marc Little, Vice Chairman-elect Ignatis Brennan, and Chief Stewardelect Chris Jones. The election for Treasrer and Recording Secretary will be determined on November 27, with the conting of the ballots. 9 UWUA Local 223 s Anti-Discrimination Policy and Procedre Every member of Local 223 has a dty not to engage in any form of nlawfl discrimination. One of the main constittional objectives of or National Union is to nite all workers in or Union regardless of race, creed, color, sex, or national origin. Local 223 s By-Laws reqire every member to pledge to never discriminate against a fellow worker becase of race, creed, color, sex, age or national origin. The Local 223/DTE Energy contract prohibits discrimination based on race, creed, color sex, age or national origin. Law also prohibits discrimination based on disability. If any member or person represented by Local 223 believes she/he is a victim of prohibited discrimination at work (which cold inclde verbal, physical, or written harassment), the Union is available to assist in the resoltion of her/his complaint. The Union is here to represent employees. If yo believe that yo are experiencing discrimination based on race, creed, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability (inclding harassment), yo shold commnicate yor complaint to yor Local 223 Steward. The grievance procedre of the Local 223/DTE Energy contract is one method by which an employee can resolve a complaint regarding prohibited discrimination. Every employee also has the right to prse any claim she/he may have against any individal of the Company with the appropriate governmental agency or throgh private litigation. If yo feel that a Union Steward or a Local 223 official is part of yor complaint or is ignoring yor complaint, it is important that yo notify one of Local 223 s Hman Rights MARC LITTLE Phone (313) representatives: Any violation of or Union s policy against discrimination is condct nbecoming a Union member nder Local 223 s By-Laws. Local 223 s Hman Rights representatives are responsible for responding to member/ employee complaints abot Stewards or Union officials who engage in prohibited discrimination or who ignore a complaint abot prohibited discrimination. Local 223 believes that it has excellent Stewards and Local officials. However, if yo have a complaint that a Steward or a Local official has engaged in prohibited discrimination, or is ignoring a complaint abot prohibited discrimination, Local 223 is ready and willing to investigate and remedy sch complaint. Local 223 s Hman Rights representatives have the athority to initiate appropriate action against Union officials who violate or policy against discrimination, inclding the ability to file internal Union charges, which can reslt in removal from office. We rge all members of Local 223 to work with the Union to eradicate discrimination in the workplace. Local 223 UWUA stands in solidarity against all forms of nlawfl discrimination and harassment. PRESIDENT VICE PRESIDENT RECORDING SECRETARY TREASURER Three (3) TRUSTEES DATE: TUESday, Janary 9, 2018 TIME: 5:30 p.m. PLACE: UWUA Local 223 Union Hall Commerce Drive N., Dearborn, MI (313) Article Vi: Election of Local Officers and Trstees Section 1.a. All Officers and Trstees of the Union shall be elected by the membership with each member in good standing eligible to cast one (1) vote. All elections shall be condcted by secret ballot. b. All Officers and Trstees of the Local Union shall serve for a period of three years starting at the March General Concil meeting, or ntil sccessors have been elected and installed in office. Section 2.a. A nomination meeting shall be schedled dring the first fifteen (15) days of Janary in an election year. The members attending this meeting will constitte a legal qorm to receive nominations for Local Union Officers and Trstees for the ensing term. A notice of this meeting shall be sent by mail to each member s last known home address at least fifteen (15) days prior to the meeting. Acceptance of nominations for Local Officers and Trstees mst be made by certified or registered mail and mst be in the hands of the Election Committee five (5) days after the date of nomination exclding all days dring which there are no schedled postal deliveries or in writing the night of the nominations and given to the Election Committee Chairperson or their designated representative. The nominee mst do this in person. Within five (5) days thereafter, the Election Committee shall proceed to condct an election of these candidates. All elections for Local Union Officers shall be condcted by United States mail. Those candidates (except Trstees) receiving the majority of the votes cast shall be elected. If no one receives a majority of the votes cast, there shall be a rn-off election held within twenty-one (21) days of the election, between the two (2) candidates receiving the highest nmber of votes for the respective office. b. Only candidates who have accepted nomination, as provided in Section 2.a. of this Article shall have their names appear on the ballot. Write-in candidate s votes will not be accepted. c. Candidates for the office of Trstee will be elected by a plrality of the votes cast. Only one (1) Trstee may be elected from any one Division. A candidate for Trstee cannot be a member of the Exective Board.
