According to the American Cancer Society, the biggest barrier to completing clinical trials is that not enough people take part in them. As proposed, the new rule, 111(d), would provide the states with the flexibility to comply with the requirements, and though the rule is still being finalized, compliance is expected by This panel will comment on how this ruling affects different sectors of industry and provide legislators with resources to stay aware of how their state is adjusting. 7 9:00 am 9:45 am Foster Care Alternatives Facilitated by: Representative Linda Chapa LaVia Illinois State Legislature Andrew Brown, JD Senior Fellow The Foundation for Government Accountability Frequently, foster kids entering the system because of short-term crisis, often for minor infractions, that lead to neglect and abuse down the road because the families are overwhelmed. Safe Families for Children is an organization solely focused on preventing kids from entering foster care, and this session will focus on alternative options to traditional foster care. 9:45 am 10:30 am Major Issues of Water Quantity & Water Quality in the Midwest Facilitated by: Senator Carolyn McGinn Burke Griggs, PhD Assistant Attorney General, State of Kansas Fellow, Woods Institute for the Environment, Stanford University This session will provide a survey of the most prominent issues relating to water supplies and water quality regulations across the Midwest, with specific attention to conflicts over interstate river and groundwater basins and the Waters of the United States regulatory rule recently promulgated by EPA and the Corps of Engineers pursuant to the federal Clean Water Act. 10:30 am 10:40 am Diabetes Education & Awareness Facilitated by: Representative Kathy Hawken Immediate Past Chair, Women In Government Board of Directors North Dakota State Legislature Diabetes education for those living with the disease is incredibly important, and coordinating health department efforts is a great way for legislators to improve diabetes care in their state. 10:40 am 10:55 am HPV A Continuing Issue Facilitated by: Brenna Kehew Sculley Associate Director of Policy & Programs Women In Government Board of Directors Kansas has the lowest rates of HPV vaccinations in the country; this session will highlight the ways legislators can get involved, and view or host screenings of the new documentary, Someone You Love; The HPV Epidemic.
