1 A publication of Michigan Cemetery Association United Cemeteries of Michigan November ELECTION UPDATE Barb Farrah, Governmental Consultant Services Inc. It s finally over, and as you know, there will be a dramatic change in the Legislature and Executive Office come January For days leading up to November 2, the news was filled with predictions of significant Republican gains in this off-year election both at the state and federal level. The only question was - how big? Now we know. The Republicans swept the statewide offices gaining four seats in the State Senate for a super majority of 26 seats. The most dramatic change occurred in the State House where the Republicans won virtually all of the contested open seats and defeated nine incumbents to take over with a strong majority. We will have a new Governor, Lt. Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, 61 new members in the House of Representatives and 29 new State Senators. Now that the election is over, the real work begins. Term limits injects a high degree of uncertainty into the political process... making the building of meaningful relationships with legislators more critical than ever. I am hopeful that each MCA member has or will call their elected official to say congratulations and let them know that we are here to help on all matters pertaining to the death care industry - they will be happy to receive your call! There are a number of new faces headed to Lansing and with the changes in elected leadership, appointed positions and legislative caucus membership, we have a terrific new opportunity to get to know and educate these policy makers on the importance of the death care industry in Michigan. As a true believer in the philosophy that change brings about opportunity - the state of Michigan, in 2011, will surely be full of opportunity! Let s all work together to make sure we cover all the members of our legislature as well as our new Governor, Attorney General and Secretary of State to let them know that MCA is present and standing ready to help them make a better future for Michigan. Look forward to seeing you at the February 15th Legislative Luncheon! House and Senate Elect Leadership Positions Representative James Bolger, Speaker of the House of Representatives Representative John Walsh, Speaker Pro Tempore Representative Jim Stamas, Majority Floor Leader Representative Rick Hammel, Minority Leader Representative Kate Segal, Minority Floor Leader ~ Senator Randy Richardville, Majority Leader Senator-Elect Arlan Meekhof, Majority Floor Leader Senator-Elect Tonya Schuitmaker, Senate President Pro Tem Senator Gretchen Whitmer, Minority Leader Senator Tupac Hunter, Minority Floor Leader
