2 Notes from the Chair... As the weather turns cold, we're reminded that another year will soon be on us promises to be a big year for the Boone County Democratic Party, with many important campaigns before the November elections. Former Gov. Roger Wilson, Wendy Noren, Darren Hellwege and Lisa Finn at the dedication of the Wendy Noren Room for Democratic Candidates. Much of the focus will be on our state's US senate race, and a statewide campaign for auditor. But there will be a lot of other campaigns that deserve our attention and our hard work. When we had our event honoring Wendy Noren on Oct. 27th, we saw two sterling examples of why our Boone County office-holders are so valuable, and why helping elect Democrats to those offices is so crucial. The first, of course, is Wendy herself. She's served the party, and all the citizens of Boone County, with professionalism and excellence as county clerk for many years. Our vital right to vote, and to trust the integrity of our election process, was in great hands for many years with Wendy and her staff. But we saw another reason why these offices are significant in one of our guest speakers, former Missouri Governor Roger Wilson. Roger's first office was that of Boone County collector, and he then went on to serve in the state senate, as lieutenant governor and as governor. What those of us fond of sports clichés call "bench strength" is demonstrated in great leaders who started in county government and went on to serve in higher office. We will see two further examples in next year's election. US Senator Claire McCaskill was Jackson County prosecutor before running for state auditor. And our current state auditor, Nicole Galloway, was previously Boone County treasurer. This newsletter will reach most of you in November. On November 6th, it will be T-minus 365 days until the 2018 election. Let's get ready for a successful election next year, including electing Democrats to our Boone County government. And let's always keep Wendy as the finest example of public service and dedication to the people of Boone County. Darren Hellwege, Chair Boone County Democratic Party 2
3 Support the Democratic social network in Boone County and keep Democrats informed and engaged in political dialogue throughout the year. MULESKINNERS ANNUAL ELECTION OF OFFICERS AND 2018 DUES The purposes of Muleskinners include supporting Democratic Party candidates, disseminating information to members and the public by hosting forums that provide accurate information related to government, and providing a forum for reasoned debate of issues. This coming year, we will be hosting several candidate forums. We often have press in attendance which publish articles in the Tribune and Missourian. Membership is defined by payment of dues which are on a calendar year basis. Dues for 2018 membership will start being collected in November. We encourage you to join both the Boone County Democratic party and Muleskinners by selecting the Joint option on the dues form. Your membership in Muleskinners supports the free luncheons provided our speakers and the use of the space at the Country Club of Missouri. See the last page for the membership form. Officers for 2018 will be elected on November 17, usually by voice vote. Those who have paid their 2017 or 2018 Muleskinners dues before the election can vote. A nomination committee has proposed a slate, but other nominations may be made from the floor, in which case voting is by ballot. 5 A Room With A View Forward On a chilly Friday night, over 50 people honored longtime Boone County Clerk Wendy Noren and her 35 years of service with the dedication of the Wendy Noren Room for Democratic Candidates at the Boone County Democratic Headquarters. Chair Darren Hellwege presided over the reception saying, Our county has given its trust to Democratic leaders like Wendy Noren for many years, and we ve seen outstanding work in these important jobs as a result. The Wendy Noren Room will be a place for the next generation of leaders dedicated to the people of Boone County a place to base their campaigns, and to draw inspiration from Wendy. Another Democratic leader who attended to honor Wendy was former Governor Roger Wilson, who spoke of Wendy s contributions to democrocay locally and across the world. Newly elected to the Boone County Democratic Central Committee (Cedar Township) Lisa Finn, read a statement from sister, Senator Claire McCaskill who said of Wendy, Humble, hard-working, friendly and fair, she has been a role model to so many, even when she didn t realize it. Wendy reminisced and talked about her experiences from when the Constitutional amendment changed the voting age so she could vote at 18 to running in the primaries at 27. Recruiting and empowering women to run for office was something she was always proud of. She thanked her brother and mother who both attended. Wendy donated a VOTE wood block print to the room. Designed to serve as a central hub of operations for local, state, and federal Democratic candidates in Boone County, the room will serve as a permanent reminder of Noren s distinguished service, loyalty and devotion to the ideals of both Boone County and the Democratic Party. Two photos from the Columbia Missourian are the center pieces of the room. One from Wendy s appointment to the position in 1979 and the other from her campaign in The Wendy Noren Room is available to any Democratic hopeful and provides desktop work space, storage, office supplies and printing access. Current maps of the legislative districts, election calendars and a list of open seats will also be available. 5
