7 Word Wall Vocabulary: Capitalism: the same as free enterprise all products are owned by private individuals Socialism: the idea that the government should own some basic industries (like schools and health care) and private citizens should own the rest Communism: the capitalists mistreat the workers and the workers will ultimately rise against them. The classless society that remains is communism Bourgeois: similar but different from the French term, refers to capitalists or rich people Proletariat: working class

8 What is the Industrial Revolution? The Industrial Revolution is a major shift in world history. Before the Industrial Revolution, most people worked in agriculture (farming) and lived in the country. During and after the Industrial Revolution, most people worked in manufacturing (factories) and lived in the city.

9 What is Capitalism? Adam Smith founder of free enterprise Free enterprise = capitalism What is free enterprise? The ability of people to decide what to buy, where to work, and what to make. People can own their own businesses, factories, and homes.

10 What is Socialism? Political movement in response to the injustices of industry and the exploitation of workers no one founder Socialists believed that workers could improve their own conditions by political action Socialism became an economic system when socialists began arguing that the government should own basic industries and also provide essential services, like free schooling, housing, and a national health program What services do you think the government should provide?

11 What is Communism? Karl Marx founder Believed that workers created value through their labor Business owners used their power to take advantage of workers Capitalist only pays the workers the minimum they need to survive and the rest they kept for themselves

12 What is Communism? Over time, capitalists (bourgeois)* get richer and richer Conditions for the workers (proletariat) would become so bad that they would rise up and violently overthrow the capitalists After the revolution, Marx predicted workers would establish an equal society communism In pure communism, everything was owned in common No private property No social classes Do you think communism will work? Why or why not?

Find a person who is not sitting in your row and read your responses to them. Discuss your disagreements.
