1 LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON L I B R A R Y & M U S E U M December 1991 (updated September 2013) CO 1-8 MATERIALS AT THE LBJ LIBRARY PERTAINING TO LATIN AMERICA AND THE WEST INDIES INTRODUCTION This list includes the principal files in the Johnson Library that contain material on the countries of South and Central America and the islands of the West Indies. The list is not definitive, however, and researchers should consult with the Library's archivists about other potentially useful files. See also the guide entitled "Foreign Aid, Food for Peace and Third World Economic Development (Asia, Africa, and Latin America)"(CO 1-8, CO 121, FG 105-4, FO 3, FO 3-2, IT 80, PC 2). Researchers may also want to consult the Foreign Relations of the United States series before conducting research at the Johnson Library. This multi-volume documentary history is the official record of U.S. diplomatic activity. The volumes contain many documents from the holdings of the Johnson Library. The published volumes are available on-line at the State Department s web site at and you can also reach that site through the Related Links section of the Johnson Library web site ( under the Research button. Bound volumes may be available at any major university or public library. Unless otherwise noted, the files listed below have been processed, and the unclassified and declassified material has been opened for research. Consult the finding aids for each collection for more information. NATIONAL SECURITY FILE (NSF) This file was the working file of President Johnson's special assistants for national security affairs, McGeorge Bundy and Walt W. Rostow. Documents in the file originated in the offices of Bundy and Rostow and their staffs, in the various executive departments and agencies, especially those having to do with foreign affairs and national defense, and in diplomatic and military posts around the world. Approximately 90% of the National Security File has been processed and is available for research. Consult the finding aid in the reading room or borrow a copy through interlibrary loan by writing to the Supervisory Archivist, LBJ Library, 2313 Red River Street, Austin, Texas Some parts of the finding aid, including the finding aid for the Country File, are available on the Johnson Library s web site. Those folders whose titles are preceded by an "X" or a date have been processed and their contents declassified in whole or in part. Lists of classified documents have been placed in those folders, and you may request mandatory declassification review of individual documents which have not yet been declassified in full. Those folders not preceded by an "X" or a date are unprocessed and are not subject to mandatory declassification review. Consult with a member of the staff on the processing schedule.
