3 Instruments Status (1) Ø Instruments status: General: All instruments healthy and working fine. Ø Recent anomalies (since last UGM 19/04/2013): No new Instrument anomalies since last UGM NCR#137: MOS1 CCDs damaged NCR ready to be closed after implementation of all required Procedures. ODB V6.20 (date) installed to this purpose CCDs 3 & 6 periodic checks (yearly) show no change on CCD status (dead). NCR#138: PN CCD currents Out of Limits Low NCR ready to be closed after implementation of Procedures. No new events in the last year. Procedure calls for gathering as much information as possible in case the event happens again and before setting the Instrument to Safe Stand-by. 4 Instruments Status (2) Ø Main events Spacecraft: CDMU halted on 3 rd Mar All instruments were observing at that moment. OM All instruments stopped (Safe Stand-by, Full Safe). After recovery of the CDMU problem (possible SEU) all instruments required reconfiguration. PN required a second reconfiguration including full memory reload. All the internal clocks required re-synchronization. The total impact on science was ~12 hours. OM DPU malfunction in revs (30 th Jan rd Feb 2014). The event occurred during weekend and OM was sending science data (corrupted) all this time until it was detected at the SOC. All OM exposures in the period were lost. 5 Instruments Status (3) Ø Minor Instrument anomalies: Ø RGSs No anomalies, everything nominal. Ø OM Since last UGM OM suffered 2 cases of DPU reset and 24 cases of on-board memory corruption. Similar to previous years. Recovery from this type of contingencies is being analysed to be made automatic. Ø PN No anomalies, everything nominal. Ø EPICs No anomalies, everything nominal. 6 Instrument Operations Highlights (1) Ø Eclipse Operations: Nominal General: the level of automatism is maintained (i.e. the on-board time tagged commands take control avoiding any impact on the instruments, apart of the delay on the start of the first observation in the revolution). Summer 2013 eclipse activities (2/06/13-22/06/12) - 10 eclipses in total. Nominal. Winter 2013 eclipse activities (22/11/13-29/12/13) - 19 eclipses in total. Nominal but one eclipse that coincided with Gaia launch and had no GS coverage. Used for testing of coming strategies for future Perigee gap. Eclipse operation was nominal. Ø Recent updates of instrument operations items: Bright Pixels Table: final tables uploaded (NCR# 137). Ø Radiation No big Solar Flares in the period (closest in Jan 2014 with ~30 hours lost split in two consecutive revs). Impact of radiation on science very low. 7 Operations Evolution (1) Ø 4WD Operations: Since end of Sep 2013 the Attitude control for XMM-Newton is done using all four wheels. Reduced fuel consumption with ~50% saving and almost doubling life expectancy. Aprox 55 kg remaining. With 4WD usage is (has been in the last months) down to ~3 kg/year. Caging problem: Reduced to less than 10% of the occasions for wheel 1. Strategies for going out of caging: Slow speed change. Preventive measure with the wheels slowly drifting and maintaining the pointing. Fast speed change in case caging occurs for more than one hour. Wheels speed is changed in a sudden way. A small jitter occurs in this case but well below the OM requirements for stability (< 3 arcsec). OM was in BLOCKED during first cases of fast speed change but once verified this constraint was removed. XMM-Newton UGM#15, Instrument Ops & Data Generation J. R. 8 Operations Evolution (2) Ø Development of Ground Station coverage gap XMM-Newton s orbit evolution generates a GS coverage gap at Perigee for Kourou (see next plot for the gap evolution in the coming years). The gap basic impact is that science (for all revs) is affected because of the delay to start science operations (impact varies depending on the gap duration). No impact on Instrument operations as far as the Instruments remain in Perigee configuration. But the impact in the case of eclipse periods becomes a concern. Instruments can not be left in the Perigee configuration and only pn and RGS temperatures can be controlled (power requirements). MOSs temperature excursions can be large but are within safety limits. Science can only be useful once the temperatures have reached back nominal levels after the eclipse and the (now present) antenna gap. 10 Operations Evolution (3) Ø Solutions to the Perigee gap: Implementation of thermal control using the CDMU patch (on-board) capabilities. This capability allows the control of the temperatures but during eclipses it can only control platform elements. Some temperature excursions expected within permitted limits. Availability of other(s) Ground Stations: Maspalomas is already confirmed as a supporting XMM-Newton GS. Villafranca will also be available. Both share a very similar profile. However they only support the post-perigee part so pre-perigee eclipses will still require special operations. 11 Operations Evolution (4) Ø Tank replenishment: Tests on tank replenishment using CDMU patch to control tanks temperatures (four tanks). Again special operations required to finally verify the SW. This will also require time to be taken out of science. Ø Apogee gap By the end of 2015 Perth GS will become inoperative. This would generate a gap around apogee that would impact the best part of the revolution. Currently alternatives are being discussed: Dongara, New Norcia,. 12 Statistics Ø Overall, very good behavior of all Ground Segment elements. Ø Efficiency is, at least, maintained for all Instruments. MOC migrated to Solaris 10 by end of Feb 2014 after tests with SOC were successful. SOC is currently doing the migration to Virtual Systems based on Solaris 10.
