2 Objective The Small Spacecraft Mission Service (SSMS) initiative aims at providing the Vega Program with: Ø A comprehensive frame of launch system provisions for small spacecraft Ø Capability to guarantee access to space to small spacecrafts from European and International Organisations and Institutions Ø Capability to offer a competitive Launch Service Agreement tailored to meet launch needs of small spacecraft Ø Readiness to offer time tagged launch service with Vega launch vehicle

3 Implementation ESA internal study to assess feasibility from technical and programmatic stand point, based on the following elements: Ø Contacts with Stakeholders (potential Customers) Ø Assessment of requirements standardisation for small S/C Ø Preliminary missionisation concept analysis Ø Preliminary assessment of specific launcher performance capability Ø Design concept of Spacecraft Dispenser Ø Development and qualification planning Ø Programmatic and cost assessment

4 Implementation were concentrated on following applications, standard S/C classes: Nanosat: 1-10 Kg Microsat: Kg Minisat: Kg Compatible with Vega launcher performance capabilities, in a multi-payload mission configuration

5 Launcher capabilities Trajectory studies MORE THAN 20 Launcher trajectory analyses performed Ø Payload capability between 900 and 1300 Kg, depending on orbit and dispenser configuration Ø 1 to 3 orbit altitudes at similar inclinations, SSO based Ø Deployment of up to 6 S/C on same orbit, altitudes ranging: 800 to 500 Km Ø Use of existing ground stations network is sufficient for reference configuration (two orbits) Ø More complex missions would need additional GS

7 Missionisation concept Accommodation of 10 to 20+ small spacecrafts implies streamlined mission study approach and anticipated key MKT activities Ø Anticipated MKT survey Ø Close interaction between MKT and technical functions during early mission definition phase Ø Anticipated support to customer for insurance strategy Ø S/C accommodation studies in advance to MOU signature Ø Common missionisation analyses for all passengers Ø PMA common phase done upon MOU signature and before LSA signature Ø FMA start upon LSA Ø All analyses done by the same entity, dedicated to technical, commercial and MKT tasks

9 Definition of Project structure for D&Q phase Key activities of D&Q phase shall be: Ø Development of missionisation concept Ø Enabling Hardware design, development and qualification Missionisation ground rules: Ø Include both MKT and technical analyses Ø To be carried out through a joint effort, until qualification flight Ø Detailed definition of missionisation process shall be based on lessons learnt of Verta phase Ø Qualification of missionisation process shall be completed in the frame of SSMS qualification flight preparation
