1 t is time for India to launch Ithe Asian Space Agency, this is what Dr Nambi Narayanan, described as the father figure of the country s heavy duty rocket development programme told The Pioneer on Monday after watching the proceedings at Satish Dhavan Space Centre at Sriharikota, (Andhra Pradesh) from where Team ISRO successfully launched the complex and complicated Geosynchronous Satellite Launching Vehicle-Mark 3 D1 (GSLV-Mark III), which was nicknamed the fat boy by Indian space scientists and Bahubali by the Telugu media. Weighing 640 tonnes, GSLV- Mark III is the heaviest ever rocket made by India till date. Not only that, the space scientists successfully deployed GSAT-19, a next generation communication satellite weighing 3,136 kg, the heaviest ever communication satellite fabricated in India, into the Geo Stationary Orbit, 36,000 km away from the earth. The D1 in the GSLV-Mark 3 stands for the first developmental flight. This means that India is not dependant on any other space agencies like the ESA (European Space Agency) to launch its heavy communication satellites. Till now, ISRO had to carry the heavy communication satellites built by it to the ESA s launch pad at French Guyana ountdown begins. Come CJuly 1 when you have nothing to say at all but only shout hurrah for paying your Goods and Service Tax or GST on some items you buy for your daily use, but you are likely to feel the pinch on some other items. Aiming at aam aadmi s basic needs, including roti, kapda aur makaan, which will be available at cheaper prices under the GST regime, the Government has finalised four-tier tax slabs, except gold and rough diamonds which do not fall under the current rate-slab ambit. Gold will be taxed at 3 per cent and diamond at 0.25 per cent. With the Government making the unique and historic concept One nation, one tax, one market real, some basic items such as eggs, milk, butter milk, curd, honey, fresh fruits and vegetables, flour, besan, bread, prasad, salt, fresh meat, fish, chicken, etc, will bring a smile in your face with a charge of zero tax or no tax. On the other hand, you will burn a hole in your pocket by paying your hard-earned money through GST at 28 per cent on indispensable items such as chocolate, chewing gum, wafers, pan masala, aerated water, deodorants, shaving creams, aftershave, hair shampoo, dye, water heater, washing machine, ATM vending machines, vacuum cleaner, shavers, molasses, etc. The rate of taxation on almost all 1,211 items has been finalised. 55 items will invite cess and some useful items will be exempted from the GST, while remaining items like tax on lottery will be decided by the GST Council s next meeting, which has been scheduled for June 11. It is, however, learnt that there is also a room for the revision of some of items, if needed. We have already finalised tax and cess, and without cess for almost all items to be taxed under the GST regime, but some items or goods are left to be included in the list, including tax on lottery. Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen and the Maldives joined Saudi Arabia and Egypt in severing relations with gas-rich Qatar, with Riyadh accusing Doha of supporting groups, including some backed by Iran, that aim to destabilise the region. Qatar reacted with fury, denying any support for extremists and accusing its Gulf neighbours of seeking to put the country under guardianship. The crisis was likely to have wide-ranging consequences, not just for Qatar and its citizens but around the Middle East and for Western interests. Qatar hosts the largest US airbase in the region, which is crucial to operations against Islamic State group jehadis, and is set to host the 2022 football World Cup. Monday s announcement came less than a month after US President Donald Trump visited Saudi Arabia to cement ties with Riyadh and called for a united front of Muslim countries. paying exorbitant amount as launch fee for each launch. As per the data released by the CSC satellite on its own. We have become a major space power and global player in launch business, said Nambi Narayanan who on Monday, India has witnessed the warmest years in the last fifteen years due to climate change. T h e annual mean temperature in India has increased by about 1.2 degrees Celsius since the beginning of the 20th century, CSE said in their report. Annual mean temperature in India has rapidly increased since At this rate of increase, it will breach the 1.5-degree mark within the next two decades. 1.5 degrees Celsius is the aspirational target set under the Paris Agreement, CSE further said. Citing the data, CSE Director General Sunita Narain expressed concern over US President Donald Trump pulling his country out of the Paris Agreement on climate change. In a Facebook live while releasing the developed the VIKAS engine in the 1990s which formed the core of Monday s GSLV mission. Meanwhile, President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated scientists of ISRO for the successful launch of India s heaviest rocket. We appeal to the global community to come together and take strong actions. In three out of four seasons (or nine months in a year), temperature in India has already increased by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius since the beginning of the 20th century and in Winters and premonsoon (summers) and post-monsoon seasons have seen rapidly increasing warming. he State Government has Tgone ahead hammering the environmental pollution caused due to growing number and uses of vehicles, the single largest source of green house gases in open air. Those who buy more than one car would have to pay more tax. Also, a task force is in the offing to coordinate with various departments to handle the carbon and other emissions. The declarations were made by Chief Minister Raghubar Das on Monday on the occasion of the World Environment Day. "Jharkhand has been a nature loving State where clean air and water with lots of forest were its identity. But this tag is fading out due to growing AC fitted vehicles which are polluting environment. We have decided to amend the vehicular tax system in which more taxes would be levieds on a second car. Sources said the suicide squad was first noticed by dogs surrounding the camp who alerted the sentries. An illuminating bomb exposed the terrorists positions before they were gunned down. With infiltration bids going up and ceasefire violation also on the rise, India warned Pakistan that abetment of these acts will invite appropriate retaliatory actions. Indian Director General of Military Operation conveyed this warning to his Pakistan counterpart. a task force for coordination with all the departments which would work for environmental audit," said the CM. The task force would be headed by the Chief Secretary and ensure that all the departments adhere to the set standards meant to reduce emissions of all kinds, especially vehicular. "It would also work for pressing the departments to adopt eco-friendly work culture as much as possible. Departments may be given ratings and awards based on that," said a senior official of the Forest, Environment and Climate Change department. utting an end to the specu- of a possible thaw in Plation the frozen India-Pakistan ties, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Monday there will be no bilateral engagement between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif on the sidelines of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in Kazakhstan this month where the two countries will join as new members. It was expected that the two PMs might sit together to work out a solution to resume The CM went on underlining inherited culture of the State as far as safeguarding nature is concerned. "Jharkhandis have a culture to worship Mother Nature, be it trees, rivers, plateaus or mountains. The Sarna society is a nature lover. We as a Government have to promote this culture and thus are dedicated to save environment. This is also vital for our survival. If we don't act now, the earth would become uninhabitable and our coming generations would not forgive us," said the Chief Minister. The nation is proud. According to Kiran Kumar, chairman, ISRO, the country can launch heavy duty communication satellites from SDSC, India s space port at Sriharikota on its own without any outside help. The GSLV- Mark 3 launch vehicle deployed by India on Monday is the heaviest ever rocket built by the country and powered by an indigenously developed cryogenic engine, one of the most complicated technologies in the world which uses liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen to power the rockets. It may be remembered that other space powers had tried their best to sabotage and subvert India s efforts to develop the indigenous cryogenic engine. The ISRO spy case of 1995, which cost the careers of two eminent space scientists, Narayanan and Sasi Kumar, was the handiwork of persons who were under the payroll of various foreign agencies; Yadav was riding with one more Gulli Yadav who managed to escape. The arresting of this opium smuggler was done on Panki Loharssi road. The successful launching of the GSLV-Mark 3 vehicle has proved to the global space community that India is capable of launching heavy communication satellites at much reduced rates which literally means that access to space for all has become a reality. India can also plan its future interplanetary missions like Chandrayaan-2 or Mangalayaan 2, missions to moon and mars respectively, said Narayanan. He also said that it is time to seriously think of manned mission to space, the only segment in space science in which China has an advantage over India. eckless driving left 13 peoples seriously Rinjured near G.K. The online provision of rechecking the copies will be made soon by the JAC administration which is first of its kind arrangement being made by the examination conducting body since its inception. Though the examination conducting body has the provision of revaluating the answer sheets of any candidate who have appeared in the board exams and have applied for rechecking process but as per the guidelines of the State board, students earlier were not allowed to see their answer scripts. Candidates who have applied for the rechecking procedure were previously dependent on the subject teacher who used to just re-total the marks obtained in the specific subject and submit it to the board. The decision has been taken by the council to even out several irregularities especially when it comes to marking system or tabulating the composite mark sheets. Following the guidelines of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and to maintain transparency, the State Board has considered to upload the answer sheets of the students who have applied for reevaluation on the official website of the State board. There is already a provision of reevaluating the answer scripts but in an attempt to maintain transparency, the board this year will make the answer scripts available on the JAC website as well. JAC administration is in the process of making the online provision for the convenience of the students who are not satisfied with the marks obtained. However, we have not decided any specific date for this arrangement yet, said JAC Chairperson Arvind Prasad Singh. This year approximately, 4.66 lakh students appeared in the Matric examination from across the State while 3.26 lakh candidates took the Inter examination in three different streams. The Matric and Inter results declared on May 30 have shown a declining trend so much so that the pass percentage in Matric exam this year has slashed down to percent, the lowest in 12 years. An official at JAC, requesting anonymity said that after publishing the revised results of both Matric and Inter on June 1, the State Board will soon make arrangement for rechecking answer scripts for which a website confirmation page will be generated separately after receiving online application from a student. The scanned answer scripts of the students will be made available online. After this provision students can easily analyze their answer sheets and can apply to board for further correction without much hassle. Within 45 to 60 days time, online procedure of rechecking papers will get complete. The board will charge specific fees subject wise for reevaluating the answer scripts, said the official of JAC.

Dinakaran was ousted and sidelined by the party as it attempted a reunion with a rebel faction led by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam whose main condition for the merger was that Sasikala and her family be kept away from the party and the Government. Dinakaran and his aide Mallikarjuna were arrested in April by the Delhi crime branch police. The duo was charged with attempting to bribe the Election Commission officials in the AIADMK symbol row to gain a favourable verdict. elangana has become the Tfirst State to take up specific measures, including making budgetary allocation for the welfare of Brahmin community, the elite in the Hindu caste hierarchy. Andhra Pradesh Minister for Urban Development K Taraka Rama Rao on Monday laid foundation stone for Brahmana Sadan, a community centre building in Gopanapalli in the outskirts of Hyderabad. He said that the reacting to the reports in a section of the Press that all the teachers of such schools would be dismissed. There are challenges and I take them as opportunity, said the CM and asked, Show me one place where perfectly ideal arrangements have been made. The CM said anybody found involved in wrongdoings and corrupt practices would not be spared. Nitish, who was speaking to media after a long time on Monday, also spoke on issues ranging from three years of the Narendra Modi Government to Kashmir to gau rakshaks. He came down heavily on the gau rakshaks and the restriction on cattle trade and ongress leaders and sup- held a massive Cporters protest throughout Uttar pradesh on Monday against alleged defacement of a statue of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in Mirzapur on Saturday night. While State Congress chief Raj Babbar along with Rajya Sabha member Pramod Tiwari rushed to Mirzapur and protested there demanding action against the culprits, in Lucknow, senior leaders held a huge protest and burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Yogi Adityanath before marching to Raj Bhawan. In Lucknow, the Congress leaders gathered at the GPO and then they burnt the effigies of PM and CM at Hazratganj crossing. Later, a Congress deleagtion led by Rajya Sabha member PL Punia, former Minister Satyadeo Tripathi, Virendra Madan, Sanjay Bajpai, Amarnath Agarwal, DP Singh, Onkar Singh, marched to the Raj Bhawan. There the angry Congressmen raised slogans against the Modi and Yogi Governments and alleged that they were behind the beheading of Rajiv Gandhi s statue in Mirzapur. Large contingent of police were deployed to avert any exigency but that could not prevent irked Congress workers and they even marched towards the BJP office to vent their ire. But later they changed their mind and instead went to Raj Bhawan. The CM disclosed that on experimental basis he asked Patna DM to identify places for keeping the stray animals and protect them from dangers of accident as well as plastic chewing. He said this problem was more chronic in UP but the cow vigilantees and BJP men were least bothered about it. Sometime ago RJD chief Lalu Prasad had asked his party workers to tie stray and aging cows and buffaloes at the door of the BJP leaders for their better upkeep. On three years of the BJP led Central Government, Nitish said before the election, their main promise was to create job opportunities and help farmers with minimum support price but nothing happened on these fronts. he Hindu Janajagruti TSamiti on Monday filed a police complaint with the cyber cell of the Goa Police, seeking a closure of controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik and his organistion Islamic Research Foundation s Facebook page, claiming the two pages contained socially divisive content. The complaint was filed on Monday by a lawyer Nagesh Takbhate, representing a wing of the samiti with the cyber cell. The Islamic Research Foundation and Dr Zakir Naik are active in India, even after the notification of ban and are committing cognisable offence. Therefore the Facebook page of IRF and Zakir Naik should be blocked immediately and an offence must be registered against Zakir Naik and its active members, followers and fans of Dr Zakir Naik and Islamic Research Foundation, the complaint said. The TV preacher Naik, who has been the focus of controversy following the recent Dhaka terror attack, has claimed innocence and has contested allegations of stoking communal flames and inspiring terrorists, which are being levelled against him, even as the Union Home Ministry has also started a probe into his activities. His foundation has already been banned for a period of five years under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. The lawyer has prayed that his complaint be also registered under the Information and KTR pointed out that the State Government has allocated 100 crore for the welfare of Brahmins. It is for thefirst time that a Government in the State made such allocation for Brahmins. While so far, the Government has been devising schemes and programmes for the welfare of Dalits, tribals, Backward Classes and minorities, Telangana has also started focusing on the other social groups, including Brahmins who constitute 2% of the State population. To a query on UP CM Yogi Adityanath s visit to Bihar and the two public meetings to tell people about the achievement of the Modi Government, Nitish said, The central leadership of the BJP is sending leaders from outside which meant that it has no faith in its State leaders. This reference was obvious towards Bihar top BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi who has a habit of issuing statement on daily basis against Nitish and his administration. On Kashmir issue, Nitish said it was a sensitive issue and should be handled carefully. The Centre, he said, should take all political parties by confidence and take whatever necessary action it deems fit. The CM said the Centre should also try for consensus on the President candidate and if fails to do so, the Opposition have the right to pick up their own candidate. Technology Act 2008 and Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. The complaint also says that the respective Facebook pages were posting objectionable content and encouraging followers of these pages to promote disharmony between different religious communities and groups. The Home Ministry of India has genuine evidence that Zakir Naik has been encouraging and aiding its followers to promote disharmony between different religious communities and groups. The Central Government has received information that the statements and speeches made by Zakir Naik are objectionable and subversive in nature as he has been extolling the known terrorists like Osama Bin Laden, proclaiming that every Muslim should be a terrorist, the complaint also says. Speaking to reporters in Panaji, Superintendent of Polic (Crime) Priyanka Kashyap said that her department was in receipt of the complaint and it was being examined.

A police team rushed to the spot and found an almirah in the temple broken with some items scattered on the floor. The police said that the family members accused three persons of Hassanpur in Bachrawa of committing the crime. They alleged that since they called off the marriage of one of the girls in their family with a boy related to the accused, they orchestrated the killing. The police however said that the circumstantial evidences pointed towards a case of loot and murder and hence they were trying to confirm it before initiating action against them. However, they were detained for quizzing. Meanwhile, in Sonbhadra, unidentified assailants shot a village pradhan in Naxal-affected Kanhaura village on Sunday night. Reports said that pradhan Ramesh Maurya was called outside his home by the assailants and fired upon. way to Gonda in eastern UP when the mishap took place near Bada bypass on NH 24. SSP Jogendra Kumar said, The accident involving a bus ower Minister Shrikant PSharma said that soon all villages across Uttar Pradesh will start getting 24x7 electricity under Power for All campaign, even as the Opposition charged that UP was reeling under acute power shortage and that the Minister s statement was nothing but hollow promise. Addressing employees of Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation in Lucknow on Monday the Power Minister said that rural areas were getting power for 18 hours, tehsils for 20 hours and districts for 24 hours. Our commitment is to provide power to all villages by 2018 under Power For All Scheme the Minister said. Sharma said that the power situation can improve only if the employees and Government work together. The Government will try to solve problems of the employees which include increase in pay and in turn the employees should work hard and ensure that people did not suffer, he said. Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party criticised the Minister for the prevailing power crisis in the State. The Minister has promised 24x7 power in districts, 20 hour supply in tehsils and 18 hour supply in villages. However, the fact remains that even districts were not getting more than 15 hours of power, SP spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary said in a statement issued in Lucknow on Monday. Chaudhary claimed that during the previous regime, villages were getting over 18 hours of power. This Government tried to replicate the same formula but failed because of its faulty delivery system. The CM should immediately take action against the Power minister, he said. of UPSRTC and a truck occurred between 1am and 1.30 am. Six passengers, who were critically injured, were hospitalised. Eyewitnesses claimed that the diesel tank of the bus burst after the collision leading to the fire. Around 5.45 am, we received 22 bodies from the accident site. Most bodies were charred beyond recognition. It was difficult to even determine the gender of the people, said Dr Shailesh Ranjan of Bareilly district hospital. The number of male and female passengers, who died in the accident, would be clear only after the post-mortem, Chief Medical Officer, Bareilly, Dr Vijay Yadav, said. The bus driver is also among the deceased, while the conductor received serious injuries. The driver of the truck, which was coming from Shahjehanpur, is absconding. The truck and the bus both caught fire after the collision. Meanwhile, UPSRTC has set up a control room (numbers : and ) to help the kin of the victims. elebrations were low key as CChief Minister Yogi Aditynath turned 45 on Monday and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Governor Ram Naik greeted him. Wishes started pouring in from all quarters wishing him long life and people greeting him by sending him messages through the social media or even personal meeting. The CM who attended an International Environment Day function in Lucknow on Monday morning, later left for Aligarh to attend several official functions there. A senior official said that Yogi Aditynath had never celebrated his birthday in the past and thus after becoming CM, he decided to follow the same tradition. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to wish Yogi Adityanath on his 45th birthday. In his tweet, the Prime Minister wrote, Birthday greetings to the youthful & dynamic CM of UP Yogi Adityanath. I wish him a long and healthy life. The CM responded promptly tweeting, Dhanyavaad. Governor Ram Naik, went to the Chief Minister s official residence and wished him luck on his birthday by presenting a bouquet. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, BJP president Amit Shah, Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, BJP vice-president Om Mathur were among the senior leaders who wished Yogi on his birthday. n incident of honour Akilling at the village Gundakanala in Muddebihal taluk in Vijayapura district of Karnataka has sent shock waves. According to police, a 21-year-old pregnant Muslim woman, identified as Banu Begum, was allegedly burnt alive by her family members for marrying Dalit youth Sayabanna Sharanappa Konnur from Valimiki caste on Saturday night. Konnur also sustained injuries in the ghastly incident and is battling for life in a hospital. Banu and Konnur hail from the same village and had fallen in love. Banu s family was against the relationship. The Banu s family members had lodged a case against Konnur under the Pocso Act with the Talikote police. However, two days after lodging the complaint, Banu eloped with Konnur to Goa and both of them returned to the village four days ago, after getting married at the sub-registrar s office in Muddebihal, police said. The police have arrested Banu s mother, sister, brotherin-law and brother in connection with the incident. Her two elder sisters and brothers are absconding, said DySP Prabhugouda Patil said. The love story of Banu Begum and 24-year-old Dalit boy Sayabanna Sharanappa Konnur, ended in a tragedy where in the family members of Banu Begaum allegedly burnt her alive after knowing that that she was pregnant. As the story goes the girls family was opposed to the relationship and they even went to police and filed a written complaint against the boy. After this incident, Banu and Sayabanna eloped to Goa on January 24, and decided to live there. In February, they got their marriage registered. When Banu got pregnant, the couple decided to return to Gundakanala, assuming that their families would accept their marriage. According to Talikote police, the family refused to accept them even after they come to know about her pregnancy. The families did not accept their marriage and a huge fight ensued throughout the day, the Talikote Dy SP said. On Saturday night, when the couple refused to give in to their families demands, he was brutally assaulted. Sayabanna arrived at the station and was severely injured. He narrated the series of events and he ran back to pick up Banu, police claimed. It was on Sunday, Banu s mother, brother, sister and father-in-law were arrested. They have been booked for murder and assault. Banu had been stabbed multiple times before being set on fire, Patil said. Four other accused in the case Banu s two elder sisters and two brothers are absconding, Patil added.

8 Despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi s efforts to keep the focus on development, his detractors have used every opportunity over the last three years to shift the discourse onto issues triggered by the antics of fringe elements in the Sangh Parivar or to distort routine governmental activity flowing out of court orders and see phantoms where none exists. A case in point is the recent hullabaloo about the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Market) Rules, The purpose of these rules is to protect animals from cruelty and not to regulate the trade in cattle for slaughter houses. It is also meant to curb illegal sale and smuggling of cattle and applies specifically to animals bought and sold in the notified live stock markets and animals seized as case properties by law enforcement agencies. They do not cover other areas. But more importantly, these rules have been made in compliance of an order of the Supreme Court in Gauri Maulekhi vs Union of India and Others, which primarily related to cattle smuggling to Nepal. In this case, the court ordered on July 13, 2015, that the Government should frame guidelines to prevent animals from being smuggled out of India for the Gadhimai Festival in Nepal, during which there is large-scale animal sacrifice. The apex court also directed the Director General (DG) of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) to examine the issue in detail and suggested certain measures to curb trans-boundary smuggling of cattle. The court asked the Government to implement these recommendations and notify rules in regard to Livestock Market and Case Property animals. The court issued a final order on July 12, 2016, in which it said that rules must be framed under Section 38 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, within three months. Following these directions, the Animal Welfare Board of India prepared the draft rules incorporating all the suggestions made by the Supreme Court in this case, and the draft rules were notified on January 16 this year, inviting objections and suggestions within 30 days from persons affected by the amendments. The Government received 13 representations, which were examined, and eventually rules were notified last month. Have you heard any of these facts or anything about the order of the Supreme Court in the cacophonous debate that is currently on in different parts of the country on these rules? Also, is it not an absolute perversion to say that these rules are aimed at curbing beef-eating? The background is as follows: Gauri Maulekhi of Dehra Dun petitioned the Supreme Court in 2014 seeking its intervention to stop the transportation of lakhs of animals from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Uttarakhand across the India-Nepal border for a barbaric ritual sacrifice at the Gadhimai Festival held once in five years in a village called Bariyarpur in Nepal. This is the largest animal sacrifice in the world and involves the gruesome slaughter of about half a million animals including sheep, buffaloes, pigs etc over a span of two days and 70 per cent of these animals that are put on the chopping block are smuggled into Nepal from India. At the very first hearing of this petition in October, 2014, the court issued a direction that no live cattle and buffaloes should be illegally exported from India to Nepal. Thereafter, it directed the DG, SSB, to call a joint meeting of representatives of the States, talk to the petitioner, evolve a comprehensive plan and submit the report to the court. The DG prepared the plan as directed by the court. He said in his report that lakhs of people from India cross the border when the festival is held. In view of the open and porous nature of the India-Nepal border, it is difficult to prevent cattle crossing over if effective measures are not taken in the Sir This refers to the editorial, Trump s climate change (June 5). The US s decision to exit from the Paris climate change accord will come as a serious threat to the entire planet. The condition of the global environment is such that delay by even a single day, in executing the policy, will lead to an increase in pollution level to unmanageable numbers. The US is undoubtedly a developed country, but how would it matter if the nation proves to be a factor of destruction instead of benefiting the globe? Fortunately, environmental awareness is fast spreading in India and, therefore, it is hoped that the atmosphere will likely improve in the coming years. However, the US s withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement will affect not only the environment over there, but it will also be a potential threat to the countries across the globe. Needless to say, it will adversely affect our future generations too. It is, therefore, up to us how we want our future to be. After all, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Atri Garg New Delhi Sir This refers to the editorial, One titanic controversy (June 5). It seems that controversy has become a middle name for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). All this does not augur well for Indian cricket. Spin legend Anil Kumble came hinterland to prevent the transportation of animals up to the border, due to the large numbers involved. Therefore, concerted efforts are required to be taken by every agency across the states mandated to prevent cattle smuggling and animal sacrifice. He told the court that the transport of these animals involved 17 violations, including provisions of the Constitution, Acts of Parliament and Rules made there under and judgements of the Supreme Court, apart from economic ramifications like yearly drainage of large population of productive animals, setback to agriculture and animal husbandry and illegal activities in respect of sale and transportation of livestock and cross-border smuggling. The report recommended legallymandated institutions and mechanisms like the constitution of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelties to Animals in every district, establishment of State Animal Welfare Boards in every State as directed by the Supreme Court, creation of training modules on animal welfare for law enforcement agencies and a general prohibition on animal slaughter at any religious or public place, and setting up of monitoring and evaluation committees to prevent such cruelty to animals. More significantly, the report said that rules should be framed to regulate cattle markets to ensure that healthy cattle are sold only for legally authorised purposes ; animal transportation should be done only in accordance with various Acts and Rules in vogue; and rules must be framed for disposal of seized cattle to ensure that they do not get recycled into smuggling. The court directed the Government to implement these recommendations and frame the Rules as suggested by the DG, SSB, in his report to the court. The Government took extra time to implement the order and eventually came up with the Rules in question. What has any of this got to do with the consumption of beef or cow protection in particular? Is it a sin to implement the orders of the Supreme Court? This is an absolutely bogus controversy created by the pseudo-secular brigade which indulges frequently in its favourite pastime of mocking at Hindus for their reverence for the cow. Hindu-hating communists in Kerala cooked beef on the roadside and consumed it to register their protest against the Rules framed as per directions of the court. Sadly, the Congress too is going along the same road these days. The Youth Congress too used the occasion to mock at the Hindus. They cooked and ate beef along the roadside in Thiruvananthapuram. The people will teach them a lesson. (The writer is Chairman, Prasar Bharati. Views expressed here are personal) with a huge wealth of experience and produced amazing results too. One may argue that whatever we have achieved till date is on home soil. The real test lies on the foreign soil. But if captain Virat Kohli is not happy with Kumble s attitude, these things can be better sorted out across the table in the presence of the Committee of Administrators (CoA). Each individual is different. Both the captain and the coach need to understand this. There are not many with Kumble s stature to be appointed as the next coach, so the BCCI and the CoA need to tread carefully. No one is above the game, and Indian cricket s interest should be paramount. Egos have no place in such matters. Bal Govind Noida Sir This refers to the editorial, Containing Zika s spread (June 3). The World Health Organisation has confirmed the first three cases of Zika virus in India. We need to be on alert as Zika virus can cause an epidemic in no time. We must not forget that Sri Lanka has got the status of the second malaria-free country in the Southeast Asia region after the Maldives, in spite of its long history with the disease. India should take lessons from these two countries to eliminate the menace of deadly vector-borne diseases on a war footing. Sujit De Kolkata

9 T he North-East (N-E) is the new engine of growth, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi while inaugurating the longest, 9.15 km Dodha-Sadiya bridge of the country, linking Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. But can a bridge change the fate of disaster and a poverty-ridden region? In fact, this is much more than a bridge. It is becoming a major land gateway to Southeast Asia Bangkok, Phuket, Singapore and an emerging area of global prosperity. The bridge reduces the travel time from Rupai on NH 37 to Meka/Roing on NH 52 in Arunachal Pradesh from six hours to only an hour. The bridge is quake-resistant and can take a load of 110 tonnes, as against India s main battle tank s weight of 68.6 tonnes. It can troops to Last fortnight was very newsy in Uttar Pradesh, where incidents like murder, kidnapping, rape and theft dominated newspapers. The allegations of jungle raj flew left, right and centre, and this time it is the Samajwadi Party which has started complaining about lawlessness in the State. It is the Bharatiya Janata Party which is now defending the State Government and asking for more time to bring the State back on rails. The rot of 15 years cannot be washed away in just two months give us some times and the situation will improve, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said many a time in his rallies or communication with reporters. What happened in the last two weeks is a wake up call for the Yogi Government. The murder of jewellers in Mathura, kidnapping of India s biggest glass trader in Firozabad, caste violence in Saharanpur and the alleged gang rape of four women in Jewar and brutal murder of one of the family members who protested against the incident, are grisly reminders to BJP that ruling Uttar Pradesh is not child s play. The only comfort for the Yogi Government has been that that the police have acted fast and arrested criminals barring in Jewar where police say nomadic tribes are involved in the crime. This is for sure that no Government can stop crime in any State, but the crime rate can definitely be brought down if the police acts fast and arrests people involved in a crime. This will give confidence to the people that they are safe; in turn, prompt action will act as a deterrent against criminals. The BJP needs to build that confidence. Though two months is a small time to judge the performance of any Government, Chief Minister will have to keep it in mind that the BJP came to power with a promise to improve the law and order situation. The resounding victory the party got in the Assembly election is a testimony to the fact the people believe only the Bharatiya Janata Party can restore law and order in Uttar Pradesh. The Yogi Adityanath Government will have to live up to that expectation. The only mantra to control crime for any Government is to stamp its authority. This can only be achieved if the Government can send fear down the spine of criminal gangs. That s what Kalyan Singh did when he was Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. The Special Task Force of the State police prepared a list of criminals and eliminated them one by one. Sri Prakash Shukla was the top-most criminal and his encounter sent a positive message among people. The same goes true for Mayawati, who gave a free hand to the police to deal with criminals. The Samajwadi Party failed to improve law and order because of its bias. People of one caste and those belonging to one religion were given preference and their crimes were generally overlooked. It is a political challenge for Yogi Adityanath, who has emerged as a no-nonsense politician, to control law and order in the State. But the recent happenings in Uttar Pradesh suggest that he has a long ground to cover. His first brush with the belligerent group was the emergence of some saffron outfits who, in the name of cow vigilantism, spread terror in western Uttar Pradesh. They beat up innocent people on the pretext that they were somehow involved in the cow slaughter business. The trend spread to many parts of Uttar Pradesh, with the saffron gamchcha emerging as sign of terror. Yogi has talked tough and asked the police to arrest whosoever creates trouble. The warning was clear that no one should be spared, however powerful that person may be. This message worked, and in the Saharanpur caste conflict case, the police arrested people from both sides. The Chief Minister did not even spare the MLA from Gorakhpur, Radha Mohan Das Agarwal, considered to be his protégé, and admonished him for talking rough with a trainee IPS officer. These incidents have shown that Yogi has the political will to tame the crime rate. But the big question is whether he has resources under his belt to handle Uttar Pradesh, which is the fourth largest Indian State with an area of 240,928 square km; population-wise it would be the sixth country in the world. It is the most populous State in the country home to over 22 crore people. Thus, proper policing is required to control crimes across the vast State. Police officials vouch that they do not have the resources to handle the situation effectively. It is a fact that Uttar Pradesh does not have enough police force. We do not have enough constables to monitor beat. The Sub-inspectors are over burdened. The result is they are irritated. I will not hesitate to say that sometimes we create criminals. Just to please our bosses we arrest innocent men some of them take to crime because they know how police work, a senior police official said, adding, Police in Uttar Pradesh is suffering from an acute erosion of power. The fact is that criminals do not fear the police anymore. This official, who wanted to be anonymous for obvious reasons, is not off the mark. Human Rights Watch, in its 118-page report, Broken System: Dysfunction, Abuse and Impunity in the Indian Police, recounts how the police works in Uttar Pradesh. The report has a quote of a constable of the State, who says, With all the mental stress, the 24-hour law-and-order duty, the political pressure, a person may turn to violence. How much can a India-Tibet border, McMahon Line, in a jiffy in all-weather conditions. This came with the foundation-stone laying of the region s first All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Indian Agricultural Research Institute. In a day, Modi announced 3,500 crore projects for the region. A total investment of over one lakh crore rupees is envisaged in the next five years. In January this year, another crucial bridge was inaugurated by Union Minister for Shipping and Road Transport Nitin Gadkari on the Brahmaputra at Saraighat. He had announced a number of new road projects and bridges for Assam, worth 65,000 crore over the next five years. The North-East is changing, says Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu. Now we do not have to queue up in Delhi to meet Ministers. They come to us. The region feels its isolation is ending and it is privy to a new development path that connects not only the rest of the country but beyond, to Bangladesh and Southeast Asia. It is now part of India s Act East strategy started by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Even the Dodha-Sadiya bridge was conceptualised by Vajpayee. The new bridge has brought cheers to 40,000 tea growers, including 509 tea gardens and factories in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts, Arunachal Pradesh s Roing and adjacent areas, cut-off from the mainland for centuries. It produces 40 crore kg of green leaf per annum. The North- East will denote new economy, new energy and new empowerment. The Modi Government has taken many diplomatic activities to connect the region. The transit between N-E to other areas in the country is to be faster, as transit through Bangladesh is becoming a reality. Direct bus services, flight from Guwahati to Dhaka, Bangladesh visa office and a joint tour package with Bangladesh, will bring this hilly region closer to the beaches of Cox s Bazar. Bangaldeshis will now have access to Kaziranga sanctuary and can invest in textiles, tissue paper making, food items and ceramics in Assam, person take? We have to keep watch on an accused person, their human rights, but what about us? Living like this 24 hours! We are not claiming that our power makes us born to work all the times. Sometimes we beat or detain illegally, because our working conditions, our facilities are bad. So we are contributing to creating criminals and militants. Under this situation, when a Government asks the police to control crime, the police officials find innovative ways to please their political masters. During the Akhilesh Yadav regime, the most heinous crimes were registered under the special and local laws (SLL) instead of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), to avoid the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) assessments. This anomaly was highlighted by the NCRB in 2015, when it found that under the IPC, only 112 cases were registered in the State, whereas this number was 917 in Delhi. When SLL was added to this figure, the number rose to 1,293. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath needs to discourage such innovations. He has to make the Uttar Pradesh police accountable. He has made a beginning when, on Thursday, he issued directives holding beat constables to the Director General of Police responsible for an escalation in crime. The need of the hour is to make the State police believe it can arrest the crime rate. If the Yogi can do it, he will have won half the battle. (The writer is Chief of Bureau, The Pioneer, Lucknow edition) Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal. Bangladesh imports seven billion dollars of goods a year. Now it will have opportunities to invest to boost their economy. As the Dodha-Sadhia bridge takes Indian troops faster to the China border, the bridge on Feni in Tripura will ferry heavy machines and goods to and from the N-E and the rest of India via Bangladesh through the Chittagong international port, as per a new agreement. Dhaka had earlier agreed to allow India to use the Chittagong port, about 72 km from Tripura s southern border town of Sabroom. The move is aimed at boosting investment and production in the region. A gradual transformation in this area is increase in local production and reduction of imports either China or northern Indian. Two more toll roads are to be built along both banks of the Brahmaputra. The roads, to serve as flood protection walls, would be constructed using silt dredged to improve the navigability of the river. This is expected to improve the farm production and reduce seasonal miseries. The new Indian Agricultural Research Institute is to boost production in the region with the Scheme for Agro Marine Produce Processing and Development of Agro-Processing Clusters. This will be a 6,000 crore umbrella project for seamless transfer of food products for producing to consuming areas. Development is happening in Mizoram too. The Kaladan corridor is poised to link N-E with southeast Asia through multi-modal transit system (KMTT) based on road, river and seas as part of the Act East policy. It is to be developed as a potential sea-gate. The project includes the improvement of Sittwe port in Arakan Province, west Myanmar, construction of an inland waterway on Kaladan river and preparation for a highway transportation system linking up with the Mizoram capital of Aizwal. Consequently, road transport is proposed to the Indian border in Mizoram. The North-East has better prospects, as Indian Ambassador to Thailand Bhagwant Singh Bishnoi said in May For the first time in decades, India will be linked by land to Southeast Asia. India, Thailand and Myanmar are working on a 1,400-kilometre-long tri-nation highway, in a bid to provide a boost to trade and cultural exchanges among the three countries. India is funding renovation of 73 bridges. The planned highway starts from Moreh in India and reach Tak in Thailand. The road will help in transportation of goods and further development of small and medium enterprises in the N-E. Myanmar s Dawei deep-sea port and industrial estate project near the Thailand border is also expected to help further integrate eastern India with Southeast Asian countries. The planned port can be linked up with India s Chennai port as well as Thailand s Laem Chabang Port. The Modi vision is likely to transform the region with high resource lacking people. It is connecting the least linked-up areas to prosperity by opening up avenues beyond the eastern borders and to the seas. (The writer is a senior journalist)

Borwankar, currently Executive Director (Quality), has been appointed as COO with immediate effect and his tenure of executive directorship would be extended for a period of two years from July, 2017, the company said in a BSE filing. In an earlier announcement, the company said the head of its commercial vehicles division Pisharody has resigned citing personal reasons. In a rebuff of party colleague Subramanian Swamy, he defended the equity structure of GSTN saying he did not find anything wrong in Government holding 49 per cent stake in the company. Swamy has repeatedly questioned the shareholding pattern in the GSTN, terming it a shady organisation that was a grave security issue. The present structure of GSTN was decided by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) when Mr P Chidambaram was the finance minister. I have personally reviewed the entire structure and I saw no reason to disagree with him, Jaitley told CNBC TV18. Shareholders of textile major Raymond Ltd on Monday rejected overwhelmingly a proposal for sale of JK House to its promoters and extended family at a substantial discount. The shareholders have also approved reappointment of the company s Chairman and Managing Director Gautam Singhania as director despite proxy advisory firm Institutional Investor Advisory Services (IiAS) recommendation against the proposal. Raymond had asked its shareholders to either reject or approve an offer required to be made by the company under a tripartite agreement entered in 2007 between it, lessor and occupants -- all part of promoters and their extended family -- of JK H o u s e. Under the agreement, the company was required to sell flats at JK House at a substantial discount to the current prevailing market prices. In its AGM today, per cent of total votes polled was against the resolution, while 2.32 per cent was in favour. Commenting on the development, Singhania said the decision by shareholders was in the best interest of the company and shareholders. It is aligned to my personal opinion on this issue expressed earlier, he added. IiAS had red-flagged the proposal saying Raymond s promoters and their extended family were trying to buy the premium property in Motors, he was with Castrol Ltd, a subsidiary of BP. He had also worked with Philips India in various roles. Borwankar, on the other hand, started his career with Tata Motors in 1974, as a Graduate Engineer Trainee. He has been the Executive Director (Quality) since Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reviewed the preparations for the roll-out of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime from July 1 and said it will be a turning point in the country s economy. Describing it as an unprecedented moment in the country s history, he said the creation of the onenation, one-market and onetax system would greatly benefit the common man. He took stock of various elements involved in the rollout and directed the officials that maximum attention be paid to cyber-security in IT systems linked to the GST, the Prime Minister s Office (PMO) said in a statement. The GST, for whose rollout a law was enacted last year, will overhaul the indirect tax regime in the country. The meeting, which lasted for over two-and-a-half hours, was attended by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, and top-most officials from the Ministry of Finance, the PMO and the Cabinet Secretary. The prime minister said the implementation of GST June 21, He has held various executive positions, overseeing and implementing product development, manufacturing operations and quality control initiatives of the company s CV business unit. A mechanical engineer from IIT, Kanpur, Borwankar has also played significant roles in setting up greenfield projects of the company. Tata Motors has witnessed sales of its commercial vehicles slowing down in the domestic market. Its CV sales grew by just 0.45 per cent to 3,05,620 units in In May 2017, the company s overall commercial vehicles sales in the domestic market were at 23,606 units, down 13 per cent from the same month last year. from July 1 is the culmination of the concerted efforts of all stakeholders, including political parties, trade and industry bodies, the statement said. He described the GST as a turning point for the economy, unprecedented in history, the PMO said. During the course of the RBI on Monday said its prompt corrective action (PCA), initiated in case of some public sector banks with high NPAs, is a supervision tool and does not constrain normal banking operations for the public. The Reserve Bank has put Dena Bank, IDBI Bank, Indian Overseas Bank and UCO Bank, under the PCA in view of their mounting non-performing assets. RBI s statement comes in the backdrop of some misinformed communication circulating in some section of media as well as social media platforms, about the PCA framework. The PCA framework has been in operation since December 2002 and the guidelines issued in April this year is only a revised version of the earlier framework, the central bank said. The Reserve Bank, under its supervisory framework, uses various measures/tools to maintain sound financial health of banks. Mumbai from the company at throwaway rates which will result in loss of over 650 crore to the company and its shareholders. Stating that protecting shareholders interest is of paramount importance, Singhania said Raymond is on a growth path and making it future ready for enhanced value creation for all stakeholders. The shareholders have also approved reappointment of Singhania as director with per cent of votes polled in favour and 9.46 per cent against the resolution. The growth rate has definitely slowed down because of which opportunities in the industry, especially for new recruitment, is down, Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan said. Because, when the growth rate comes down, there is less need of new people. Second, the opportunities for promotion are also less because you don t need more people. You don t need people at the higher level because there is no upward movement, the former CEO of the Bengaluruheadquartered IT major told the news agency in an interview. I haven t seen or heard anything about massive layoffs. There is always tightening of promotion process and I think that will happen automatically, he said. Promotions are going to be tighter. (Performance) evaluations are going to be more tougher, said the Chairman of Axilor Ventures, an early stage startup accelerator and venture fund. But Gopalakrishnan said such developments are natural in the sector as they have happened in the past -- after the internet bubble burst in 2001 and the 2008 financial crisis. There are multiple factors affecting the IT industry now - - growth slowing down because economies in which Indian companies operate -- the US, Europe -- are slowing down and, secondly, because of the base effect as the industry is very large now, and also because of uncertainty on the Visa front. Asked about some reports on efforts to prop up a union in the IT industry, he said he firmly believes that employees in the sector are well paid, very well taken care off, (and) they already have choices (to change jobs). For me, forming a union (in the IT industry) is a bad idea. Union may make sense when you are working in a factory. This (IT industry) is not that, people have choices, (they are) very well paid, the former president of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) said. On Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy s statement that IT companies can protect the jobs of youngsters if senior executives take pay cuts, Gopalakrishnan said, I don t see massive layoffs or anything like that. So, I don t want to meeting, the prime minister specifically reviewed aspects of implementation such as IT readiness, HR readiness, training and sensitisation of officers, query handling mechanism, and monitoring, the statement said. He was informed that GST systems such as IT infrastructure, training of officials, integration with banks, and enrolment of existing taxpayers will be in readiness well in time for the July 1 implementation date, it added. Information security systems were discussed in detail. A Twitter handle has been started for real-time answering of queries. An All India toll-free phone has also been activated for this purpose. comment on that. Regarding job opportunities in the IT sector, he said, There is still requirement for people with major sciences, (skills in) artificial intelligence, new paradigms on the mobile platform, on IoT: this is an industry that s always looking for talent with right technical capability. On if he expects protectionist tendencies to persist in the US and Europe, two key markets of Indian IT companies, Gopalakrishnan said, I believe it s part of the cycle because all economies are growing, without creating new jobs. There is a tendency to protect jobs. Having said that, if you see data from the US, there are 600,000 unfilled jobs in IT sector. People with right skills will get recruited, he said. I also believe that companies (in the US) are finding it difficult to recruit right people and they will come to India and set up operations by themselves. So, the IT back-offices will continue to move to India, whether in an outsourced model and direct model, he added.

11 Powered by KAUSHAMBI & NEHRU NAGAR, GHAZIABAD, UP P arkinson s disease is considered to be an elder illness, but Rahul (name changed) was diagnosed with it when he was just 34. His symptoms began with him not being able to unlock his door or type correctly on his computer. As they increased, he developed a tremor while driving and had a car accident. Parkinson s is a common neurodegenerative disease. Over 10 million people are living with the disease globally. Even though its prevalence in India is less as compared to other countries, India s total burden is quite high due to the huge population. As we observed World Parkinson s Day, it is important to educate people about early detection, management and the positive impact exercise can have on overall wellness. There is no standardised test to diagnose Parkinson s disease. The only way is clinical information provided by patients and results from neurological tests. Since this disease is considered to affect only older people, many of our diagnoses are of people who have had the disease for some years. What we do not realise is that signs and symptoms of Parkinson s can begin at a much younger age. Those experiencing struggles in movement or coordination should get tested. Even though there is no cure, symptoms can be managed with medication and even exercise. Parkinson's is a chronic and progressive movement disorder, which means that the symptoms continue to worsen over time. It involves the malfunction and death of vital neurons (nerve cells) in one section of the brain. This malfunction produces the chemical, dopamine, which sends messages to that part of the brain which controls the body s movement and co-ordination. As the disease progresses, the amount of dopamine produced decreases rendering people unable to control normal movements. The cause remains unknown, and currently has no cure, but medication and surgery have proven to manage its symptoms. Tremors in the limbs and face, slowness of movement, rigidity of limbs and trunk, and impaired balance and co-ordination are some symptoms. Small handwriting, loss of smell, trouble sleeping, constipation, dizziness or fainting are also associated with the disease. Even though Parkinson s affects a person s ability to move, exercise helps keep muscles strong, increases flexibility and mobility. Progression of the disease cannot be stopped, but exercise can help prevent stiffening of joints and improves balance. The type of exercise that works best depends on a patient s symptoms, fitness level, and overall health. Generally, exercises that stretch the limbs through the full range of motion are encouraged. We encourage patients to exercise regularly to keep their limbs functioning properly. The movement of joints allows oxygen into the muscles strengthening them. A minimum of 30 minutes a day has proven to be beneficial for patients. We work closely with physical therapists to create personal exercise programmes for all our patients depending on their requirements. Exercise not only improves a person s well-being but also helps reduce depression or anxiety. For people with Parkinson s, moving around does not come as naturally as it once did. In order to increase your confidence moving, you have to move. Tips to keep in mind while exercising: Warm-up before beginning exercise & cool down at the end. Exercise facial muscles, jaw, and voice whenever possible by singing or reading aloud, exaggerate your lip movements, and chew food vigorously Water aerobics and swimming are easier on the joints and require less balance Always work out in a safe environment to avoid any potential dangers Use support of a railing whenever required while practicing balancing postures. If standing up is a problem, exercise on a mat on the floor of even in bed Engage in activities or hobbies you enjoy like gardening, yoga, dancing, walking, or swimming to keep the muscles moving. Curd contains calcium, which plays a huge role in strengthening bones and teeth. It also contains phosphorous that combines with calcium to promote bone growth. Eating curd regularly will help prevent diseases like arthritis and osteoporosis. It reduces risks of coronary heart diseases as it doesn't lead to the formation of cholesterol. This in turn will prevent hypertension and promote better cardiovascular health. This is not all eating at least 500 gm of curd daily will help shed some of that belly fat. My daughter-in-law developed osteoporosis at a young age so I dug into my grandma s remedy for weak bones. Curd for lactose intolerant is good enough too. Tofu is helpful, more than paneer. Go for the seeds: Sesame seeds are full of nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and Vitamin K and D. Consume at least 1/4th cup, either roasted or dried daily for study bones. You could make chutney, have it in dahi or sprinkle it on salads for best results. S cientists have developed a new artificial intelligence system that can predict how long a person will live simply by looking at the images of their organs. The system, developed by researchers from University of Adelaide in Australia, analysed the medical imaging of 48 patients' chests and was able to predict which of them would die within five years, with 69 per cent accuracy. The study, published in the journal M ost of us know that Ayurveda is one of the oldest systems of medicine. Yet, interesting, it is still treated as a alternative system of treatment for almost all of us. This, despite the fact that there is a cure for almost all diseases in this traditional healthcare system and a survey saying the 89 per cent people would prefer to go to an Ayurveda doctor. One is told that there are several factors responsible for this even though most people would like to go for a cure that has negligible sideeffects. First, unlike allopathy, where every one has a family doctor who can be referred to others, there is not such referral point when it comes to Ayurvedic doctors. Not because there is dearth of qualified doctors The Capital alone has around 20,000 but because this medicinal system is never the first line of treatment for most. According to Ram N Kumar, cofounder Nirogstreet.com that fact that people have little faith, no point of reference and few people who are not qualified giving the whole system a bad name, are main reasons why this system is struggling to come as a first point of treatment. In order to bust these myths, a festival Oja was organised in the Capital where over 300 Ayurveda doctors came together to work with pure Ayurveda practioners, training them and connecting them general public. As per an independent surveys it was found that most of the time a person looking for Ayurveda treatment or To improve our immunity there are so many things in the kitchen that can be used like tulsi. Eating a few leaves is a great disinfectant Then there is golden latte turmeric shake which is the most expensive drink abroad found in many cafes. It has become very popular since haldi is anti-cancerous Don t drink water immediately after a meal Since people don t know Ayurvedic doctors around them, there is need to spread awareness through write-ups and articles in the media about which doctor to go to. A treatment that has done wonders need not be from a known hospital, there are many smaller clinics that treating many serious diseases one can write about these. Ask what they doing? Ask for their degree? See if they are degree is BAMS is equivalent to MBBS; then there are doctors with MD in Ayurveda like you have in allopathy Ask if there are cross-practicing? Never hesitate while asking questions There are several platforms that impart a lot of information on this system of treatment. These website have only verified doctors which have been whetted after much questioning. Out of 20,000 Ayurveda doctors in the Capital, Nirogstreet.com only has 75 on its panel There is need to tackle negative publicity around use to heavy metals in Ayurveda medicines. Yes, the system uses metals but these are for a prescribed condition by a qualified doctor, the same way one goes to an allopath who prescribes steroids for treatment. There is need to understand that anything that has an effect has side-effects even Ayurveda. One can t pop Ayurveda drugs for a continuous consultation is discouraged due to lack of awareness of a qualified and reliable doctor. It is proven that early adoption of Ayurveda under supervision of pure Ayurveda doctor make you immune from many diseases. So efforts are on to bridge this gap by certifying pure Ayurveda doctors and getting all of them available on one platform Kumar explains. He tells you that people need to understand that Ayurveda is a system of medicine, dadi ke nukske is not medicine; drinking kada is not taking medicine. Medicine can only be prescribed by a doctor after he has taken your body details based on a person s prakrati since it works on the premise of vat, pitt and kaf. Since it period of time. It has to be taken only for the said period of time and not more. There is need to build a doctorsociety connect by holding small workshops. One has to change the psyche of the people. For generations we have been dependent on allopathy, it will take time to convince people to go to an Ayurvedic doctor. Dr G Geetha Krishnan, a senior consultant in Ayurveda at Medanta: The Medicity Hospital works on everybody, there is no reason why people should not consider this as first line of treatment. Agrees Dr Pooja Sabharwal of Chaudhary Brahm Prakash Ayurved Charak Sansthan in the Capital. Ayurveda has cure for almost every ailment under the sun. You name it and there is cure for it here. It is a 5,000- year-old medicinal practice yet few know that there is a Ministry of Ayush established in It is sad that people come to us as a secondary or even tertiary line of treatment, Dr Pooja says. The roadblock is that since this treatment takes a long time, people shy away. In Ayurveda, the doctor will first see your history and then prescribe medicines, give dietary restrictions. But the advantage is that the cure is permanent. The restrictions that this treatment puts is due to several factors. There is so much toxicity around us; their is air pollution, we eat so much junk food, to cure this, there is need to put the patient on certain restrictions to cure him, Dr Pooja says. She also tells you that if it is migraine or a skin ailment, or if one wants to increase immunity, etc, one can do to an Ayurveda doctor as a first line of treatment. But if one has a more serious health issue like a heart problem, HIV, cancer, etc one can have an integrated approach. Each patsy has its own benefits. It is written in Ayurveda agar hum vish matra mein lete hain to woh aushadhi ban sakti hai aur agar hum aushadhi ko bematra mein lete toh woh vish ban jata hai, Dr Pooja tells you. Scientific Reports, has implications for the early diagnosis of serious illness and medical intervention. While the researchers could not identify exactly what the computer system was seeing in the images to make its predictions, the most confident predictions were made for patients with severe chronic diseases such as emphysema and congestive heart failure. The researchers hope to apply the same techniques to predict other important medical conditions, such as the onset of heart attacks. Flex your bones D id you know that arthritis affects around 15 per cent of the people in India? Not only this, this percentage is higher than diseases like diabetes, AIDS and cancer. And it is the rise in osteoporosis that is the main reason. Doctors tell you that such is the situation that there is need for a national programme on arthritis. The reality of the arthritis virtually cripples you. The patient attending the OPD are mostly from the moderate and severe category and had they come earlier in the mild stage, it could have been possible to prevent the disease and suffering to quiet an extent. Around 45 per cent of male and 55 per cent of female suffer from it, Dr Shushil Sharma, senior orthopedian and chairman, Arthritis Foundation of India, says who has written a book Bones and Breaks which is an easy to understand guide for those with arthritis. Causes: Obesity is the main cause. Other causatives are knee injury; hypertension; family history; diabetes and thyroid. It is found out that diabetic patient have tendency to develop severe osteoporosis than a person who does not have diabetes. Who are vulnerable: It is found out that people with low social economic backgrounds have greater tendency of getting arthritis. Also people with busy occupation that involves physical jobs have the danger of having the condition. People who have weak muscles have high chances of suffering from the disease. Reason: Studies showed that lack of awareness among the citizens leading to a late diagnosis, seeking medical help only at a severe stage. Comparing to male there is a greater incidence among woman suffering from osteoarthritis. Prevention: Doctors say that intake of antioxidant like vitamin C, calcium and vitamin D should also be taken adequately. Taking adequate rest. Exercise like, swimming are one of the great exercise to build up muscles around joints. Maintain ideal body weight. Yoga and other alternative therapies have been scientifically documented to complement the use of drugs. Avoid over use and prevent any injury to the joints. Pay attention to what your body tells you. If you feel pain, don t ignore it. Immediately consult a doctor. Maintain blood sugar under control, regular thyroid treatment is must and blood pressure needs full management and monitoring.

12 the last three months, saying with other democratic governments we will agree ways to "we cannot deny that the threat ritish Prime Minister from Islamist extremism is one regulate cyberspace and prevent the spread of extremism BTheresa May on Monday of the gravest we face." said the three terrorists responsible for the London attack have been identified and their names would be revealed soon, even as police conducted fresh raids in two more places. In all seven women and five men aged between 19 and 60 were arrested under the Terrorist Act in Barking yesterday. A 55-year-old man was later released without charge. "All the three terrorists responsible for the Saturday night's terror attack at London Bridge have been identified and their names will released by police as soon as operationally possible," May said, answering questions after her address at the Royal United Services Institute. According to the Scotland Yard, one of the terrorists carried Irish identity card. Seven people died and 48 others injured, 21 of them seriously, in the terror attack, the police said. "A number of people have been detained," police said in a statement after two early morning raids in east London. London police chief Cressida Dick told BBC TV that they have seized "a huge amount of forensic material" after going through the van used in the attack "very very carefully". "A very high priority for us is to try to understand whether they were working with anybody else," she said. The first victim of the attack has been named as Canadian national Christine Archibald who worked in a homeless shelter until she moved to Europe to be with her fiance. May referred to the three terror attacks in the UK during She said, "I believe it is right that the UK is engaged in taking on and defeating groups like ISIS and their like around the world. It is in our own national interest to do so, and it is in the interests of the wider world. "But as our efforts to defeat them overseas are ever more successful, they are increasingly seeking to spread their poisonous ideology and to prey on the weak and vulnerable in our own countries, inspiring them to commit acts of terror here at home. They exploit the safe spaces of the internet and social media and they exploit them in the real world too." She said the UK has led the world in developing a strategy for preventing violent extremism, and it has been highly successful. But she admitted "we must do more - much more - to take on and defeat the evil ideology of Islamist extremism that preaches hatred, sows division, and promotes sectarianism...we must deny it the safe spaces it needs to take root and grow." Asserting that Britain will continue to support military action to destroy ISIS in Iraq and Syria, she said, "working and terrorist planning online." She said that her government would do more to deny this ideology the physical space to breed in the UK. "It means refusing to tolerate extremism of any kind in our country." "This is what we must do if we are to come together as a country and tackle this extremism in our midst - not just violent extremism, but the whole spectrum of extremism, starting with the bigotry and hatred that can so often turn to violence too," the prime minister said. With the Brexit negotiations beginning just 11 days after the June 8 polls, May said, "we have no time to waste. So I offer myself as Prime Minister once more, with a resolute determination to get on with the job of delivering Brexit, confidence that I can get a deal that works for all, and belief that I have the vision, the plan, the will and the experience to fulfil the promise of Brexit and build a better Britain." Answering questions, she said the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan was doing an "excellent job" and US President Donald Trump was wrong in withdrawing from the Paris Climate Deal. Peshawar: An outspoken Pakistani student killed by a lynch mob was falsely accused of blasphemy, according to an official report that added his murder was organised by faculty members and rival students. Mashal Khan, 23, was stripped, beaten and shot before being thrown from the second floor of his hostel at the Abdul Wali Khan university in northwest Mardan in April. AFP rowds swelled to several Cthousand as demonstrators from varying groups converged in downtown Portland, Oregon, in the wake of the fatal stabbing of two men who tried to stop another man's anti- Muslim tirade. A pro-donald Trump free speech rally organised by a conservative group called Patriot Prayer drew hundreds to a plaza near City Hall. Rally organiser Joey Gibson told the crowd that the goal is to wake up the liberty movement. "It's OK to be a conservative in Portland," he said yesterday. Demonstrators chanted "USA" and held banners in support of President Donald Trump. The group was met by hundreds of counter-protesters organised by immigrant rights, religious and labour groups. Many of them filled the steps of City Hall, drummed and played music and held signs, some of which read "Our city is greater than hate" and "Black lives matter." Some chanted "love, not hate" and "Go home, fascists." Geneva: Weeks after becoming US President Donald Trump's ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley described the UN's Human Rights Council as so corrupt. Expect some sparks to fly, then, when she addresses that body for the first time. En route to the West Asia, Haley drops in today at the meeting in Geneva to deliver a speech and take part in a "side event" focusing on rights in Venezuela. Her oneday appearance is shaping up as perhaps the standout event of the council's three-week session because the US has a reputation as a key human-rights defender and is the single largest donor to the UN. Her boss, however, has shaken up that image and raised doubts about America's global commitments. Trump is seeking deep cuts in US funding for international organisations. On Thursday, he announced the US will withdraw from the Paris climate accord, denting Washington's moral capital. Last month in Riyadh, he announced hundreds of billions of dollars in arms sales over 10 years to Saudi Arabia, which is leading a military campaign in neighbouring Yemen that has killed hundreds of civilians. AP srael had a secret plan to det- an atomic bomb in Ionate Egypt in the event that it faced defeat during the 1967 Arab- Israel war, a leading American think tank said on Monday, citing newly released documents. The operation was never carried out, as Israel swiftly vanquished its enemies in six days. But details about the doomsday scenario, in which Israel planned to set off a nuclear weapon atop a mountain in the Sinai Peninsula, shed new light on the fearful climate at the time. It also could undermine Israel's decades-long policy of nuclear ambiguity. The Nuclear Proliferation International History Project of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington unveiled a website today devoted to Operation Shimshon, the codename for the hastily arranged contingency plan of placing an improvised nuclear device in Sinai to be detonated upon the Prime Minister's orders. The operation's name, Hebrew for Samson, invoked the biblical figure of great power and aimed to scare Arab armies into quitting their offensive should Israel face what was feared to be an existential threat. The new information was based on interviews with Yitzhak Yaakov, a retired brigadier general who in 1967 was the chief liaison between the Israeli military and the civilian defense industries, including those overseeing the nuclear project. In a series of interviews in 1999 with Avner Cohen, a leading scholar of Israeli nuclear history, Yaakov detailed how he came up with the plans at his superiors' urging and how a pair of helicopters was chosen for the mission along with forces from the elite Sayeret Matkal unit. The selected landing site was a mountain in eastern Sinai, about 20 kilometers from the large Egyptian military complex in Abu Ageila. There, the semi-assembled "spider" device was to be connected with its nuclear core and linked to ignition wires. "You've got an enemy, and he says he's going to throw you to the sea. Comey, ousted last month amid the FBI investigation into possible Trump campaign ties to Russia, is set to testify Thursday before the Senate intelligence committee. The public hearing is expected to shed light on his private conversations with Trump in the weeks before his dismissal, including one discussion in which Trump allegedly asked Comey to drop an investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn and his Russian contacts. There's been no final decision as to whether Trump would invoke executive privilege, and the matter remains under discussion, according to two administration officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations. Trump's known to change his mind on major issues. CNN anchor is being Alashed out by netizens for allegedly making a "racist" remark against Indian- American national spelling champion Ananya Vinay, assuming that the 12-year-old is "used to using" Sanskrit due to her heritage. California resident Vinay was being interviewed by CNN anchors Alisyn Camerota and Chris Cuomo following her win last week at the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee. The sixth-grader had correctly spelled the word 'marocain' and became the 13th consecutive winner from the Indian-American community at the annual spelling bee championship. Towards the end of the interview, Camerota asked Vinay to spell 'covfefe', the word recently used by President Donald Trump in one of his tweets that took the social media by storm with people guessing what the US leader could have meant by that word. ive persons, including a Fwoman, were killed at a workplace in the US city of Orlando when a disgruntled former employee went on a shooting spree before killing himself. The incident happened at Fiamma, a business on North Forsyth Road near Hanging Moss Road near Orlando, the Orange County Sheriff s Office (OCSO) said, calling it a "tragic incident". Four died at the scene of business. One victim succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The 45-year-old shooter a former "disgruntled employee" who was fired in April then killed himself, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said. "OCSO working shooting scene that has stabilised. A total of 130 people will be affected by the move, an interior ministry announcement published in the Official Gazette said, adding that the three-month deadline started on Monday. The government says the abortive July coup aimed at toppling President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was engineered by an Islamic movement led by Gulen, who has denied the charges. The list also includes two lawmakers from the pro- Kurdish Peoples' Democracy Party (HDP) Faysal Sariyildiz and Tugba Hezer. Ankara: Turkey on Monday refused to budge on its decision to refuse German lawmakers permission to visit troops stationed at a Turkish air base, saying it expected "positive steps" on Turkey's requests for Germany to crackdown on Kurdish rebels and alleged coup plotters. Speaking at a joint news conference with his visiting German counterpart, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Turkey would allow German legislators to visit a NATO base in the central province of Konya, but not Incirlik Air Base, where some 270 German troops are stationed with Tornado reconnaissance jets and a refueling plane. 13 U nlike the tricky, self-serving Black Widow in the Marvel Universe or the ambiguous Catwoman, Diana is pure of spirit. Today, Wonder Woman is redefining the genre of female super humans. In a world of only women, there are no phallic structures. At least that s how Patty Jenkins imagined the island home of the Amazons and their heroic princess Diana, who grows up to become Wonder Woman. Like columns? They didn t make that much sense to me, Jenkins said in a recent interview. They felt like an imposition on landscape, which didn t feel like something that women are jonesing to do. As the director of Wonder Woman, Jenkins is creating new worlds for women both onscreen and off. Not only did she help dream up the look of the Amazon island and hire scores of actresses to serve as its resident warriors, she s the first woman to direct a major superhero movie, and her success could pave the way for others. As a child, she was inspired by Wonder Woman, describing Lynda Carter s portrayal on TV as the embodiment of everything that I wanted to be as a woman. When I was playing Wonder Woman, I was able to do incredible things and save the world, the 45-year-old filmmaker said. That s the feeling she hopes to evoke with viewers of Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot plays the title character, who discovers her superpowers and fights for justice alongside humans after following a charming spy (Chris Pine) to London during World War I. The Israeli-born Gadot didn t grow up with Wonder Woman, but she was always on the lookout for powerful characters to play. Usually the women are the damsel in distress or the heartbroken woman or the sidekick, but in real life it s not the case. In real life, we bring life. We have babies. We have careers. We are so many other things, said Gadot, a 32-year-old married mother of two. Wonder Woman symbolises the magnificence of a woman and how amazing women are. And I think that it s an important movie not only for women and girls, but it s also great for boys and men. You can t empower women if you don t educate the men and you don t teach the boys, so as much as it s important for girls to be exposed and see this movie, it s important for boys to have a strong female figure that they can look up to. Gadot says that young women need a character like Wonder Woman in their lives. The 31-year-old wants girls to have someone to look up to when they re growing up. First of all, she (Wonder Woman) doesn t see that difference between any gender. It s not even an issue. She comes from this world where men and women hey may have had different incep- in music but their roads even- Ttions tually met at one point, leading to the creation of Sachin-Jigar. For Sachin Sanghvi and Jigar Saraiya, music was certainly their first love. The duo belong to typical Gujarati families where you either get into the family business or choose a white collared profession. Not surprising, their relatives did not think highly of their choice. When we were music arrangers our relatives thought we were a part of some orchestra; they didn t know that our passion lay in composition, says Sachin. Despite that, their immediate families supported them at a crucial time. Fifteen years back, choosing to support our dreams required a lot of courage on behalf of our parents. Back then, when reality shows didn t exist as viable platforms that gave everyone an opportunity to showcase their talent, our parents let us identify and pursue our passion, he adds. About their working experience, Jigar feels, We have a difference of opinion but then we realise that our bond is strong and goes beyond music. There is no ambition in this combination. It s like we have sworn till death do us apart. We eventually find a halfway solution in case of a difference of opinion. Sachin believes, I think creative arguments and fights only help us to make songs that we are proud of. Discussions and disruptions are part and parcel of the process of creativity. Sachin and Jigar have drawn inspiration from a variety of sources. Jigar mentions, We always draw inspiration from people, experiences and life in general. Music exists in every iota of the universe; you just need to be keen enough to recognise it. Talking about their experience as music arrangers with the legends Pritam Chakraborty and A.R. Rahman, they explain, It is wonderful to witness and assist such music legends when they are at the peak of their careers. It s amazing to see how they are able to skilfully depict the same song in their own way. We have worked for so many people in the industry as producers and arrangers but our stint with Pritam Sir was much longer and more enriching. We have learnt a lot from him and we can t put it down in words. Working with him was an emotional journey that has helped us become What is Apocalypse s big problem with the world in 1983? Oscar Isaac: That he doesn t rule it. I think Apocalypse has a problem with the fact that the weak have taken over the earth. And they hide behind their weapons, their systems of government, their money and their class. And they are subjugating the truly powerful. So what he wants to do is to wipe away all of these weak-willed, weak-minded people and let the strong survive. Why does Apocalypse recruit the four horsemen to help him cleanse the earth? Oscar Isaac: Because is a God really a God if no one worships him? I would say probably not. So just like any good cult leader does, you find people that are in a low point in their lives and you offer them something. And what he who we are today. These days, a lot of artists forget that making music is a long drawn process; you need technical knowledge, expert guidance, a lot of personal experimentation and hand work to reach the pinnacle of success. Sachin adds, I feel that Rahman sir is the simplest human being alive. He gave us a lot of perspective about how something simple can be made complicated and vice-versa. There were a couple of times when we had the chance to work with Rahman sir. We distinctly remember that once we had taken our work to him and upon viewing it, he had remarked that it s good but it s a simple offers them is more power, tapping into their pain, rage and hatred, thereby unleashing their power. This changes them. How big is the showdown between Apocalypse and the X-Men? Oscar Isaac: The showdown between Apocalypse and the X-Men in the third act is incredibly epic. I can feel the anticipation. It s the X-Men movie that I ve been waiting for where you see all of them team up to take down somebody. It s very rewarding. song so don t overcomplicate it. That just meant the world to us because that kind of appreciation for our work came from a maestro. Their journey started from Gujarati music. Jigar feels that Every form of music that is pleasing to the ears can be a part of Bollywood music. This flexibility with style and openness to accept a wide variety of music is what makes Bollywood such a welcoming platform. Here, you can achieve the fame that other platforms cannot provide. Sachin feels that, The heart will always lie in folk music. We have absorbed so much from folk music and our own tradition that our minds first make music in the mother tongue. Sachin remarks, We don t want to commit ourselves to a particular style of music, we always try to look first at the script and get a grip of the situation before committing to it. There is no set formula. Sometimes Sachin has an idea and I build upon it, or vice versa. We can arrange, compose and ideate. Nothing is planned, it is an ongoing, dynamic and creative process, Jigar adds. They agree to the fact that today s music lacks melody. However, Jigar believes that films represent the times we are living in and today s generation primarily wants to dance when they listen to music. They want their music to set the stage for dancing. Music is not only confined to those who seek soulful melodies; they form just one segment of the listeners. Sachin feels, Today s audience isn t well informed about what good music making should be like and so they only look for Punjabi rap or dance music. Half of the films have run-of-the-mill songs, which will probably remain in people s counsciousness for 15 days and then be played only at weddings. We call such music, popcorn music. I am not against it, I am just saying that we are undergoing a transition phase. They summarise their upcoming projects as: Reload, IshqVishq 2 and Haseena. All these films have a different approach and we will try to deliver something that stands out in each of our songs. These projects will classify us in a new segment altogether. Fans won t be able to tell that this is a Sachin- Jigar song. That is the extent to which we are undergoing experimentation this year. Their only advice for future musicians is to keep experimenting and evolving. Implementing variations to your comfortable style will always give you good results, they say as they sign off. How did you balance the character s cruelty and violence with his unique kind of humanity? Oscar Isaac: Apocalypse is like the God of the Old Testament. He can be jealous. He can be very angry. Yet he can be charismatic. So depending on what he needs he has the violence of nature. It s an indifferent violence. But unlike nature, he does actually get pleasure out of power. (Watch X-Men: Apocalypse on Sunday June 11 at 1:00 pm and 9:00 pm on Star Movies and Star Movies HD) are equal and it s not a thing to be a man or to be a woman. She feels that she can do everything and she will go for it, Gadot said. She s a peace seeker; she wouldn t go and look to start a battle or a fight. She would try to solve it in any other different way, but I think that s what s beautiful about Wonder Woman, she added. Wonder Woman was created in 1941, yet this is her first solo feature film. Jenkins wanted to bring her to the big screen for more than a decade, but studios doubted the appeal of the lasso-wielding superheroine. I don t understand why somebody who has had zero big blockbuster representation for 75 years still has 15 little girls a minute coming to my door dressed as her every Halloween, like how does that not equal dollar signs? Jenkins said. Connie Nielsen, who plays Diana s mother, Amazon queen Hippolyta, also didn t grow up with Wonder Woman, but had myriad other models of powerful women as a child in Denmark. The Denmark I grew up in was a Denmark in which women were, in fact, fully liberated and the whole world had been opened up to us, she said. In the magazines during the early 80s, it was men who were photographed doing the vacuum cleaning in the ads for vacuum cleaners and women were no longer posing on the Ford Mustang. So Nielsen felt entitled to question why, on an island populated by only women, her character would wear high heels. She and Gadot, both statuesque, wear wedges in the film. I actually had that conversation several times, and Patty was adamant, Nielsen said. She really felt like you stand a different way (in heels), and you do. The costumes, including the wedges, had to be considered during the physical training, which included horseback riding, archery and swords(wo)manship. For Robin Wright, who was raised on the Wonder Woman TV show, training and shooting with the Amazons was the best part. I think it was a little daunting for the men because it was very unusual. I think there were like 120 Amazons, said Wright, who plays the warrior Antiope, Diana s aunt and teacher. That s a different energy on the set, and great for us. We just felt like a team of women that had each other s backs. She called Jenkins the biggest cheerleader of them all. Jenkins is thinking about what Wonder Woman might mean for a new generation of aspiring superheroes and filmmakers. I am a filmmaker who wants to make successful films, of course. I want my film to be celebrated, she said. But there s a whole other person in me who s sitting and watching what s happening right now, who so hopes, not for me, that this movie defies expectations. Because I want to see the signal will send to the world. Warner Bros. studio on Monday said the tickets sold on Sunday turned out to be even higher than it estimated over the weekend. Warner Bros. previously had announced a $100.5 million North American haul. alman Khan s who is currently pro- Tubelight, has Tiger Zinda Smoting Hai with Katrina Kaif, a dance film with Remo D Souza which is not ABCD 3, Dabangg 3 with Arbaaz Khan and an untitled movie with his sister Alvira Khan Agnihotri. Amidst this schedule, Salman confirmed to a daily that director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has approached him for a film. We ve been discussing a script. If it does happen, it ll happen only after I finish all the films that I ve taken up, he confirmed. Later when asked about it, Salman told media, It s a rumour. Don t panic. However, after this, if he (SLB) gets any idea, I am open. If the project pans out, the two would be reuniting after a decade, their last film together was Saawariya in Salman and Bhansali had a fallout when the director chose to cast Salman s arch rival Shah Rukh Khan in Devdas in 2002, and sidestepped him to cast Hrithik Roshan in Guzaarish and Ranveer Singh in Bajirao Mastani.

14 D aughter and disciple of legendary Kuchipudi exponent Raja Radha Reddy, Yamini Reddy, follows his path today. A young star of the Kuchipudi firmament, she, with her poised ability to hold difficult balancing poses along with her finely honed sense of rhythm can easily dazzle audiences. Tell about An evening of storytelling. Kuchipudi is a very beautiful dance style, a combination of Natva Mala and Natya Mala. Basically, it is a temple dance and a theatre form. I wanted to bring out the beauty of kuchipudi, which is its very uniqueness. I chose the title An evening of story telling through which I plan to tell stories about the creation and the evolution of man with dance as my medium of expression. I m also going to do a very popular Ram bhajan composed by Tulsidas. You had done your first dance performance at the age of three. Do you remember anything of it? I don t remember much about it but my parents usually tell me about what happened that day. I have their memories. I ve always been very crazy about dance. When I was very young, I use to trouble them a lot by repeatedly saying that, I want to perform on stage just like you. They would humour me by making me wear a costume and then leave me in the changing room. They used to say that they ll call me on stage later. They did that for a few performances. Soon afterwards, when I had discovered that this was only a trick to keep me away from the stage, I got quite angry. Then during one performance I ran out on stage and started hitting my dad during the middle of his performance. I began accusing him of not calling me on stage and never giving me the chance to dance in front of everyone, in the same way that he did. The audience found it very funny. They decided to let me perform whatever small little thing I could do. After seeing me dance, they were quite amazed, especially given my age. What is your favourite aspect about dance; is it the ability to tell stories? The thing about dance for me is that it touches my soul directly. I feel rejuvenated and gain a creative space where I can express myself. Dance is also a beautiful art form that coordinates the mind, body and soul, particularly an Indian dance. We practice training our body to the extent that we end up forgetting about it. The heart supersedes the mind. As dancers, we aspire to reach something much beyond our physical bodies. Engaging all these three aspects of ourselves: body, mind and soul is a very difficult and long process that any dancer will have to undergo. Once it does, magic happens. That magic is also created on stage. The first step always involves mastering the body so that you eventually become an instrument for allowing all the feelings to flow through you. How is kuchipudi received across the world? Do they understand the story or the emotions that are trying to be conveyed? Dance is a universal language, which can be understood by everyone. So, even though the song and its lyrics may belong to different languages, if the dance itself is performed effectively then anybody can understand it. When we travel abroad, even though the people there may not know anything about our dance form, our Gods or the stories related to them, they do nonetheless understand what we are doing on stage. They thoroughly enjoy it. Of course, a little bit of explanation is provided to them before the performance begins. We have performed in so many places where we have received standing ovations. I am sure we have managed to get through to them. In fact, once I had gone to Russia to perform. There, an old Russian lady came up to me and she was in tears. That s how much she had appreciated the performance. Dance has that power to move people. Your family has just celebrated the silver jubilee of teaching dance to so many young Indians. They are renowned dancers themselves. In the light of this, do you feel pressure to meet up to their expectations? I guess when I was younger and had just started doing solo performances, I used to feel the pressure. Now I ve grown beyond that. I ve realised that I do this for myself and not for my parents. I dance because I love to dance and not because I have to carry on a legacy or anything like that. That s all that matters at the end of the day. If I do feel any pressure it s only because I know that I need to put up a good show or with regard to any experimentation that I m doing with the presentation of the performance. When you dance, do you think from the audience s perspective as to whether they will understand your intentions or not, or do you value your experience of the dance more? I try to strike a balance between the two because both are very important. I don t want to dilute a traditional dance just to please the audience but at the same time neither do I wish to inundate them with a lot of technical pictures which they cannot understand. Ultimately a compromise has to be made, through which the audience can enjoy what they are watching and the dancer can enjoy what he or she is doing. To achieve this, I don t really mess with the grammar of the dance form itself. Instead I try to make the presentation of my art form more interesting and different to what my parents used to do. This could include the introduction to the dance, or its narration or even the lighting and costumes. I play around with the presentation of the dance but not with the dance itself. What kind of preparation do you go through for your performances? What frame of mind are you in, since you ve got a performance is this week? We are still getting everything together. Right now, all I want is to put up a good show. I want all the different pieces to fall into place so that the ultimate, complete jigsaw puzzle that emerges is appreciated. We are working on the music, the lighting, the narration and it is only on stage during the final event that everything will come together beautifully. I m really looking forward to it. Yamini Reddy will be performing An evening of storytelling on May 9, at 7pm at The Habitat Centre rt and culture have always been an Aexcellent blend. Neelam Malhotra, a local artist and an emerging curator introduced the culture of masks through her exhibition, Mukhosh. It showcased 123 conventional masks, reflecting the inheritance of ancient culture and the legacy of the tribal art. When asked about the idea behind the exhibition, Malhotra shared, Masks are very rare. People don t know much about folk, traditional or tribal masks, their idea of masks is limited to props, decorations and sometimes protection. I wanted people to learn about their significance in our culture. Apparently, artists who make masks aren t much recognised as they usually belong to remote areas which are not easily accessible. Each mask carried it s own unique identity, reflecting the persona of the artists. A mask from Nepal had an elephant head, highlighting the human-animal relationship. The earliest mask to be discovered had prehistoric rock paintings, dating back to 3000 BC. Masks share an analogous history and have been recoursed for diverse yet universal functions. Even the tradition of Halloween dates back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. During that time people felt that the spirits were very active, so the people started wearing masks so that the spirits wouldn t recognise them. The masks were carved, painted and decorated yet, they maintained a sense of simplicity. They exhibited an elaborative cultural detailing and an inclination to the geographical region they belonged to. Talking about the intense detailing that the masks exhibited, she said, They have been passed on since ages. All vary greatly in appearance, raw material and utility in accordance to whoever adopted them, including their culture, belief system and ecology. Some are often paired with costumes, significantly in rituals or performances for consummate characterisation. Fundamentally, the costume completes the new identity exemplified by the mask, and usually tradition prescribes its appearance and construction to the same extent as the mask itself. Costumes, like the masks, come from a diverse plethora of material, all of which has a symbolic connection with the mask s veritable imagery. When asked about the modern trends in mask making she explained, Lately, mask makers are resorting to paper mache as a medium, because it is easier, cheaper and quicker to make. Unfortunately they don t have much life when compared to brass and wooden mask. Brass and wooden masks are reducing in number now because of the high cost. The awestruck faces of the visitor definitely showed their wonder and amusement. She said, As a human being it is important to know the history of one s own culture. It s amazing to look back at our own heritage, along with the tribal, and realise their simplicity and beauty. Using masks as a medium we are trying to make people aware of our inheritance. Wearing masks and performing rituals is something that started centuries ago. The western world has recognised Indian art and artists more than India has. France and Norway are celebrating more of our Indian textiles. So, I think museums and galleries and even documentaries too should bring it forward and talk more about such issues. But, all the same, seeing the response towards the exhibition makes me content. I am expecting more Indians to visit. Talking about her future plans, Malhotra said, I am working on the Santhal tribal art of Bengal as well as the show on puppetry and Phulkari textiles of north east. The exhibition is open till June 10 and is definitely a must-see for art enthusiast. F rom capturing the majestic conical roofed Photography is not just limited to a good camera or the composition. Rather, photography com- houses in Alberobello, Italy to the mystical remains of castles and fortresses built in the pels one to explore the world. Being an advertising photographer, Haksar says, Earlier, my hectic 7th century in Croatia, eastern Europe, Chennai based photographer, Sharad Haksar is known to schedule never gave me the leisure to follow my capture the unconventional and the unexplored heart. I love travelling and that is what I have been architecture. His latest series Stories of Three Cities doing for the past three years. I have been very fascinated with historical architecture and nature, so captures a new concept, illusions in impressions, documenting the imprints made by ordinary I go for a fifteen day trip to places where not many ature breathes life into us. The ultimate nur- that embraces us fondly and soothes up objects, like banana and corn which were slurred people have been. I interact with the people and Nturer with powdered coloures. Talking about his new series, Haksar shares, The astounding thing about this exhibition is that it involves an amalgamation of three varied themes. While the eye-soothing scenes from Italy and Croatia are a part of my 15 days trip, the third conceptual series that is on display is the inspiration I got from Neil Armstrong s first step on the moon. It was the illusionary images that created a lot of buzz in the past and I really wanted to do something on illusions. Also, the reason behind having a single platform for such parallel genres was to break the stereotype of single theme exhibitions. From the numerous photographs that have been exhibited, there are two series which are very close to his heart. I basically like conceptual photography so I really enjoyed working on my series, The Divine Irony in which I ve shot Hindu Gods. It includes Lakshmi along with a wall that has a beggar showing the humorous irony about life. The other series that is really special to me is Brand Irony, which portrays a man taking a leak on the wall with the following written: nike, just do it. learn about their culture, food and lifestyle. Little did he know that his hobby would one day bring him more than 200 awards. Haksar s photographic journey apparently started as a three-yearold and the idea of pursuing it as a career stuck him when he was in eleventh standard. I met Iqbal Mohammad who had returned to Chennai after studying photography in US. I loved his work and since he had come from the west, his work was different and creative than what I had seen in India at that point. He saw some of my amateur pictures and said that I have an eye for photography and even offered me the chance to work with him. This was the major turning point in my life, shared Haksar. When asked about his perspective towards life as a photographer, Haksar shared, Life is too short. We keep doing the same mundane stuff day in and day out. But before you realise what you want, you become too old to do it. So, I believe that you have one life which you need to live to the fullest and travel does that for me. It gives me a sense of fulfillment when I go to different places. our burning nerves, bountiful nature is the true giver. But what do we give it in return? Dhananjay Mukherjee, in an effort to remind his viewers of the need to save our environment, has painted his canvas beautifully. The different faces in my paintings are carved out of a leaf with various motifs forming the eyes and lips. I find modernism on canvas with the help of old mythological art, expressing the same through remarkable use of colours to depict the unknown mysteries in the natural world. I got the idea for this theme from the Rain-Forest. Somehow, they appear to be forming an image which looks very much like a God face or a human shape or form, Mukherjee shares. I create graphic and structural uniformity on canvas through the play of light and shade. My paintings are a judicious mix of the abstract and realistic forms, which stems from unique imagination, combining the real natural world with the artistic and creative world. According to me green is the colour of life, but human beings, through ages, have exploited it without understanding how pristine and important it is for life on earth, he adds. His meticulous tapestries reflect the sacrosanctity of nature. His solo art exhibition is on at the Azad Bhavan Art Gallery, where art admirers come and marvel at the graphic and structural uniformity created through the play of light and shade. I feel that nature gives us very everything we need in our life, yet we never return the favour. The purpose of my paintings is to inculcate faith in nature. I believe with my paintings I can bring people to see the divinity inside every green form, be it a plant, a tree trunk or even a leaf, Mukherjee says. The flora in his paintings has been brought alive through its resemblance to Gods and deities. Comparing nature to God he says, We all have deep respect for our mythology. We could never think of hurting our Gods. Likewise, nature should be seen in a similar light as God. This is why I have tried to give my paintings a divine touch. Our rainforests are in great danger. We are cutting them down rather injudiciously for our own selfish purposes.we must realise their importance before it s too late, asserts Dhananjay, thereby expressing his concerns over the extinction of rainforests.

15 G etting better and better, Andy Murray worked his way into the quarterfinals of the French Open for the fourth straight year by beating Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 on Monday. The top-ranked Murray became the 15th man to reach 650 tour-level match wins. "I think today was probably the best I have played overall. Each match I feel like I played better," said Murray, who lost in last year's final. "I have hit the ball cleaner and started to hit the right shots at the right moments. (I have) come a long way the last ten days or so." Murray had never before played the unseeded Russian. The 53rdranked Khachanov made 38 unforced errors, compared to only 14 for Murray. Murray will next play eighthseeded Kei Nishikori, who recovered to beat Fernando Verdasco 0-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-0. "Kei is dangerous off both wings," Murray said. "Moves well." Earlier, third-seeded Simona Halep and fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina advanced and will face each other in the quarterfinals. In four previous matches on clay, Halep had never been able to beat Carla Suarez Navarro. But the Romanian took care of that problem on Monday, routing Suarez Navarro 6-1, 6-1 on Court Philippe Chatrier. "I was expecting a very tough game," said Halep, the 2014 French Open runner-up. "I managed to push her back." Svitolina rallied to beat Croatian qualifier Petra Martic 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Court Suzanne Lenglen. The 290th-ranked Martic was leading 5-2 and 30-0 on Svitolina's serve in the deciding set. The Ukrainian managed to hold serve, however, which allowed Martic to serve for the match at 5-3. But Svitolina, who needed treatment on her back at the start of the third set, broke and soon won on her second match point, when Martic hit a backhand into the net. "It was amazing tennis from Petra today and she was really striking the ball well," Svitolina said. "I was really happy to come back in the second set. Thanks to the crowd for cheering me on. They gave me the energy to fight." Stan Wawrinka reached the French Open quarterfinals for the fourth time after beating Gael Monfils 7-5, 7-6 (7), 6-2. The 2015 champion sealed victory on his third match point with a backhand down the line that the Frenchman could not return. The third-seeded Swiss next plays No 7 Marin Cilic of Croatia. hahid Afridi was appalled by Pakistan's abject Ssurrender but he credited India for their commanding show, saying the defending champions lived upto the favourites tag in their Champions Trophy opener here. Afridi, a former Pakistan captain, said his country's drab show last night took away all the excitement from what was expected to be a high-voltage Group B encounter. "The Indo-Pak Champions Trophy encounter failed to live up to its hype as Pakistan produced a forgettable performance at Edgbaston. As a Pakistani supporter, the drab show was a painful watch indeed as India once again proved that it has a stranglehold over its neighbour that it is in no mood to relinquish," Afridi wrote in a column for the ICC. "India started as the favourite and played the entire game in the same frame of mind, even as Pakistan crumbled limply." India launched their ICC Champions Trophy campaign with a resounding 124-run victory over Pakistan last night, extending their dominance over the arch-rivals in major ICC tournaments. Analysing the match, Afridi said India came hard on skipper Sarfraz Ahmed's shoddy game plan. "Sarfraz Ahmed won what was a crucial toss in tricky weather conditions. When rain is around, the team batting second gets a huge advantage. Unfortunately though, a poor game plan and shoddy execution, besides abysmal fielding, nullified the advantage," he said. "Mohammad Amir bowled a splendid first over and I thought he would strike with the new ball. Strangely though, Sarfraz handed the other new ball to Imad Wasim despite the overcast conditions. The akistan coach Mickey Arthur feels his side Pwas given a "reality check" by India in the lost Champions Trophy clash here and the "below-par" show was a result of his players letting the occasion get the better of them. Arthur admitted that Pakistani players lacked self belief and erred in executing simple plans. "We were below par. It's as simple as that. And it's a reality check of where we are in our one-day cricket at the moment," Arthur said at the post-match press conference here. "We talk about setting the tone up front. But we didn't set tone up front. We had a couple of guys that were in the clouds at the start and that sets the tone. For us to have a performance as tentative as that right from the start is a worry and the only thing I can think of is the magnitude of the occasion got to them." India launched their Champions Trophy campaign with a resounding 124-run victory over Pakistan on Sunday, extending their dominance over the arch-rivals in major ICC tournaments. Pakistan now need to win their final two games against Sri Lanka and South Africa to stand a chance of qualifying for the semifinals. "The guys tried as hard as they could. My issue is fear. My issue is getting out there and really looking to take the game on and just believing in themselves and believing that they can take the game on," Arthur said. "The worrying thing for me, and it has been for a period of time, is we just do the basics wrong. We do the simple things wrong. We drop simple catches. We don't run well enough between wickets," he lamented. An exasperated Arthur could barely hide tactic was perplexing for me since the match wasn't being played in the UAE! Even if Sarfraz wanted to surprise India, he should have deployed his faster bowlers after an over or two from Imad." Afridi said Pakistan had allowed Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan to settle down and once that happened, it was difficult to stop the duo. "Players of the calibre of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan are very hard to stop if they are allowed to settle early, and that is what Pakistan allowed them to do," he said. "While the Indian openers negotiated Amir carefully, they gradually got their eye in against Imad. Pakistan missed a trick and for the rest of the Indian innings there was hardly a period where they looked troubled. "Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh than flayed a tiring attack before Hardik Pandya's cameo turned the match totally in the defending champion's favour," Afridi added. Afridi also came hard on Pakistan's shoddy fielding effort. "Pakistan's fielding was very ordinary too, with easy runs given away inside the circle, besides the dropped chances, which made life tougher for the bowlers. The players looked tense and nervous despite the claims to the contrary before the start of the game," he said. Afridi was also scathing on his attack on the Pakistani batsmen, who could muster just 164 runs. "I feel that our batsmen are short on the skills side and freeze under pressure. The senior lot failed to cope with the increasing run-rate and got out after occupying the crease for long but barren durations. "There is simply no excuse for a 164-run score on a flat wicket where the opposition managed 319 with consummate ease," he said. his disappointment with his players, who floundered in almost every aspect of the game. "We don't hit the keeper with our throws. We don't understand when to bowl our variations. We bowled a really good over and then we bowled a variation in our sixth ball and that's the ball that ended up going for a boundary," he said. "So it's the simplicity of those things that are worrying me at the moment and our understanding of when to do certain things. So that was disappointing. But we'll bounce back from it," he added. "We selected a team that we thought could go out there and rattle the cages of India. Ultimately our execution wasn't good enough today. We thought we had an attack that could really attack them and put them under pressure. And we didn't execute that at all." The shoddy performance, notwithstanding, Arthur defended Pakistan's record in recent times. "It's a total insult to say we're playing even worse. If you have a look at our records over the last year we've won two series. We've got ourselves from No 9 to No 8 in the rankings and our brand of cricket has changed," the South African insisted. "We had a poor game today. But we're obviously trying our best and we're trying to change it. It's not going to happen overnight. We're trying every day. Every time we go down to training, we try and get the basics right. We didn't do it today. And that's disappointing." Asked whether Sunday's defeat will only take Pakistan cricket backward, the coach said: "In fact, something like this could take it forwards, for the simple reason that a lot oosted by the availability of star Bstriker Sunil Chhetri after his timely recovery from a hamstring injury, hosts India go into the football friendly against lower-ranked Nepal here on Tuesday with their confidence high and as the favourites. The international friendly is to be played at the Football Arena in Andheri Sports Complex where India's dramatic ascension to no 100 in the FIFA rankings commenced last September with a 4-0 rout of Puerto Rico. The Indian squad has been sweating it out at the same venue for three weeks now with only the players from Bengaluru FC and Mohun Bagan missing for the major part due to their club commitments. With them joining the camp a few days ahead of the friendly against Nepal, which is being used as the tune-up for India's vital AFC Asian Cup Group A qualifier against Kyrgyzstan next week, national head coach Stephen Constantine would be keen to put his best team on the park and make them jell again as a combination. The players had dispersed to fulfil their respective club commitments after notching up a memorable 1-0 win over Myanmar in the AFC Asian Cup group opener in March end and the main aim will be to reunite in a proper way for the June 13 game against Kyrgyzstan at Bengaluru. Although key striker Chhetri is fit enough to play, he was unlikely to be included in the friendly as a precaution for the more important game against Kyrgyzstan, said Constantine on Monday. "(Norway-based goalkeeper) Gurpreet Singh will lead the side. Sunil may not play against Nepal. The AFC Asian Cup qualifier is more important than a friendly. It's just to protect him. He's not 22 anymore. As you get older you will have to put up with injuries and it gets longer to recover," the Englishman explained. India were hovering in the 170s when they last played against Nepal and Constantine described the ascent as "not an easy journey." "It was a result of a lot of hard work and commitment from everyone concerned - players, support staff and the rest. FIFA ranking is just one aspect, a number. It depends on a number of variations," he said. The team will obviously miss the services of winger Udanta Singh, who has picked up a serious hamstring injury and is out of this game as well as the more important one against the Kyrgyz Republic. It was Udanta who had laid the perfect pass for Chhetri to bulge the net in the dying moments of the game against Myanmar in Yangoon on March 28. India will also miss the services of C K Vineet, said Constantine. Coming to the India-Nepal football rivalry, the hosts have not lost to their north-eastern neighbours for 18 years, their last defeat - a 0-4 rout - happening in the 1999 SAF Games. After that reversal, the two South Asian neighbours have met on nine occasions and India has come out trumps on all but two of these encounters which were goalless draws. Their last contest was in the South Asian Football Federation championship in December 2015 and India had emerged 4-1 victors. Visiting team's coach, Koji Gyotoku of Japan said the game against India was very important ahead of next week's group F AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Yemen. "This match is very important to prepare for our Asian Cup qualifier against Yemen next week. India have improved as a team in the last 2-3 years. We are looking forward to get a good result for building confidence," said Koji. "In tactics and in the physical aspect the Indian team is better. We need to get something from tomorrow's game," he added. Nepal does not possess a national football stadium to train or host internationals after the devastating earthquake in capital Kathmandu a couple of years ago, according to the country's Japanese coach. of questions get answered. "When we put a performance in like that we answer a lot of questions, and a lot of things become clearer for us in terms of how we take this team forward." Not just the big defeat, there were also concerns in the Pakistani camp over the fitness of several players like Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz. While Amir left the field after one ball in what would have been his ninth over, due to cramps, Riaz limped off after twisting his ankle. "I don't know why they're cramping. That's something that I need to take up with the medical team. The magnitude of the occasion? Possibly. Possibly. And I think very definitely," Arthur said. "Wahab Riaz was fully fit. He went through a fitness test; he was declared fully fit. He performed poorly today. But he had a role to play. And I'll take the blame, me, I'll take it. I selected him. I selected him because I wanted him to perform a role. He didn't execute that role, unfortunately. "So sometimes it works out. Sometimes it doesn't. We picked Shadab ahead of Fahim today. That worked really well. I thought Shadab was outstanding. So, sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't," he said. Pakistan will play South Africa in a crucial Group B encounter here on Wednesday. Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed felt his side lost the plot in the final overs of the Indian innings. "Everything was under control after 40 overs, but we lost the plot in the last eight. Credit to India's batsmen. They scored 124 in those last eight, and the momentum went to India. I think we need to stick together and control our bowling rate, especially last few overs," a disappointed Sarfraz said.

16 A sensational death bowling spell by Mitchell Starc (4/29) trumped Tamim Iqbal's superb 95 as Australia bowled Bangladesh out for a paltry 182 in 44.3 overs in their ICC Champions Trophy match here on Monday. Starc destroyed Bangladesh late in the innings with a sensational death bowling display. He grabbed three wickets from the 43rd over, including that of Iqbal. He then scalped the last Bangladesh batsman to end the innings early. The Australian fast bowler missed a chance for a hat-trick as he took three wickets in four balls. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa grabbed two wickets in an impressive spell while Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Travis Head and Moises Henriques took a wicket apiece as the Australians throttled Bangladesh batsmen - except for Iqbal - for runs. Electing to bat on an Oval pitch that offered pace but little swing, Iqbal played a lone hand in the face of some fine bowling by the Australians as he steered his side to a respectable total. His 69-run stand for the fourth wicket with Shakib Al Hasan (29) was the only substantial partnership for the Bangladesh side with only three batsmen reaching to double digit figures. Iqbal hit six fours and three sixes in his fine 144- ball innings as he gave scant respect of the Australian bowlers who otherwise gave a good account of themselves. Bangladesh began at a slow pace with the Australians tying them down by bowling a tight line and length. On top of that, Bangladesh lost wickets at regular intervals with Iqbal being the one making a resistance to the Australian bowlers. Soumya Sarkar (3) was the first to go in the sixth over at team score of 22 with Josh Hazlewood edging him to Matthew Wade as the opening batsman played without any foot movement. One down Imrul Kayes (6) was beaten by Pat Cummins' pace as the batsman offered a simple catch to Aaron Finch at cover point as Bangladesh were reduced to 37 for 2 in the 11th over. Wicketkeeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim (9) did not last long as he fell LBW to a Moises Henriques delivery in the 17th over and Bangladesh were in trouble at 53 for 3. Iqbal was, however, unruffled even though wickets fell regularly at the other end. He picked Henriques for a special treatment in the 23rd over, hitting the bowler for two fours and a six to collect 16 runs from it. In the next over, Iqbal reached to his 37th fifty in his 171st ODI with a single off Travis Head. Shakib gave got good support to Iqbal for a while as the duo added 69 runs for the fourth wicket before he fell LBW to a delivery off in the 30th over. Adam Zampa then rocked the Bangladesh innings with two quick scalps. Zampa first had Sabbir Rahman (8) caught by Smith in the 35th over before scalping the wicket of Mahmudullah in the 37th over. Bangladesh reached 171/6 at the end of 40th over and it was left to Iqbal to accelerate the innings in the last 10 overs. But he fell in 43rd over bowled by Starc who grabbed three wickets in a dramatic death bowling show. we've taken the confidence from the practice games. on. Kohli and Yuvraj stood out in an allround batting effort, propelling India to 319 for three after rain halted proceedings twice. Yuvraj smashed 53 off 32 balls, while Kohli made 81 off 68 deliveries. "The way he (Yuvraj) was hitting the ball, I felt like a club batter in front of him," Kohli said at the post-match press conference. "...After I got to 50, I wasn't able to freely play. And Yuvi came in and just took all the pressure off me. And the way he batted was the way only he can strike the ball, hitting low full tosses for fours and sixes, and even digging out yorkers for fours was outstanding. "I think that really deflated the opposition and that gave me a bit of time to settle in from the other end. When he got out, I took over. But I think his innings was a difference in the game," he added. While he was pleased with the win, Kohli was not impressed with India's fielding. "With the bat and ball, right up there - I would say nine out of 10. In the field we were still 6. It's a very strong performance, a game reduced to 48-overs-a-side affair. "I think the way Shikhar batted was really good to see. Rohit was taking a bit of time because, understandably so, he's come back after so long to international cricket. IPL is different, but international runs are very different, against a quality bowling attack as well," Kohli said. "And Hardik, 18 off five balls, was outstanding. We went with four seamers purely because we're playing Pakistan. They play spin really well, and most of them are righthanders. "In pressure situations, to have mid-on, mid-off up and hit hard lengths, gives us an advantage. Against other sides, we might use two spinners, depending on their strengths," he added. Asked what it meant to play against Pakistan given the continuing tensions between the two countries, Kohli chose to offer a diplomatic reply. "This one's done and dusted...we come added. "It's not preferences over opposition. And that's all I can say to this." Nonetheless, Kohli said, he does enjoy the competitiveness of Indo-Pak cricket rivalry. "They're a very competitive side. The atmosphere is great. From that regard, as a cricketer, we really enjoyed this game, that's all I can say," he said. Reflecting on his own performance, Kohli said he let the momentum slip after reaching 40 and regretted trying too hard for big hits during his partnership with Yuvraj. "But when he got out, I decided to stay still and just back the strokes that I have and a few connected, and that's what happens in this sport. Momentum comes your way; it goes away. But you've got to stay patient. And when it comes back, you've got to capitalise on it. So I believed in myself; I can get 30 off 10 balls as well in the end," he explained. dispute and once again raised the spectre of an Ashes series boycott by players later this year. The feisty opener has not backed away from claims he made last month of a potential players' strike during the showpiece home series against England, starting in November. CA has threatened not to pay contracted players beyond the June 30 expiry of their current financial deal if they do not accept a new offer. But Warner has gone on the front foot, claiming the governing body had prosecuted its argument primarily through media briefings. "If we are unemployed, we have no contracts, we can't play," he said on Monday in England at the Champions Trophy. "We are pretty sure that they will come to an agreement. But, as you know, we are going to be unemployed come July 1. So we have to wait and see." Warner said beyond "a couple of s" CA management had not engaged with its contracted players. "It is only what we hear in the media and that's how CA have been driving it the whole way," he said. "They have been using the media as a voice and we get the message from there." Warner again pledged his "full support" to fellow players and affirmed he is "100 per cent" behind the Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA). "They are doing a great job for us," he said of the players' union's efforts in the dispute."from a players' point of view, we are pretty vocal and upbeat." A fter a comfortable outing in the tournament-opener, title favourites England are set to face a much stiffer test against New Zealand in a crucial Champions Trophy Group A fixture here on Tuesday. There is a lot at stake for both the teams. England will put their one foot in the semifinals with a second successive win while New Zealand will aim for two full points after rain denied them a crack at Australia and the two teams settled for a point each in a game that produced no-result. England could not have hoped for a better start to the tournament as they thrashed a lacklustre Bangladesh in the first match of the Champions Trophy on Thursday. How easily they chased down 306 was a timely warning to the other title contenders. Joe Root strolled to a 10th ODI hundred while opener Alex Hales missed out on welldeserved hundred by five runs. Captain Eoin Morgan too began his campaign on a confident note, smashing an unbeaten 75 off 61 balls. He, however, would MATCH preview be a tad worried about the lean patch of opener Jason Roy, who has not crossed 20 in his last six ODI innings. The hosts will also have to deal with the absence of fast bowling allrounder Chris Woakes, who was ruled out of the tournament with an injury after bowling just two overs against Bangladesh. Steven Finn has been named his replacement. Morgan might also bring back leggie Adil Rashid to add more variety to the bowling department. Nonetheless, an exciting contest is in the offing with New Zealand showing a lot of promise against Australia. Captain Kane Williamson led from the front against the trans- Tasmanian rivals with a ninth ODI hundred. Luke Ronchi looked in ominous touch at the top of the order and alongside Martin Guptill, form a dangerous combination. The Black Caps lost their way towards the end of the innings and they would be aiming to rectify that in the game on Tuesday. Chasing 235 in 33 overs, England fast bowler Steven Finn hopes to make the most of his late call-up to Champions Trophy duty when the tournament hosts face New Zealand in Cardiff. "It's always frustrating when you are left out of squads, but you have to roll with the punches. I just focused on keeping my head up and fighting my way back into the team," Finn told reporters on Sunday. Australia were put under severe pressure by New Zealand, reducing them to 53 for three in nine overs before rain had the final say. Their pace battery, comprising Tim Southee, Adam Milne and Trent Boult, looked in good shape and would be raring to perform. Former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond wrote in a column for the ICC: "In some respects, this is almost like a quarterfinal, the Birmingham no-result throwing a spanner in the works a little bit. Especially in the last two years, despite England's vastly different approach to white-ball cricket, games between the two teams have been very tight, and I expect another close, well-contested encounter."
