Staff Sergeant George Caron, the tail gunner, described what he saw: "The mushroom cloud itself was a spectacular sight, a bubbling mass of purple-gray smoke and you could see it had a red core in it and everything was burning inside.... It looked like lava or molasses covering a whole city...." The cloud is estimated to have reached a height of 40,000 feet.

City was of some industrial and military significance. The city was a communications center, a storage point, and an assembly area for Japanese military. It was one of several Japanese cities left deliberately untouched by American bombing, allowing a pristine environment to measure the damage caused by the atomic bomb. It was reported that Hiroshima was the only targeted city without prisoner of war (POW) camps, causing Washington decided to assign it highest priority

A dense column of smoke rises more than 60,000 feet into the air over the Japanese port of Nagasaki, the result of an atomic bomb, the second ever used in warfare, dropped on the industrial center August 8, 1945, from a U.S. B-29 Superfortress. (August 9, 1945)
