1 RHODE ISLAND Quarterly NAIFA-RI OCTOBER Board & Officers PRESIDENT Michael D. Carano NAIFA Annual Conference Report San Antonio, Texas VICE PRESIDENT Jonathan P. Matrullo, MBA, LUTCF SECRETARY Brian Falconer, LUTCF IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT Bryan D. Becotte STATE NATIONAL COMMITTEEMAN John N. Peacock, Jr., CFP LOCAL NATIONAL COMMITTEEMAN W. Robert Kalander, Jr., CLU, ChFC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Mark A. Male BOARD MEMBERS Brian Falconer, LUTCF Janice A. Kaplan, CLTC Maura R. Laudone, CLTC David B. Lea, III Gene Nadeau, MS, LUTCF Raphael Paola, III, LTCP Jordan P. Pavlides, LUTCF NAIFA-RI 2400 Post Rd., Warwick, RI Telephone: Facsimile: The 124th Annual NAIFA Conference was held in San Antonio, Texas in late September and was attended by five NAIFA-RI members in addition to the executive director. NAIFA-RI President Michael Carano, along with State National Committeeman Jack Peacock, Vice President Jonathan Matrullo, Board Member Gene Nadeau and Member John Howard all participated in the annual event. The National Delegate Council met and voted on a number of matters including the election of new Trustees and a new Secretary (keep reading for more details). National Council Defeats Dues Increase Proposal; YAT Now Standing Committee At a well attended National Delegate Council meeting (over 900 attendees) on Tuesday, October 1, the council defeated a motion to increase national dues by $25 to help fund the Annual Legislative Conference to be held in the spring each year going forward. After an extremely successful legislative conference this past April, NAIFA will continue to schedule an annual legislative conference to maintain important ties to Congress as they continue to look at life insurance and annuities as potential new tax sources. While the motion garnered 62% support of the attendees, a 67% favorable vote was required to pass the motion. On a separate matter, a motion to amend the bylaws to establish the Young Advisors Team (YAT) as a standing committee received resounding support during the council meeting. It was generally felt the acknowledgment of YATs as an essential part of the future of the industry and association was best addressed by making YAT a standing committee. Massachusetts Agent Elected NAIFA Secretary Your NAIFA-RI attendees to the 124th Annual NAIFA Conference were on hand to provide moral and campaign support for Jules Gaudreau s candidacy for NAIFA Secretary. Jules ran for the seat in 2011 in Washington, DC, and lost by the smallest of margins. He ran against Paul Dougherty of Maryland, a sitting NAIFA Trustee, in a professional and dignified contest. Many said there would be no loser regardless of the victor. In the end, after a rigorous campaign, Jules was elected as the next NAIFA Secretary. He will become President in 2015 at the New Orleans Conference. Jules attended his first NAIFA Board meeting the day following his election and he intends to focus on the biggest challenge throughout the federation, membership.

2 NAIFA ANNUAL CONFERENCE REPORT NAIFA-RI ATTENDEES AT NAIFA NATIONAL CONFERENCE Rhode Island National Conference attendees at the National Delegate Council meeting - where Jules Gaudreau from Massachusetts was elected NAIFA Secretary - were (left to right): NAIFA-RI member John Howard (West Greenwich), State National Committeeman Jack Peacock (Cranston), Executive Director Mark Male, President Michael Carano (Cranston), Vice President Jonathan Matrullo (Providence), and Board member Gene Nadeau (Cranston). SERVING UP THE BISQUE NAIFA-RI Vice President Jonathan Matrullo and NAIFA-RI President Michael Carano saddle up with aprons in preparation to serve the New England Forum Lobster Bisque to hundreds of NAIFA Annual Conference attendees in San Antonio. NAIFA-RI Participates in Annual New England Forum Lobster Bisque Reception Each year the New England Forum - a group comprised of NAIFA State Associations from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Rhode Island - organize a lobster bisque for attendees of the NAIFA National Conference. The event, sponsored by State Farm, attracts attendees from all over the country for a taste of New England. The Forum remains one of the only groups that still meets to discuss national agenda items and to promote worthy candidates for national office. The current president of the Forum is none other than our State National Committeeman, Jack Peacock. Jack's term as the New England Forum president is for two years and he is starting his second year in office. NAIFA-RI serves as the administrator of the Forum. IMPORTANT MEMBER MESSAGE NAIFA-RI is changing its phone number! 2 EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY All inquiries can be directed to:

3 NAIFA-Rhode Island Membership Milestones With this issue and periodically in future newsletters, we will highlight NAIFA-RI members who have reached membership milestones. In this NAIFA-RI Quarterly, we recap all those members since January 1, 2013 who have celebrated an anniversary. 5 Years Louis Coppolino James Kershaw Calab Neves Harold Daigneau Jonathan Matrullo Tiney Singler Jeffrey Dyson Dean Morra Mark Swistak 10 Years Richard Fensterer 20 Years Thomas Rolin 25 Years Arthur Colello Janice Kaplan J Rockne Starks 30 Years Daniel Andrews Normand St Laurent 35 Years Jeffrey Allison Jeffrey Brown William Maloney 40 Years Michael Fox Bob Kalander 45 Years Lawrence Halperin (IMPORTANT NOTE: If membership is dropped & then reinstated, the reinstate date becomes the new start date.) NAIFA-RI YAT Recognized as Top Membership Recruiter Our very own Jonathan Matrullo, MBA, LUTCF, has been recognized as one of two top member recruiters for NAIFA. Jon shares the recognition with Ben Harding, also a YAT from Massachusetts. Jon sits on the NAIFA-RI Board as Vice President and also serves as the Membership Chair. He participates in IFAPAC and is a driving force not only for membership, but also a huge advocate of NAIFA in general. "When you consider the advocacy done by NAIFA, especially at the federal level, it amazes me that every eligible member doesn't support the organization. I feel that without NAIFA's involvement in DC, our very livelihoods would have changed dramatically and even more so for our clients. Protecting against the taxation of cash build up alone should compel every licensed life producer to join," he said. NAIFA-RI Mission Statement The mission of NAIFA - Rhode Island is to improve the business environment, enhance professionalism, promote high ethical standards and provide a positive public image of our membership who assist the public to achieve financial security. 3

RE: Election as NAIFA Secretary Dear Jules: Please accept this letter as Rhode Island s official congratulations on your election as Secretary of NAIFA. Your campaign was both professional and well managed. Scott Mullen did a masterful job as your campaign manager and we know Linda Surovick did a superb job as well. To the extent that we were able to contribute in support of your campaign both financially (albeit a small contribution) and physically, we are pleased to be a part of your election. Please let us know if we can be of any service or assistance to you as you quickly ramp up your role in the leadership of NAIFA. Again, on behalf of the Board and members of NAIFA Rhode Island, CONGRATULATIONS! Sincerely, 5
