Down by the River April 26-28, 2019 As the trees lay bare of any leaves and the ground hardens in the frigid temperatures, it s hard to think about flowers blooming, birds chirping, and strolling along the beautiful Ohio River in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Think about it! Just a few months from now, Indiana DKG members will indeed gather to celebrate our long, treasured history at the Doubletree Inn. Make your reservation now to join us! A year ago, Council 13 began working to create an enjoyable, educational, and entertaining weekend for all members. Now it s up to you: join us and make April 27 and 28 memorable. Although there are no set tours, there are interesting places galore for you to visit. Information will be available on Thursday night and Friday morning about these opportunities. Why not take an extra day or two to enjoy the sites you may never have known existed? Seize the day! Of course, there will be meetings and workshops on Saturday as well as delicious meals and a poster exhibit of special projects and activities. A local men s group, Safe in the Harbor, will entertain us at our birthday luncheon, and our own Indiana chorus will sing for the installation of the new state officers. Motivational speakers Mike and Kim Pinto will challenge us. Sunday s Ceremony of Remembrance honors our sisters who have passed away. At breakfast our International guest Becky Sadowski will come to the podium, and Golden Key chapters and Women of Distinction will be recognized. This doesn t need to be part of your imagination it can be real. All you need to do is register for the state convention to be held in Lawrenceburg on April Council 13 has been offering invitations for nearly two years now. The event is nearly a reality with only a few finishing touches needed. It is official now that International 1 st Vice President Becky Sadowski will be our International visitor. She will speak to the members as well as conduct two workshops, one for treasurers and one for presidents. However, she is not the only big name to appear. We also will have Mike and Kim Pinto, who will be our keynote speakers. If you missed the Janet O Neal Leadership Seminar, you missed a great program from them. For the convention, their presentation will be entitled Let s Build Sandcastles Together. They will challenge us with What little tweaks can you make in your world not only to change the world for the better, but also to inspire others to do the same? In this issue of, Stephanie Walsh has published the workshop presenters and topics. After looking through them, you may have a difficult time deciding the two you want to attend. Don t forget that you have another choice: an art project field trip. If you register for this special workshop, you will go home with a beautiful fused glass suncatcher. The workshop does cost an additional $18, but you will have a very nice product to show for your morning adventure. Some of you may think the convention is only for the chapter president. That is a fallacy that I want to squelch. The convention is for everyone. Attending a state convention can help you understand the meaning behind your membership. Sure, there is business that we must deal with, but the fellowship among our members is priceless. Some of you will only want to come for Saturday, but Sunday is a great day to be in attendance. The day starts off with one of the most beautiful traditions that the Society has: The Ceremony of Remembrance. It is the first activity of the day, but it is well worth attending. Afterwards, we will have the brunch and recognition of Women of Distinction; scholarship, minigrant, and travel study recipients; and the Golden Key Chapter Awards. If you haven t registered yet, please do so. Registration forms are available on the state website, from your chapter president, or from me. Come Friday night. We might even have a euchre game going on. The hotel is beautiful, and the rooms are reasonably priced. The convention center is just a few years old, and with the exception of the art project field trip, everything is on one level of the venue. Hollywood Casino is nearby if you would like to try your hand at chance. Lawrenceburg is located in southeast Indiana, but it is easy to get to. The town is not very large either; therefore, you don t need to worry about traffic. I think if you have never been to Lawrenceburg, you will be pleasantly surprised. Here is something to remember: If you can t find anyone to attend the convention with, don t worry. Come anyway. Enough ladies will be in attendance to make you feel welcomed. Here is something else to remember: I really, really want you there. Please don t let me down.

3 Inspire Change March Honor Your Members, Build Membership Now, What? Marsha Daugherty, Mu Chapter One might wonder how honoring your own members could possibly lead to building the membership of your chapter. For us, it was just about that simple. When we started honoring three or four members each meeting, our membership started to grow. Are you still wondering why? The members of our chapter are proud of DKG again. As the honorees tell their stories, the rest of us learn just what makes a sister in Delta Kappa Gamma so very special. It is amazing where we have been and what we have accomplished! As I look back, not only have we gained new members, but our attendance at meetings has grown; we send more people to state and international functions; and we have found a new pride in our organization that makes us want to share the good news of being a member of DKG. It seems like we enjoy our meetings more, because we have worked hard to make them more interesting and fun. I would like to encourage each chapter to do three things: Plan meetings that your membership won t want to miss. It shouldn t be all business. Find some way to get your own members to meetings. Appoint a Membership Chairperson that knows how to encourage members to promote DKG and is passionate about it. If we try these things, I really feel like we will see our membership increase all over the state. Ladies, it is time. Here s to increased membership for our organization!
