3 Michigan Legislative Session Legislative Session takes place Tuesday through Thursday Often following a typical school year calendar Session is viewable online via the Michigan Legislature website Session is open to the public Session is led by the House Speaker and the Senate Majority Leader
4 Current make up of the Michigan House of Representatives 63 Republican 45 Democrat
5 Michigan House of Representatives 110 members Seats in the House of Representatives are up for election every 2 years Some Representatives cannot run for re election due to term limits Currently, 9 Democrats and 11 Republicans in the House cannot seek re election Some Representatives are not running for re election in the House by giving up their eligibility, but instead running for a Senate seat There are 29 House committees plus appropriations sub committees Some committees meet every week when the House is in session. Others almost never meet. The ratio of Republicans to Democrats on Committees mirrors the ratio of party affiliation in total Last House Election: November 2016 Next House Election: November 2018

9 Michigan Senate 32 members Seats in the Senate are up for election every 4 years Some Senators cannot run for re election due to term limits Currently, 7 Democrats and 19 Republicans in the Senate cannot run for re election Some Senators (incumbent) are not running for re election due to early retirement, other office possibilities, etc. There are 32 Senate committees. Some meet every week that Session is in, some almost NEVER meet. Last Senate Election: November 2014 Next Senate Election: November 2018

12 Term Limits Currently, 15 states have legislative term limits In Ohio, House members can serve four 2 year terms and Senate members can serve two 4 year terms In California, legislators can serve 12 years (a life time limit): split between House and Senate, all in House, or all in Senate In Arkansas, legislators can serve 16 years (a lifetime limit): split between House and Senate, all in House, or all in Senate Michigan has the most draconian state legislative term limits in the country
