2018 Michigan State Senate Race September 2017 This is a preliminary report on the 2018 Michigan State Senate races. It includes filed and prospective candidates from each of the 38 Senate districts along with district maps and current Senators. The information in this document is taken from multiple sources. Updates will be made as Senate races progress. If you have any questions or comments please contact us at Public Affairs Associates.
1 1 st District Current Senator: Coleman A. Young, Jr. (D-Detroit), (term-limited) Rep. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit) Nicholas Rivera (D), Admissions Counselor at Wayne State University Rep. Bettie Cook Scott (D-Detroit) Former Rep. Alberta Tinsley-Talabi (D-Detroit) Former Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit). Rep. Tlaib s run is a possibility, but with Chang in the race it s questionable. Rico Razo, Mayor Mike Duggan s re-election campaign manager Denis Boismier, Gibraltar City Council President. Although Boismier is running for Gibraltar mayor this year, he may possibly join the race if the field becomes heavily saturated with Detroit candidates.
2 2 nd District Current Senator: Bert Johnson (D-Highland Park), (term-limited) Tommy Campbell (D-Grosse Pointe) Rep. Brian Banks (D-Harper Woods) Adam Hollier, former aide to Sen. Johnson Former Rep. Lamar Lemmons (D-Detroit) Former Rep. John Olumba (D-Detroit)
3 3 rd District Current Senator: Morris Hood III (D-Detroit), (term-limited) N/A Rep. Sylvia Santana (D-Detroit) Former Rep. Harvey Santana (D-Detroit) Former Rep. David Nathan (D-Detroit) Former Rep. Gary Woronchak (R-Dearborn), current Wayne County Commission Chair
4 4 th District Current Senator: Ian Conyers (D-Detroit), (Incumbent) N/A N/A
5 5 th District Current Senator: David Knezek (D-Dearborn Heights), (Incumbent) DeShawn Wilkins (R-Detroit) N/A
6 6 th District Current Senator: Hoon-Yung Hopgood (D-Taylor), (term-limited) Rep. Bob Kosowski (D-Westland) Rep. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor)
7 7 th District Current Senator: Patrick Colbeck (R-Canton), (term-limited) Dr. Ghulam Qadir (D), CEO of Apex Behavorial Health-Dearborn PLLC Dayna Lynn Polehanki (D) Former Rep. John Stewart Sean Brosnan, husband to Livonia City Council member Maureen Miller Brosnan Briand Meakin (R), Livonia City Council Rep. Laura Cox (R-Livonia) Rep. Cox seems to have had the nomination set, but with the recent announcement of U.S. Congressman David Trott s retirement, she is reportedly considering a run for the U.S. House. Further, some suspect she might be picked as Bill Schuette s running mate should he win the GOP gubernatorial nomination. If either pull her from the State Senate race, both former Rep. John Pastor and former Plymouth Township Supervisor, Shannon Price, are possible replacements.
8 8 th District Current Senator: Jack Brandenburg (R-Harrison Twp.), (termlimited) Rep. Peter Lucido (R-Shelby Twp.) Justin DeBoer (D) Former Rep. Tony Forlini (R-Harrison Twp.), current Macomb County Drain Commission Operational Service Manager Former Rep. Pete Lund (R- Shelby Twp.), currently with Americans for Prosperity
9 9 th District Current Senator: Steve Bieda (D-Warren), (term-limited) Former Rep. Paul Wojno (D-Warren), current Warren City Clerk Former Rep. Marilyn Lane (D-Fraser), former Fraser Mayor
10 10 th District Current Senator: Tory Rocca (R-Sterling Heights), (term-limited) Rep. Henry Yanez (D-Sterling Heights) Michael Shallal (R), former U.S defense contractor Dr. Steve Naumovski (R) Joseph Bogdan (R), automotive engineer Former Rep. Leon Drolet (R-Macomb Township), current Macomb County Commissioner
11 11 th District Current Senator: Vincent Gregory (D-Lathrup Village), (termlimited) N/A Rep. Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield) Rep. Robert Wittenberg (D-Oak Park) Former Rep. Ellen Cogen Lipton (D-Huntington Woods)
12 12 th District Current Senator: Jim Marleau (R-Lake Orion), (term-limited) Rep. Jim Tedder (R-Clarkston) Rosemary Bayer (D-Beverly Hills) Jeremy Ross Haines (D-Lake Orion) Kate Logan (D-Oxford) Rep. Mike McCready (R-Birmingham) The announcement of U.S. Congressman David Trott s retirement may have an impact on this race as Rep. Tedder, long considered a candidate for the Senate, may choose the U.S. House instead.
13 13 th District Current Senator: Marty Knollenberg (R-Troy), (Incumbent) Mallory McMorrow (D) James Sokoll (D) The announcement of U.S. Congressman David Trott s retirement may result in Sen. Knollenberg s decision to run for the U.S. House, leaving the 13 th District seat open. If that is the case, prospective candidates will include current Representatives Mike Webber (R-Rochester Hills) and Martin Howrylak (R-Troy). Furthermore, Rep. McCready may decide to run in the 13 th Senate District rather than moving to the 12 th ; however, none of the three are likely to challenge Sen. Knollenberg in a primary if he decides not to run for the U.S. House.
14 14 th District Current Senator: Dave Robertson (R-Grand Blanc), (termlimited) Secretary of State Ruth Johnson (R) Rep. Joe Graves (R-Argentine Twp.), unlikely Rep. Gail Haines (R-Waterford), unlikely
15 15 th District Current Senator: Mike Kowall (R-White Lake), (term-limited) Former Rep. Hugh Crawford (R-Novi) Rep. Jim Runestad (R-White Lake) Julia Pulver (D-West Bloomfield) Rep. Klint Kesto (R-Commerce Twp.) Matt Maddock, unlikely since he is believed to be running for the State House. The announcement of U.S. Congressman David Trott s retirement will have an impact on this State Senate race as Rep. Kesto is likely to run for the U.S. House instead of the State Senate, potentially leaving an opening for an additional GOP candidate.
16 16 th District Current Senator: Sen. Mike Shirkey (R-Clark Lake), (Incumbent) N/A N/A 17 th District Current Senator: Dale Zorn (R-Ida), (Incumbent) N/A Former Rep. Kathy Angerer (D-Dundee) Former Rep. Bill LaVoy (D-Monroe), although unlikely. 18 th District Current Senator: Rebekah Warren (D-Ann Arbor), (term-limited) Michelle Deatrick (D) Anuja Rajendra (D) Rep. Adam Zemke (D-Ann Arbor) Former Rep. Jeff Irwin (D-Ann Arbor) Felicia Brabec, Washtenaw County Commissioner Brenda Stumbo, Ypsilanti Township Supervisor
17 19 th District Current Senator: Mike Nofs (R-Battle Creek), (term-limited) Rep. John Bizon (R-Battle Creek) Jason Noble (D-Middleville) Former Rep. Mike Callton (R-Nashville) 20 th District Current Senator: Margaret O Brien (R-Portage), (Incumbent) N/A Former Rep. Sean McCann (D-Kalamazoo) 21 st District Current Senator: John Proos (R-St. Joseph), (term-limited) N/A Al Pscholka (R-Stevensville), current Budget Director Rep. Dave Pagel (R-Berrien Springs) Rep. Kim Lasata (R-Bainbridge Twp.)
18 22 nd District Current Senator: Joe Hune (R-Hamburg Twp.), (term-limited) Rep. Lana Theis (R-Brighton) Adam Dreher (D), Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, Ionia County 23 rd District Current Senator: Curtis Hertel Jr. (D-East Lansing), (Incumbent) Justin DeBoer (D-Lansing) N/A 24 th District Current Senator: Rick Jones (R-Grand Ledge), (term-limited) Rep. Tom Barrett (R-Potterville) Rep. Brett Roberts (R-Charlotte) Kelly Rossman-McKinney (D), CEO of Truscott Rossman
19 25 th District Current Senator: Phil Pavlov (R-St. Clair), (term-limited) N/A Rep. Dan Lauwers (R-Brockway), House Majority Floor Leader Rep. Shane Hernandez (R-Port Huron), although unlikely. Rep. Ed Canfield (R-Sebawaing), although unlikely. 26 th District Current Senator: Tonya Schuitmaker (R-Lawton), (term-limited) N/A Former Rep. Aric Nesbitt (R-Lawton), current Michigan Lottery Director Bob Genetski (R-Saugatuck), current Allegan County Clerk The speculation over U.S. Congressman Fred Upton s consideration of a U.S. Senate candidacy may impact this race as Nesbitt is widely believed to favor a run for the U.S. House over the State Senate. Current State Rep. Mary Whiteford (R-Casco Twp.) is likely to run for the Senate if Nesbitt runs for the U.S. House. 27 th District Current Senator: Jim Ananich (D-Flint), (Incumbent) N/A N/A
20 28 th District Current Senator: Peter MacGregor (R-Rockford), (Incumbent) Ryan Jenette (D-Grand Rapids) N/A 29 th District Current Senator: Dave Hildenbrand (R-Lowell), (term-limited) Rep.
