Welcome to Opening the Polls, Election day
If you are scheduled to work in the morning, you should arrive at the polling location no later than 6:00 am 2
Once you arrive: o ensure there is an American flag outside the entrance door to the polling location So voters know where to enter the polling location; o place the vote here sign by the entrance 3
Your head judge will remove these items from the blue box: o Blue book, o Sample ballots, and o The secretary of state signs which are required to be posted 4
In the blue book, your head judge will find all forms that need to be completed and instructions for every task o Election Judge duty bags also include these forms and instructions 5
When an election judge starts their day, they will need to; o read the oath on the official precinct certification; and o sign the form All election judges are required to read and sign this form when they arrive at the polling location before starting any tasks The official precinct certification form is only in the blue book 6
Your head judge will assign election judges to set up the polling location The flow in the polling place should ensure there is easy access and privacy for voters This includes, but not limited to; o Setting up tables & chairs o Setting up voting booths o Placing the AutoMark on an ADA table and turning it on o Setting up and turning on the DS200, vote tabulator 7
When setting up the voting booths, ensure voter privacy 8
Chairs should be available for voters waiting to vote 9
Tables should be available for voters who are completing election related forms. o This would include any voter who does not want to wait for an open voting booth 10
Every even year the secretary of state s office provides updated signs o These signs need to be posted to assist voters with the voting process and requirements 11
The blue sample ballots for every ballot style in your precinct must be posted o Front and back 12
Election judges must wear identification while they are in the polling place o This should include the first name only o Do not show any party affiliation o A head or co head judge should also include the words head judge 13
On the official precinct certification form, the head judge or equipment judge should verify the seal numbers correspond on the DS200 and the AutoMark o Two election judges must sign the precinct certification form once the seal numbers are verified 14
Your head judge or an assigned election judge, must certify the number of ballots received; o Each ballot style needs to be certified o Unopened ballot packets count as 50 o Two election judges must sign the ballot certification located on the precinct certification form 15
A ballot tally sheet, which is located in the blue book, must be completed for every ballot style in the precinct o Instructions for completing the tally sheets are in the blue book 16
At 6:00 am, your head judge will assign election judges to; o Open an ample supply, but NOT all ballot packets o Inspect each ballot to ensure there are no identifying marks on them 17
Ballots are shrink wrapped by weight o Each packet MAY or may NOT contain 50 ballots o Two election judges will need to physically count each ballot packet opened 18
Record the number of ballots in each packet opened on the ballot tally sheets o Use the plus/minus columns on your tally sheets to record any discrepancies 19
Ballot tally sheets are the same color as your voter receipts 20
Your head judge will assign election judges to start initialing ballots 21
Your head judge will remove the election judge duty bags 22
Your head judge will assign each election judge an election day task, which could include; o DS200, vote tabulator o The AutoMark, assistive voting equipment o Greeter Judge o Roster Judge o EDR Judge o Ballot Judge, or o Demonstration Judge 23
Once you have been assigned an election day task, you will be given the election judge duty bag; o take the judge duty bag to your location; and o Set up the location so voting can start at 7:00 am 24
This is a sample of what a polling location might look like. o Each task should be set up to ensure voting starts when the polls open at 7:00 am; and o Voters will have easy access and privacy when voting o The number of roster and election day registration judges assigned will be dependent on the number of registered voters and the expected voter turnout o Ballot & demonstration judge duties can be combined 25
