1 Minutes of the WAHVM General Assembly Meeting 2006 Sunday, 24 th September 2006, hours Main Hall, Facultad de Veterinaria, University of León, Campus de Vegazana s/n, León, 1. The President, Prof. G. Forstenpointner, opened the meeting with a warm welcome to the members present. The Board and Liaison Committee of the WAHVM met on Thursday, 21 st September 2006, for general discussions and preparation of this General Assembly Meeting. 2. The proposed agenda for the meeting was adopted. The President confirmed that the number of voting rights present allowed to take the necessary decisions. It was decided that non-members of the WAHVM were allowed to attend the meeting. Dr. P. Paulsen was unable to attend this congress and the meetings and sent his regards. The Honorary President of the WAHVM, Prof. Dr. E.-H. Lochmann, reported on the meeting of the Turkish Society held in March 2006 in Elazig () which he attended. 3. The minutes of the General Assembly Meeting held on Saturday 16 th July 2005 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Minneapolis, USA, were adopted and ratified by the President and Secretary. 4. The WAHVM Annual Report 2005 was adopted. 5. The WAHVM Financial Report 2005 was presented and discussed. Dr. P. Leeflang remarked that not all Societies had paid. 6. The General Assembly Meeting endorsed the cash auditing report 2005 by Dr. Ch. Mache and Dr. J. B. Berns and exonerated the Treasurer and the Board from their financial responsibilities for the year Election of the cash auditing committee The present members of the cash auditing committee, Dr. Ch. Mache (Austria) and Dr. J. B. Berns (The Netherlands), were re-elected.

The Board suggested to keep the various subscription rates for 2007 unchanged: National Societies US$ 5.00 per full member, National Societies in Europe 4.00 per full member, Individual members US$ or 15.00, Veterinary Schools US$ or , Veterinary Libraries US$ or 80.00, Veterinary Museums US$ or This proposal was adopted. 9. The proposed budget for the years 2007 and 2008 was discussed and adopted. The costs for the Young Scholars Award were moved from 2007 to Membership list on 31 st December 2005: - 13 National Societies, representing 912 members Individual Members, representing 33 countries. - 9 Associate Members. During this year s Congress the number of individual members increased to 101 and the WAHVM is now represented in 34 countries. 11. The Cheiron Award 2006 will be presented to Dr. Vicente Dualde Perez, Valencia,. The Board is expecting a proposal from the Swiss Society for the Cheiron Award According to the discussions and decisions in the Joint Meeting of the Board and Liaison Committee of the WAHVM the Young Scholars Award 2006 is presented to Dr. Abigail Woods (UK). The call for applicants for the Young Scholars Award 2008 will be announced broadly in different media and through the internet. Applicants must not be older than 38 years. Deadline for submission is December 31 st, The submitted papers will be reviewed by a jury until March 31 st, The prize will be awarded at the 38 th Congress of the WAHVM in Engelberg (Switzerland). 13. Following future International Congresses of the WAHVM are planned: - 38 th Congress, Engelberg, Switzerland, th Congress, Istanbul or Antalya,, th Congress, The Netherlands, The Dutch Veterinary Association will celebrate its 50 th anniversary in st Congress, Egypt, 2014.

3 14. The congress theme for Switzerland is: The man-animal-relationship from antiquity until the 20 th century. The President expressed thanks to Dr. M. Becker and his team for organizing the 38 th Congress. Prof. Dr. S. Jones, Dr. A. Woods, Dr. J. Broberg and Prof. P. Koolmees gave to understand that if women will not be allowed to visit the library of the Engelberg monastery another venue should be chosen. 15. Reports by the various WAHVM working groups: - Veterinary Museums: The Museum in Minneapolis will expand. All museums should be linked to the homepage of the WAHVM. - Veterinary education and curriculum development: The handbook of Veterinary History edited by P. Koolmees, J. Schäffer and S. Jones will be published as a booklet in International Dictionary of Veterinary Biography: Drs. A. H. H. M. Mathijsen reported that the progress is very slow and that large countries are still underrepresented. By the end of 2006 the total number of biographies is 371. Furthermore, historical and other societies should be contacted. - Retrospective bibliography: The database is linked to the WAHVM website. It is important to know that not all papers are covered by the - nevertheless - large database. - Veterinary hippocratic oath: According to last year s GA Meeting a working group consisting of philologists and specialists in veterinary ethics should be established. The Board is still in search for volunteers. - The WAHVM Homepage ( remains on the Utrecht-server. One day it should be reconstructed. All relevant information should be sent to the WAHVM webmaster atj.prak@uu.nl 16. Composition of the Board: Prof. Dr. F. Rojo () stepped down after his 1 year term according to article 9.3 of the Constitution. Dr. M. Becker (Germany) was elected according to the Constitution. Dr. J. Blancou (France) is new Board Member of the WAHVM. Changes within the Constitution: Following changes within Article 9 of the Constitution have to be made (changes are underlined):

4 9.1 The Board shall consist of a maximum of eight members. The Board is the executive and administrative organ of the Association and shall consist of: The President; The Vice/Incoming President; The Past President; The Secretary/Treasurer; One or two Board members; Representative of the country hosting the next Congress/GA Meeting (see 9.3). 9.4 The former President may be elected by the General Assembly as Past President for a four years term. The suggested changes were adopted. 18. World Veterinary Association History Project: Dr. Christa Mache (Austria) made a first report following her visit of the WVA Central Archive in Copenhagen. Before any decision on further procedures can be made the WVA has to be asked how much money they are willing to spend. The President will get into contact with the WVA again. 20. Although Dr. I. Katic will retire, it was assumed that the good cooperation between WAHVM and Historia Medicinae Veterinariae will be continued. 21. Reports by the National Societies:

5 Reports from Egypt, Norway and had been received. The President asked the representatives of the National Societies that reports and updates should be sent regularly and electronically to the Board (Secretary) and/or to the webmaster of the WAHVM. 22. The Honorary Membership of the WAHVM was conferred on Dr. Paul Leeflang (The Netherlands), long-term secretary and/or treasurer of the WAHVM. Dr. Paul Leeflang thanked the Board and all members of the WAHVM. 23. The President closed the meeting with a vote of thanks to the members present for their contributions and patience during the GA Meeting.
